Attribute data and Pareto charts

In manufacturing, products are designed and produced to customer specifications.

Products that meet specifications are defined as conforming products.

Products that do not meet specifications are labeled as NON-conforming or defective.

The collection of data on NON-conforming products or attribute data is critical to implementing Statistical Process Control (SPC) programs.

Attribute data and Pareto charts

Once attribute data is collected, the SPC team organizes the data in Pareto charts to gain a better understanding of how to prioritize the corrective actions.

Principles of the Pareto chart were created by Italian engineer and economist Vilfredo Pareto in the mid 1800s.
