Nighttown's 12 Days of "Home for the Holidays"

North Coast Contemporary Jazz Saxophonist & Group hit theStage at Nighttown! Featuring music from his brand new CD"Road Trip".Over the past two decades, urban jazz icons Kirk Whalum and Jonathan Butler havepaved the way for emerging artists to take a bolder approach to blending theirpassions for instrumental pop, jazz and soul and gospel music. While those twoartists were well established before they began recording gospel and worshipalbums – and rarely blend the two styles on a single project – saxophonist AndreCavor is unabashedly sharing his lifelong love for both styles of music from the getgo. True to its title, the Cleveland based performer’s independent debut album RoadTrip chronicles his multi-faceted journey – starting with playing the sax in churchand, over the past decade, founding and leading The Cavor Project, an 11 pieceensemble renowned as one of the most diverse bands in the city. Andre found theperfect producer to take his artistry to the next level in Darren Rahn, a saxophonistand artist who has worked his studio magic for Whalum and Butler in addition togenre greats Dave Koz, Wayman Tisdale, Najee, Eric Darius, Jeffrey Osborne andJeff Lorber. “Mixing contemporary jazz and gospel songs on Road Trip felt like a naturalextension of my many live performances over the years,” says Andre, who firstbegan playing the sax at 16 but let it go during his eight year stint in the armybefore rediscovering it in the early 2000s. “So many people I have played for and entertained liked and respondedemotionally to both sides of my artistry,” he adds. “When I started thinking aboutdoing my first solo album, I thought I should share everything I truly love to do. Ofcourse, I heard from some fellow sax players and other naysayers, telling me thatnew artists should never mix gospel and smooth jazz/R&B, that audiences won’t getit for some reason. My response was, ‘I honestly don’t think you were conceived to agospel tune!’ and then told them I believed that people that love church and Godalso love R&B. I felt it was important to share my entire self with people. Includingboth on Road Trip was the perfect way to share my entire self with everyone.” Andre laid the foundation for Road Trip with hundreds of performances as leader of

Andre laid the foundation for Road Trip with hundreds of performances as leader ofThe Cavor Project, which has been a mainstay on the Cleveland music scene since2007. The band is known for infusing fresh, explosive energy into vocal andinstrumental classics from the 80’s through 2017 and spicing up their set list withdynamic originals. The Cavor Project performs a grooving mix of R&B, smooth jazz,hip-hop, reggae, pop, blues, rock and gospel. When I see the smiles on people’s faces when they hear my music, it’s anoverwhelming feeling and confirmation that I’m doing exactly what I am put here todo. My goal is always to make people happy, and now with the release of Road Trip,I’m excited about reaching beyond my comfort zone and sharing the joy with morepeople.”

Farinacci had already achieved enough stature by his mid-teens that WyntonMarsalis offered to help him set his sights on coming to New York, and by 2001,Farinacci was one of only four trumpeters in the world to be selected as theinaugural students in The Juilliard School's first jazz curriculum. Nighttown’s Special New Year's Eve Tripleheader!!

Vocalist from The Manhattan Transfer brings in the New Yearlive on Nighttown's Main Stage with her All Star NYC Group!

Featuring: Janis Siegel-Vocals, John DiMartino-piano, BorisKozlov-acoustic bass, & Keith Hall-drums.Over the past three and a half decades, the voice of Janis Siegel -- a nine-timeGrammy winner and a seventeen-time Grammy nominee -- has been anundeniable force in The Manhattan Transfer's diverse musical catalog. Alongsideher career as a member of this 36-year musical institution, Siegel has alsosustained a solo career that has spawned more than a half dozen finely-crafted soloalbums and numerous collaborative projects, amassed a large international fanbase and garnered consistently high critical praise.

Siegel learned about the music business at an early age. By the time she was 12,she was singing with an all-girl pop trio called The Young Generation. "WhenMotown became popular, I fell head over heels for it, as well as for people likeAretha Franklin. And of course, I went insane over the Beatles. But I also lovedBarbra Streisand. And living in Brooklyn, I saw a lot of Broadway shows too." On thejazz side, she remembers John Coltrane as her musical idol during her high schooland college years. But it was a chance encounter that steered her into TheManhattan Transfer.

