Royal Philips Electronics announced that Zia Eftekhar has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Philips Professional Luminaires North America, effective January 1, 2010. Eftekhar will succeed Kaj den Daas, a 33 year veteran of Philips Lighting, who will continue as Chairman of Philips Lighting North America and concentrate particularly on supporting the company’s legislative activities and par-ticipation in industry associations such as the National Electrical Manufacturers As-sociation and the National Association of Electrical Distributors.

Eftekhar is a highly respected 40 year veteran of the lighting industry and cur-rently CEO of the Philips Lightolier Group, the single largest business within

Philips Professional Luminaires. Since 1992 he has been the President of Lighto-lier and a Director of The Genlyte Group, the publicly traded parent of Lightolier ac-quired by Philips in 2008. Eftekhar played a crucial role in the integration of the Gen-lyte businesses into Philips, and in his new role he will lead the drive to further grow Philips’ leadership position in profession-al lighting systems and solutions in North America.

Under Eftekhar’s leadership, Philips Lightolier has evolved to reflect the needs of its customers. By introducing new busi-ness services such as the Energy Services Group, and meaningful technological in-novations that reflect the demand for en-ergy efficient lighting, Eftekhar has con-tinued to keep Lightolier at the forefront of professional lighting solutions. It is a challenge he now welcomes on a larger scale.

“I am honored to lead the Professional Luminaires business in North America, as we redefine what is possible in our indus-try. With our talented team and our stead-fast commitment to enhance people’s lives through light, we will continue to innovate around our customers’ needs and grow our leadership position.” said Eftekhar.

A New Year, a New Attitude

you provide the means to attain them. If you are one of the thousands of

people who aren’t managers, then you also need to make a commitment this year to increase your enthusiasm level or maintain that level if you didn’t allow things to affect you in the workplace. Positive attitudes can also be catching by your coworkers with simple words and actions. You don’t need to bring in a guitar and play songs for the team, but encouraging and optimistic com-ments, both business and personal, can go a long way to increase morale.

Nowadays, no one is immune from layoffs. Most companies are bare-bones now and are making their busi-

nesses work with the crews that they have. Distributors are running skeleton crews, manufacturers and reps both have cut headcounts and are expecting their salespeople to maintain sales in territories normally meant for two or three salespeople. Those in our indus-try fortunate enough to have good jobs, with decent pay and benefits, are truly thankful for what they have. But they all want security. That security par-tially comes from the attitude of the company and its representatives.

They say (I don’t know who ‘they’ are, but) 2011 is the year for major changes in the electrical wholesale industry. Projects will be approved, proposals will have been bid, jobs will be awarded, submittals will

have been approved, products will be ordered, big dollar items will be delivered, parts will be installed and invoices will get paid. Then we move on to the next one and the next; just like before. A lot has to happen before we get there, but once we change our mindset, and looks to-wards those opportunities for excel-lence, in 12 months when we look back, let’s hope that we made the right choices.

(The writer, Wayne John, is CEO of Electrical Career Specialists, Inc. ECS is a focused staffing and recruiting firm specializing only in the electrical wholesale distribution industry. www.ecs.jobs, [email protected], 888-474-4327).

and Eaton-Cutler Hammer. “Starting ECS would not have been possible without the support from industry, col-leagues and family. Once we turned the phones on, curiosity was mostly what we worked with in the beginning. Af-ter a few months, people started seeing how ECS could benefit the industry in finding those hard-to-get people; espe-cially since we were, and still are, the only staffing firm in the country with actual career experience in the electri-cal wholesale industry,” said Mr. John. “The more we are involved and under-stand our clients’ objectives, the more

effective our efforts will be.” From the beginning, their marketing

philosophy has always been to learn as much about their clients’ businesses as possible. Once a clear picture is pre-sented, ECS is able to match the right people to the right company. “We ap-preciate the opportunities our clients have awarded us over the years,” states John, who understands that a business such as ECS mandates confidentiality, trust and discretion.

Now one of the industry’s most rec-ognized names for staffing, ECS con-tinues to grow into other areas. Most recently at Electric West and Solar Power International, ECS unveiled

their newest division, Energy Career Specialists. This division works in all energy areas including solar, wind, tidal, and biotech. This new and rap-idly expanding trade will allow ECS to continue to diversify their offerings to new and existing clients.

“We are proud of how our business has changed people’s lives and also how our influence has benefited com-panies,” said Wayne John.

