Things are still tough for seniors, and not necessarily going to
get better soon, but there are resources available that many
seniors are missing out on through lack of knowledge that they
are available. According to a report released by advocacy
groups for seniors, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and
the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a), the
total amount of senior benefits being lost totals more than $20
billion. These two groups have launched a campaign called
“You Gave, Now Save” to help connect potential recipients
with the funding.

The two groups jointly run a hotline called Eldercare Locator,
which connects seniors to available services. According to the
survey, some 1.7 million people are not receiving Medicare Part
D Extra Help who are eligible for it. In addition, some people
who are receiving benefits of one kind often fail to realize that
they’re also eligible for another under current elder law.

Nearly one senior in ten lives below the poverty line, and these
poorer seniors are especially prone to miss out on available
benefits. Also, those seniors who are afflicted with chronic
medical conditions may be less able to pursue all their available
benefits. Yet these two groups are the ones most likely to be
eligible. Benefits being missed include food and nutrition
assistance, Supplemental Security Income, assistance with
home heating and cooling, and state and local government
programs providing help with transportation, legal services, and
medical care.

In addition to the elderly themselves, these are issues impacting
families. Elder care takes a bite out of resources and so is an
important consideration for NY estate planning and New York
asset protection, and government programs designed to provide
assistance to the elderly are something all sensible estate
planners will be aware of and take maximum advantage of.