Janis Siegel met Tim Hauser at a party, and he asked her to sing on some demoshe'd been working on. Soon Hauser invited Siegel to join a four-part vocal groupthat he'd been trying to reconstruct. When she joined Hauser, Laurel Massé andAlan Paul, the Manhattan Transfer was born. The group's self-titled debut album in1975 ushered in a renaissance in vocal-based music and marked the openingchapter of the foursome's quarter-century-plus success story.

Over the years, Janis' unmistakable voice has become one of the group's mostrecognizable trademarks. She sang lead on some of the Transfer's biggest hits, such as "Operator," "Chanson D'Amour," "Twilight Zone," "Birdland," "Ray'sRockhouse," "Sassy," "Spice of Life," "Mystery," and "The Boy from N.Y.C." She alsogained a reputation as a vocal arranger by writing five of the charts for the group'sacclaimed masterwork, Vocalese, seven charts for the group's Grammy-winningalbum Brasil, and won a Grammy herself in 1980 for her arrangement of "Birdland."In 1993, she and her Manhattan Transfer colleagues received their honorarydoctorates from the Berklee School of Music, and in 1999 they were among the firstclass of inductees into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.

But Siegel has been riding a dual career track for nearly two decades. Shelaunched her solo career in 1982 on Atlantic Records with the release ofExperiment in White produced by Joel Dorn. Her followup solo effort, At Home, earned her a Grammy nomination in 1987 for Best Female Jazz Vocal.

New Year's Day Brunch!!

Join us for a fabulous New Year's Day Brunch with world renown trumpet starDominick Farinacci. Kick off the New Year!

Dominick Farinacci recently released his Mack Avenue Records debut, "ShortStories" -- a compelling suite of music with a repertoire that spans genres andgenerations united by the trumpeter/composer's soulful conception. Bringingtogether songs from Tom Waits, Horace Silver, Dianne Reeves and the Gipsy Kingsas well as original compositions, Farinacci has managed to create his own musicaluniverse, aided by musicians of the highest caliber. All of the songs have anarrative that any listener can relate to.

narrative that any listener can relate to.

During his schoolyears and afterwards, Farinacci immediately distinguished himself as asoloist/bandleader/composer with a vision.

Soon thereafter, Farinacci was named the first Global Ambassador for Jazz atLincoln Center and traveled to Qatar where his world expanded beyond his wildestdreams. Throughout the two years that Farinacci spent there, he broadened hisactivities to include dozens of different projects, where the goal was, through hismusic and outreach activities, to unite communities and overcome barriers ofevery sort.

Life itself has many different sorts of mentorship built into it. A life in the arts can'texist without these kinds of relationships, and Short Stories is the fruit of the comingtogether of two kindred spirits, Farinacci and LiPuma, from the same home town(Cleveland, Ohio), separated by just under half a century in age. What unites themis a clear, moern aesthetic vision that combines the highest musical standards witha desire to be agents of change.

There are so many superlatives thrown around these days that they seem to havelost their effect; but as this unique and deeply grounded album sinks into yourconsciousness, you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that DominickFarinacci is not only one of the truly outstanding musicians of his generation, butalso that what is behind the music is nothing short of miraculous. In Farinacci's ownwords: "While Short Stories is the title of this particular recording, it has come torepresent a culmination of things I'm most passionate about - performance, education, music & wellness and community-based cultural collaborations -unfolding in the music and touring around the world."

But in January, Merrily comes to the Nighttown stage when Friedman talks aboutwhy this music that so many thought was destined for success flopped on Broadwayafter only 11 performances – and why over the last 30 years it’s become one ofSondheim’s most beloved musicals. The Nighttown show includes music directorJordan Cooper and Lakeland cast members performing several songs from Merrily.

If you’re a real Sondheim fan, you won’t want to miss "Deconstructing Merrily WeRoll Along."

Based on the play by George Kauffman and Moss Hart, this musical (with book byGeorge Furth) tells of the disintegration of the friendship of successful songwriterFranklin Shepard, his lyricist Charlie Kringas, and novelist Mary Flynn. The actionmoves backward through time, from 1980 to 1957.

The score is constructed in blocks, so we hear characters' themes at the beginningof the show, seeing throughout the rest of the show how that character developedthat theme. For example, in the first scene Frank sings, "It's my time comingthrough / all my dreams coming true / Gorgeous house, gorgeous wife," indicativeof his materialism and superficiality. By the end of that show, we hear the samemelodies, and characters for that matter, evolve into more positive and optimistichuman beings, as embodied in such songs as "Our Time," "Good Thing Going," and"Not A Day Goes By" as they grow younger and inexplicably mature.