Kris Klinzing has never been known for ‘going with the flow’. Along with his Dad, ‘Speed’, they are very proud to announce the opening of their new store, Ac-cess Electric Supply, Inc. located in Moreno Valley. They are a full-line wholesale distributor targeting elec-trical customers in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.

“Believe me, in the last few weeks, I think I’ve heard just about every reason why I shouldn’t be starting a new business right now.” Kris said. “I know things are tough out there, and credit is really, really tight. But I totally disagree with the skeptics. I look at this as an ex-cellent opportunity! As I drive around the Inland Empire, I still see plenty of proj-ects going on.” He went on to say “Our competitors are cutting back on employ-ees and inventory, more and more every day it seems. As that happens, customer service inevitably suffers. That’s the word we’re hearing over and over again out on the street.” He says, “This is where Access Electric Supply will shine. We’re very strong financially, and we have the knowledge and experience to keep our customers happy. When we take care of our customers (and suppliers, too), they will in turn, take care of us. Our economy will eventually get better, and as it im-proves over time, we will already be well established in the area. I think our timing is perfect!”

Access Electric Supply-Timing is Everything

Speed added “Our new location is ideal. Being centralized makes us easy to ‘access’ from anywhere in the Inland Empire. Kris and I have have worked vir-tually non-stop during the past six weeks to make our building functional, as well as comfortable for all of our returning customers. We are looking forward to seeing and working with all of our pre-vious customers and suppliers…...and hopefully some new ones too!”

Access Electric Supply, Inc is located at: 7139 Old 215 Frontage Road, Moreno Valley, CA 92553. Kris and Speed wel-come all of their customers and vendors to stop by and visit them at their new location. Orion Energy Systems Inc. on December 8 was awarded a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark office for the cooling properties in-corporated in the power technology enterprise’s Compact Modular™ high intensity fluorescent (HIF) lighting platform.

The conductive, radiant and con-vective heat transfer properties of Orion’s Compact Modular lighting system result in a cooler operating fix-ture, which enhances ballast longev-ity, increases the overall efficiency of the device and eliminates cooling time that is typically required prior to performing routine maintenance.

Compared to the industry standard high-intensity discharge fixtures, or HIDs, that operate at approximately 1,000 degrees, Orion’s Compact Modular system operates at a cool 100 degrees. Because of Orion’s ex-pertise in managing thermal energy, the Compact Modular platform has been deployed effectively in the most extreme applications including envi-ronments with temperatures up to 131 degrees and in freezer applications as

low as 40 degrees below zero. By keeping the Compact Modular

cool, companies also are able to de-crease their air-conditioning costs, which are often increased as they try to offset the heat emitted by HIDs.

“The Compact Modular system is engineered to effectively manage heat by minimizing energy input and maximizing light output,” said Orion’s Chief Executive Officer Neal Verfuerth. “Because of its superior thermal and optical efficiencies, Ori-on technology consistently outper-forms other HIF technology on the market when included in test sites at commercial and industrial facilities. In addition, we’re seeing an increase in business from companies seeking to replace our competitors’ HIF tech-nology with the Compact Modular platform — sometimes within two years of our competitors’ initial in-stallation.”

Orion technology reduces a facil-ity’s base load lighting costs, on aver-age, by 38 cents per square foot, and reduces its energy use for lighting by 4.9 kilowatt-hours per square foot,

per year. The result is a 6.5-pounds-per-square-foot reduction of carbon dioxide annually.

When the Compact Modular plat-form is integrated with Orion’s In-teLite® wireless control system and direct renewable solar Apollo® light pipe, Orion customers are reducing energy consumption for lighting by up to 80 percent.

The design of the Compact Modu-lar fixture, its reflector and its modu-larity are already patented. Orion has 24 patents pending.

Orion has deployed its energy man-agement systems in 5,082 facilities across North America, including 120 of the Fortune 500 companies. Since 2001, Orion technology has displaced more than 477 megawatts, saving customers more than $710 million and reducing indirect carbon dioxide emissions by 6.1 million tons.

Orion Energy Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OESX) is a leading power technology enterprise that designs, manufactures and implements energy management systems, consisting primarily of high-performance, energy-efficient light-ing platforms, intelligent wireless control systems and direct renewable solar technology for commercial and industrial customers without compro-mising their operations. Cooper Industries’ Dammam plant will supply state-of-the-art products from Cooper B-Line and Cooper Crouse-Hinds to support region’s burgeoning oil and gas in-dustry.

Cooper Industries, recognized for its leadership, expertise and innovation in the global industrial market, has opened a new manufac-turing facility located in Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The new facility is Cooper’s first in the Gulf Countries Continuum (GCC) and will function as a 100% U.S.-owned entity operating within Sau-di Arabia, which represents one of the first of its kind in this region.

The new facility will significant-ly reduce Cooper’s delivery lead times for product orders and speci-fication configurations in the GCC. Located less than 20 kilometers from Saudi Aramco headquarters in Dhahran, the Cooper facility will offer an extensive line of electri-cal products, components and en-gineering services for the region’s growing oil and gas market. The new 50,000-square foot facility has been delegated as an Aramco-ap-proved facility for Cooper B-Line produced products, which involved passing the Saudi oil company’s strenuous quality management as-sessments and strict Saudisation provisions.

“The new facility in Dammam is

a clear illustration of Cooper’s stead-fast commitment to this important re-gion,” said Cooper CEO Kirk Hachi-gian. “Not only will it bring first-rate employment, training and tech-nology opportuni-ties to a region that continues to grow and prosper, but it will consistently

deliver high-quality, world-class manufacturing products to custom-ers in Saudi Arabia and the entire Gulf Region.”

The facility is beginning its opera-tions with the production of Cooper B-Line and Cooper Crouse-Hinds products for distribution to local markets. Cooper B-Line will offer the region a broad line of cable tray products, including aluminum, steel and fiberglass cable ladder, as well as its cable tray and Flextray® wire basket products. Cooper B-Line will also provide its best-in-class specification engineering services at the facility, which will provide pre- and post-sale engineering and technical support to custom-ers throughout the region. Cooper B-Line’s presence in this area rep-resents a continuation of the com-pany’s investment in the global oil and gas industry, adding the GCC to its global coverage area that al-ready includes offices in Korea, London, Calgary and Houston.

“Cooper B-Line prides itself on service, providing added value and engineering support every step of the way, from product specification to installation,” said Kevin Kissling, President of Cooper B-Line. “We were seeing opportunities arise in this critical region that required experts on the ground, servicing customers and projects in-person, rather than

from across an ocean. With our presence in Dammam, our capa-bilities to serve and support cus-tomers throughout the world are greatly increased.”

Cooper Crouse-Hinds will pro-vide a comprehensive line of NEC lighting products and switchgear panels for the region’s oil and gas industry. The company’s initial selection of products is expected to grow to include instrumenta-tion products and IEC-approved switchgear assemblies, as well as additional leading edge technol-ogy product lines to serve the oil and gas industry throughout the region.

“The location of this facility will result in shorter product lead times that meet customer require-ments, improved customer service and increased continuity in our relationships throughout the re-gion,” said Curt Andersson, Presi-dent of Cooper Crouse-Hinds. “With many projects requiring quick turnaround and attentive, on-location customer support, Cooper Industries’ local presence in Dammam is critical to our fu-ture business efforts in the area.”

The initial Cooper product lines were chosen to support target end markets in a region that relies heavily on the oil and gas industry. However, Cooper plans to broad-en its product offering to support additional markets throughout the GCC in the coming years.

The National Electrical Manu-facturers Association (NEMA) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) have called on Congress to support the enlarging the Energy Ef-ficient Commercial Building Tax Deduction from $1.80 per square foot to $3 per square foot in order to help stimulate immediate job creation. A letter to Congressional members was co-signed by more than 50 organiza-tions in the construction and environ-mental arenas. A copy of the letter is available at www.efficientbuildings.org/legislative_update.html.

In 2005, NEMA and AIA advo-cated a tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot for the design and in-stallation of qualified energy efficient building systems in new building con-struction or in the renovation of exist-ing buildings. Although the deduction, which was enacted that year, has been successfully used to build and retrofit energy-efficient buildings, the cur-rent economic crisis has reduced the amount of building design, construc-tion, and renovations nationwide. In addition, because some energy effi-cient systems are more expensive to design, build, and install than their less efficient counterparts, the initial increased capital costs often dissuade owners from installing these systems.

According to NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis, the increase would provide a valuable job-stimu-lating incentive to retrofit and reno-vate existing commercial buildings. “This tax incentive has a proven re-cord of success in supporting thou-sands of construction, electrical, design, contractor, and manufactur-ing jobs prior to the recession. An in-crease is needed to address tight capi-tal and other financing issues facing building owners. This is the type of measure that fits with the outlines of

President Obama’s jobs stimulus an-nouncement on December 8, 2009,” Gaddis said.