Despite the fact many consider Merrily to include Sondheim’s most toe-tapping,Broadway-like scores, the show was an abject failure when it opened on Broadwayin 1981. That said, years’ later Merrily We Roll Along became a cult favorite andnow enjoys regular productions across the country.

Charles Walker Band$15.00 Friday 1/19 8:30 pm Buy Tickets

From Milwaukee, Wisconsin!

Described as "Dynamically Funky and Recklessly Hopeful" this BarnstormingWisconsin Trio hits the Stage at Nighttown!

Featuring: Charles Walker-keyboards, sax, & vocals, Porsche Carmon-vocals &bass, Paris Howard-drums.

Grounded in soul, the Charles Walker Band has been compared to Prince, BrunoMars, The Brand New Heavys, and James Brown. The Milwaukee based band hasrefined their sound into Neo-Funk, a fusion of funk infused rhythms with popmelodies. The three-piece band rehearses tirelessly in Charles’ basement, amidstcouches and low ceilings, Charles having to stoop the entire time. Surprisingly, atthe band’s shows, there are no fans. There is only family. The question posed at thebeginning of the first song is, Are we family or not? The band evokes positiveenergy to their family members, who say they always feel better than when theyarrived. The Charles Walker Band is Dynamically Funky. Recklessly Hopeful.

Charles grew up literally in the middle of nowhere. Surrounded by dairy farms andapple orchards, the closest town ten miles away, he found music in the sixth grade. After being presented with various instruments, he desperately wanted to playtrombone. However, his music teacher declared he had the perfect mouth forsaxophone, and his career was started. Walker, now also playing keys and singing, started the Charles Walker Band 15 years ago, initially as a blues band. WhenPorsche Carmon joined, a Columbus, OH native and female vocalist, bassist, andhand percussionist in the band, the sound began to shift towards funk. Eventually,Charles and Porsche became a couple, and together laugh, cry, and argue abouthow best to plan shows that compete with cell phones and tablets.

The core of the Charles Walker Band is a three piece band. Besides Charles andPorsche, Paris Howard nails down the drums.

The group has opened for national acts including Earth Wind & Fire, theCommodores, BB King, Cameo, Aaron Neville, and Richard Marx.

Stanley Jordan$25.00 Saturday 1/20 8:00 pm Buy Tickets10:00 pm Buy Tickets

Virtuoso Guitarist and Mack Avenue Recording Artist back at Nighttown for 2Big Shows!

In a career that took flight with immediate commercial success and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musicalpersona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it boldreinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits,to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works—soloor with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathlessjourneys into the unexpected.

Key to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on theguitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan'sinnovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While ahandful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley’s fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence.

But his technique, though impressive, is always a means to a musical end. Hismusic is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination oflisteners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordanwanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar, so he applied pianoprinciples to do so. Jordan's touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody andchords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence. It also allowsJordan to play simultaneously on two different guitars, or even on guitar and piano. He says that “I think of it as a single instrument, but one with a wide range of tonalcolors—that’s why I do it.”

To date Jordan has performed in over 60 countries on 6 continents. He hasperformed at many festivals, including the Kool Jazz Festival, the Concord JazzFestival, and the Montreaux International Jazz Festival. During the 1980s hecollaborated with a diverse array of artists, including performances with Art Blakeyand Richie Cole and recordings with Stanley Clarke and Kenny Rogers. T

Jordan has received four Grammy nominations. His most recent album "Friends"was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.

Jordan came to prominence with the release of his 1985 album Magic Touch, arevolutionary project that placed him at the forefront of re-launching legendaryBlue Note Records into a contemporary entity in jazz and beyond, as alsoestablished the then-twenty-something Jordan as among the most distinctive andrefreshing new voices of the electric guitar.

In 2007 Jordan signed with Mack Avenue Records and released State of Nature in2008 and Friends in 2011. For Friends, he invited musical guests including guitaristsBucky Pizzarelli, Mike Stern, Russell Malone and Charlie Hunter; violinist ReginaCarter; saxophonists Kenny Garrett and Ronnie Laws; trumpeter Nicholas Payton;bassists Christian McBride and Charnett Moffett; and drummer Kenwood Dennard.