AIA Executive Vice President/CEO Christine McEntee said, “By increasing the deduction to $3 per square foot, Congress could imme-diately stimulate building design, construction, and renovation across the country, spurring job creation in every state and region, while enhanc-ing our energy independence and improving our nation’s infrastructure for the 21st century.”

NEMA is the association of electri-cal and medical imaging equipment manufacturers. Founded in 1926 and headquartered near Washington, D.C., its approximately 450 member companies manufacture products used in the generation, transmission and distribution, control, and end use of electricity. These products are used in utility, industrial, com-mercial, institutional, and residen-tial applications. The association’s Medical Imaging & Technology Al-liance (MITA) Division represents manufacturers of cutting-edge medi-cal diagnostic imaging equipment including MRI, CT, x-ray, and ultra-sound products. Worldwide sales of NEMA-scope products exceed $120 billion. In addition to its headquarters in Rosslyn, Virginia, NEMA also has offices in Beijing and Mexico City.

For more than 150 years, members of the American Institute of Archi-tects have worked with one another and their communities to create more valuable, healthy, secure, and sus-tainable buildings and cityscapes. Customized Financing Eases Ex-pense of Mandatory Life Safety System Upgrades

Gamewell-FCI by Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announces the launch of a flexible financing pro-gram designed to make the expense of life safety system upgrades or build-outs more manageable and affordable. Leasing, loans, flex-ible payments and bundled financ-ing can enable facility managers and building owners to conserve working capital, preserve existing credit lines and overcome budget constraints.

In collaboration with LEAF Fi-nancial Corporation, Gamewell-FCI Engineered Systems Distribu-tors throughout the U.S. can offer the latest fire alarm and emergency communications (a.k.a. mass noti-fication) technologies, along with tailored financing solutions, for any

type or size of commercial proper-ty. For example, a fixed rate lease with an annual payment structure would be ideal for educational or government facilities planning to update systems over time. A large healthcare complex networking multiple fire alarms and adding an emergency communications sys-tem might opt for a bundled loan package to cover equipment and service. A loan with a deferred payment plan could ease the finan-cial burden of a mandatory system replacement for a small business or church facility.

According to Steve Birdsall, Gamewell-FCI’s Vice President of Sales, the new program offers com-mercial properties an affordable way to make required life safety system upgrades. “Fire alarm codes are becoming more stringent and are being more firmly enforced

Convia and Legrand Help Cus-tomers Address Energy Manage-ment Demands with Smart, Sus-tainable Solutions Displayed at Ecobuild 2009 Strengthened by their strategic alliance, Convia/A Herman Miller Company and Legrand/Wiremold are expand-ing flexible, sustainable spaces into commercial buildings across the nation. From the United States Green Building Coun-cil’s (USGBC) Washington, D.C. headquarters to the iconic Empire State Building, leading facilities and organizations are looking to Convia and Legrand to achieve long-term savings and optimal energy efficiency. The two companies will join together to showcase their latest develop-ments resulting from their part-nership at The National Institute of Building Sciences’ annual Ecobuild® America conference.

“The demand for flexible, envi-ronmentally responsive environ-ments is intensifying as building owners across various industries seek to cut energy consumption and costs,” said Randy Storch, President of Convia. “Our part-nership with Legrand has enabled us to not only advance our tech-nology to continually meet these needs, but has also provided us with a greater ability to drive and capture growth opportunities in new, broad-reaching markets.”

Convia’s parent company Her-man Miller announced a strategic alliance with Legrand last spring, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of the en-

ergy efficiency for commercial buildings. Under the terms of the agreement, the Convia tech-nology – which allows for the integrated control and monitor-ing of plug loads, lighting and VAC/thermostat set points from a simple and intelligent control and management platform – is integrated into Wiremold® wire and cable management systems (e.g. Walkerflex® modular wir-ing system, floor boxes, poke-thru devices and architectural columns). With control and mon-itoring of office plug loads made possible through the partnership, the “Convia-enabled” technol-ogy allows for maximum space flexibility and effective energy management from everything from the infrastructure to the workstation.

Providing Complete Flexibility for Commercial Spaces

Leveraging the intelligence provided by Convia’s smart building platform, the companies introduced their first joint com-mercial offering: the Convia-enabled Wiremold System. The system, which is on display at Ecobuild, combines modular wir-ing, integrated energy controls, and flexible pathways resulting in a multi-functional wiring platform that provides complete flexibility for the electrical infra-structure and seamless integra-tion of energy controls and sen-sors. Eliminating the constraints of conventional electrical sys-tems, the system allows users to create flexible spaces that can be

easily modified and adjusted as needs change. New applications can be added and integrated with the existing system at any time, future-proofing the building for any technology application.

“Building controls and energy management platforms have transformed the built environ-ment with their ability to provide maximum space flexibility and effective energy management,” said Brian DiBella, Vice Presi-dent and General Manager of Legrand/Wiremold. “With Con-via we have been able to raise the bar even higher by adding intelli-gence to these systems, enabling our products to monitor and track energy usage and drastically re-duce consumption for maximum energy savings.”

Tracking Progress for Contin-ued Building Performance

As part of their ongoing com-mitment to helping customers meet energy goals and maintain building performance, Convia recently introduced its Energy Track Reporting Tool™, a next-generation application that pro-vides accurate, quantitative data on energy usage in a space. Gone are the days of making energy management decisions based on estimates of energy use. With the Energy Track tool, users can make informed decisions about how to manage, monitor and control their energy use and deliver a more efficient, smart space. When used in conjunc-tion with the Wiremold system, the technology provides users

GREEN SPACES Receive a Boost of Intelligencewith an end-to-end level of con-trol. “Energy Track provides users with a complete picture of energy use and allows them to make changes from a single zone down to the circuit level,” noted DiBella.

The tool displays a space’s actual energy usage on a simple and intuitive dashboard inter-face. Energy monitoring chips integrated into the Convia-en-abled control components allow for accurate reporting at a zone (e.g. a private office, individu-al workstation or workstation cluster) or circuit level. Based on this granular and highly ac-curate data, users can accurately report energy use and modify their strategies based on this data for immediate and ongo-ing improvement. Visitors to the Ecobuild booth can view the monitoring and tracking capa-bilities of Energy Track as re-flected in a real-world setting: the USGBC’s new headquar-ters, which features the Convia technology and is expected to receive a LEED® rating of Plati-num.

“The rapid of development of technology continues to change the way we work and live, but unfortunately the spaces where we work have remained relative-ly stagnant,” added Storch. “Our goal at Convia and Legrand is to provide building technology that can keep up with today’s evolving demands, and be easy adapted to address future needs and sustainable goals.”

Cooper Power Systems, a division of Cooper Industries plc (NYSE: CBE), is helping homeowners be-come better consumers of electrical power with the introduction of the company’s new, in-home, peak load indicator. The wall outlet-sized, plug-in indicator, developed in co-operation with Delaware Electric Cooperative, utilizes colored LED lights to notify customers when a peak power use period is approach-ing or underway.

The indicator contains a series of LED lights to inform consumers of either approaching or occurring peak power use periods, advising them to reduce consumption. Con-sumers are informed that reduced energy use during peak power peri-ods could have a significant impact on both the power delivery system and on the customer’s monthly elec-tric bill. Using the Cooper Power Systems Yukon Advanced Energy Services Platform, the in-home in-dicator receives hourly signals from the utility to confirm that continu-ous communication is taking place.

The Cooper Power Systems in-home indicator is an expansion of Dela-ware’s “Beat-the-Peak” program, an effort to increase communication with customers and reduce electricity use during peak times. In 2008 the company’s tech-nology helped Dela-ware Electric save more than $2 million, by minimizing power requirements during monthly peak peri-ods.

“Our members now help us manage our peak load demands by responding to Beat-the-Peak sig-nals played on the radio, on television, or sent in e-mail or text messages,” said Bill Andrew, President and CEO of Delaware Electric Cooperative. “With Beat the Peak we’ve been able to cut our rates in the face of rising costs. The in-home indicator is key to the long-term effectiveness of that pro-gram.”

The in-home indicator is offered free of charge to Delaware Electric Cooperative members. The Co-op recently signed an agreement with Cooper which will enable it to install the devices in more than 40,000 homes in its service ter-ritory. Once installed, Delaware solicits feedback from consumers on the effectiveness of the device and how it is being utilized in each home.

“The in-home indicator is the result of Cooper Power Systems listening to and working with our customers to meet their needs,” said Tom Pitstick, Vice-President and General Manager of the Ener-gy Automation Solutions division at Cooper Power Systems. “Dela-ware is a forward-looking coop-erative and ideas like this will help shape the future of the Smart Grid

and electric power delivery.”Cooper Power Systems: Commit-

Matrix Systems, a Dayton, Ohio-based security solutions provider, has released its Frontier™ 2010 access con-trol software, which features built-in interfaces for both Schlage and Videx® CyberLock® wireless hardware, plus improved import/export configurabil-ity.

Frontier 2010 is a comprehensive and scalable security solution that provides real-time monitoring of access doors and alarm points for local and remote locations. Frontier can be configured for virtually any size installation—in the transportation, business, education, government, industrial and healthcare industries.

The latest version of Frontier offers built-in interfaces for Carmel, Ind.-based Schlage wireless lock solutions, which install five to ten times faster than wired lock alternatives. Combin-ing Schlage with Frontier 2010 simpli-fies installation and eliminates the need for carpentry, patching and repainting, resulting in significant savings on both retrofit and new commercial building construction projects.

Schlage wireless lock systems provide the same online, real-time capabilities as wired systems—such as access privilege changes and audit records that are avail-able at the central control terminal—all from a common database, which simpli-fies data entry/management.

Frontier 2010 also has a built-in in-terface for CyberLock, a non-wired, stand-alone security option that can save facilities 60 to 70-percent in an-cillary door security costs. Created by Corvallis, Ore.-based Videx, Cyber-Lock replaces conventional key cylin-ders with electronic cylinders that allow door access only with preprogrammed/

assigned electronic CyberKeys®. Cy-berLock records access events using Matrix Systems Frontier 2010 access control software.

CyberLock is an affordable security alternative, offering savings on instal-lation compared to conventional door card readers, and less expensive equip-ment than wireless door entries. The Matrix Systems–Videx integration is the perfect solution for securing ancil-lary doors where audits are necessary

but the security level doesn’t justify the installation or equipment costs of con-ventional door card readers. Doors such as communication closets, fence gates, unoccupied out-parcel buildings, lock-ers, new doors, remote entries and even padlocks can now easily be added to a facility’s Matrix Systems’ Frontier 2010 access control system.

Also new in Frontier 2010 is a wizard-based import/export capability that al-lows users to customize data formatting, data fields and the amount of data that is transferred. The wizard is compat-ible with most popular personnel data software formats that human resources, IT, law enforcement, security and other

professions use. The cutting-edge graphics technology

that debuted in Frontier 2009 is further enhanced in Frontier 2010. Users can now import background raster images such as JPG, BMP or TIFF files and combine them with imported native vector images such as CAD or custom-drawn images that are totally editable within the software. Additionally, a user can import a three-dimensional CAD drawing of a facility’s floor plan, which details doors, alarm points and other access control features, and overlay it onto a satellite image of the location and surrounding grounds for a total security overview.

Frontier 2010 is compatible with Mi-crosoft® Windows® 2003 Server, XP, Vista, and Windows® 7 as well as SQL Server 2005 and Crystal Reports XI. Frontier is an open architecture program utilizing an ODBC-compliant database that allows access by a multitude of third-party programs and interfaces.

Adding an “exclamation point” to architectural and landscape design, the new Tornado bollard from U.S. Architectural Lighting offers a mod-ern sculptural approach to public area lighting, along with significant energy-savings.

Introduced in two models – the TNA with asymmetric light distribution and the TNS with a symmetric light pattern – the Tornado’s unique inverted shape provides glare-free illumination to en-hance pedestrian safety.

Model TNA (asymmetric) is de-signed for pathways, curbs and drive-ways where perimeter lighting is needed. Model TNS (symmetric) is typically placed in open areas where illumination is required on all sides of the bollard, such as civic plazas or commercial centers. Both models are often installed on the same project.

Either model can be specified in metal halide (39 to 100W); HPS (50 to 100W); CFL (26 to 42W); and a new LED system, exclusive to U. S. Architectural Lighting. The optics are concealed within the bollard head but easily-accessible for servicing.

Incorporating a micro-prism lens, Tornado produces a “soft” lighting effect that creates pools of diffused illumination, devoid of streaks, shad-ows and hard edges, often common with standard bollards. Because of its reverse taper, Tornado is illumi-nated by surface reflections from the surrounding pavement to enhance its sculptural design at night.

Tornado’s housing is constructed from durable corrosion-resistant low copper cast aluminum alloy with a 1/4-inch minimum wall thickness. The bollard features an electrostati-cally-applied polyester powder-coat finish baked at 400° for maximum hardness and durability.

A comprehensive Tornado product brochure is now available by contact-ing U.S. Architectural Lighting at (800)877-6537. For more informa-

Expanding the already extensive business information tool set available to distributors, Activant Solutions Inc. (Activant®) introduced the latest ver-sion of Activant Business Analyzer™ solution.

“The addition of the new bookings cube, user-defined columns, and user defined class dimensions added across more of the information cubes makes the Activant Business Analyzer solu-tion an even strong tool,” said Trent Greenawalt, IT Manager for Ander-son Pump & Process. “I also like the new interface, which streamlines the user’s interactions with the program.”

The latest version of Activant Busi-ness Analyzer software makes even more information available to dis-tributors, including bookings infor-mation, which allows users to analyze the orders placed on a given day. One of the capabilities the product allows distributors to do is track changes to

existing orders based on the original order date or the date of the modifi-cation as compared to promised date, providing even more flexibility in analysis related to their customer per-formance.

“Additional dimensions for analyz-ing data have also been added through-out the Activant Business Analyzer solution,” said Kevin Roach, Execu-tive Vice President and General Man-ager of Activant. “One key dimension that was added in numerous places are user defined fields class fields. This dimension of analytics allows our us-ers to analyze information by class related to the data. For example, sales managers can now analyze all sales and order backlog information by the customer’s primary class, to deter-mine which type of customers are the most profitable.”

Purchasing managers can view pur-chasing order history to analyze the

purchases made over time. The solu-tion allows them to view what suppli-ers material is being purchased from, the trending of the purchases by item class, and other pertinent historical in-formation related to purchases.

Another key feature new to the Activant Business Analyzer solution is the ability to store information in customizable, user-defined columns. Users can now store information re-lated to data such as customer or item data within the solution. Information may come from within the distribu-tor’s database, or it may be a data ele-ment sourced from outside of the sys-tem. The Activant Business Analyzer solution provides for an easy import and updating of user defined fields.

Sponsoring Organization: BW (Ben) Marguglio, LLCSponsoring Organization’s Address: POB 8; Cold Spring, NY, USA 10516Contact: Ben MarguglioContact Email Address: [email protected] Telephone Number: 845-265-0123Seminar Website: www.hightech-nologyseminars.com

Following are descriptions of each seminar:Human Error Prevention SeminarIn addition to discovery and invention, human error prevention can be the greatest contributor to improved productivity, safety and quality. Persons responsible for

improving productivity, safety and quality should consider attending this seminar. The principles and practices of hu-man error prevention are universally applicable regardless of the type of industrial, commercial or govern-mental enterprise, and regardless of the type of function performed within the enterprise. This seminar is truly unique and up to date with the latest developments in human error prevention. Mar-guglio’s new taxonomy of human error causal factors and human error-related models demonstrate his leadership in this subject. Examples and case studies amply reinforce the human error preven-tion principles and practices. This seminar covers: * Classifi ca-tions of human error; * The four levels of human error; * The three levels of barriers to human error and to the hazards activated by human error; * The four types of barriers at each barrier level; * Methods by which to make barriers effective; * Error-inducing condi-tions; * Behaviors to counteract error-inducing conditions; * Thought processes and behaviors leading to non-conservative decisions; * Thought processes and behaviors leading to conservative decisions; * Techniques to prevent recurrence of error - e.g., coaching; * Metrics; * Defense in depth. Root Cause Analysis Seminar

This seminar is unique. Margug-lio’s approach is that various root cause analysis techniques are:Substantially similar in the way by which the data are collected to begin with; Differ only in the ways by which the collected data are organized and formatted; • Substantially similar in the way by which the collected data are analyzed.Marguglio provides a standard-ized analytical thought process which makes for greater consistency in the application of each tech-nique and for greater effectiveness in the analytical results. Marguglio’s analytical templates are unique. All sub-systems of a problem reporting, root cause analysis, and preventive corrective action system; • Performance of root cause analysis using the following tech-niques - Change Analysis, Failure Mode & Effects Analysis, Hazard-Barrier-Effects Analysis, Time-line Analysis, Cause & Effects Analysis (Fishbone), Probabilistic Risk/Safety Analysis with Event and Fault Trees, and Management & Oversight Risk Analysis.

Nuclear Quality Requirements for Procurement of Design & Construction Services and Com-ponents Seminar

This seminar covers dozens of contractual clauses that make quality and economic sense for the procurement of design and con-struction services and components for both new facilities and major modifi cations to existing facilities. Although the focus in this seminar is on contractual clauses that are applicable to nuclear powered electricity generating facilities and U.S. Department Of Energy nuclear laboratories, and although ANSI/ASME NQA-1 and ISO-9001 will be the basic source documents, quality and procurement engineers from other types of high technology, complex facilities (e.g., gas and oil facilities, ports, military facilities) would defi nitely benefi t from this

seminar because the clauses can equally apply to these facilities. For quality and economic benefi t, the contractual clauses go beyond the standards noted above. The implementation of a few of these clauses can have the potential for avoiding tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars in unnecessary expenditures. The major elements of each clause will be described and the logic supporting the technical and economic benefi ts of the clause will be discussed.

The Commercial Grade Item Dedication (CGID) process will be described, along with Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, it being a necessary element of CGID.

QEH&S Auditing - ISO 19000 SeminarThis seminar covers in detail the el-ements of planning an audit system and the process for performing and individual audit. The differences in the process for internal audit, supplier audit and third party audit are covered as well. The means by which to consolidate and integrate quality, environmental, health and safety audit (and security audit, as well) are addressed.Upon completion of this seminar, you’ll be able to: • Understand and use audit terminology; • Under-stand and use a “compliance-based” or “effectiveness-based” audit objective, a “risk-based” or non-risk based audit scope, and “system-based” / “program-based”, “performance-based” and “results-based” data collection techniques; • Perform and lead audits; • Design, develop, implement and assess an audit system.

Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has won a contract worth approximately 100 million Euros to design, manufac-ture and supply the high voltage (HV) subsea power export cables that will connect the London Ar-ray wind farm to the UK grid. The contract was placed with Nexans by the consortium of DONG En-ergy, E.ON and Masdar, which is currently building the world’s largest offshore wind farm in the Thames Estuary.

The London Array wind farm is being installed on a 233 km2

site located around 20 km off the UK coast. Construction is tak-ing place in two phases: the first phase of 630 MW, comprising 175 turbines, is expected to be completed and generating power in 2012; the future second phase will add capacity to bring the to-tal to 1,000 MW. When complete, the farm will supply enough pow-er for around 750,000 UK homes.

The power export cable contract comprises the design, manufac-ture and supply of four 150 kV XLPE submarine power cables to be laid in parallel, each 53 to 54 km in length, with three cop-per core conductors with a cross-section of 630 mm2 for the main length and 800mm² at each cable end. Nexans will deliver two of the cables in 2011, and two in 2012. All cables will be delivered in single continuous lengths from Nexans’ factory in Halden, Nor-way. The cables will also incor-porate fibre optic elements manu-factured at the Nexans factory in Rognan, Norway. In addition, the contract also includes the cable

accessories such as repair joints and terminations.

“This new contract is the result of several years of Nexans in-volvement in the offshore wind sector in general and in the UK in particular. We are happy to demonstrate once again with this major contract Nexans’ abil-ity to provide key cable solutions for a better deployment of wind farm infrastructures” said Krister Granlie, Managing Director of Nexans’ Umbilicals & Submarine High Voltage Business Group.

“World-leading designs such as London Array demonstrate why the UK is currently regarded as one of the pace-setters in offshore wind energy, and we are very proud to be co-operating in this prestigious project with some of the key developers in this dynam-ic market”, says Frédéric Vincent, Nexans CEO.

The offshore wind farm mar-ket: a great potential for growthOver the past four years, Nex-ans’ share of the offshore wind farm market has tripled in size. Considering current political and financial incentive policies, par-ticularly in Europe, this market will continue to gain importance in the future.

In this market, Nexans offers complete turnkey solutions for its clients, from manufacturing in its specialized production unit based in Norway to installation using advanced, dedicated systems de-signed in-house. High voltage cables for typical offshore proj-ects are usually produced in one single length of about 50 km – which requires specific industrial

know-how and manufacturing technology - and they can weigh up to 120 kg per meter of cable according to the conductor cross-section. Thus, a single cable can weigh up to 7,000 tons.

Over the past few years, Nexans has demonstrated its expertise through participation in many offshore wind farm projects worldwide: Barrow, Horns Rev, Lynn and Inner Dowsing, Wolfe Island, etc.

Recently, the Group has also proved its technological commit-ment to the continued develop-ment of the offshore wind farm market by supplying and install-ing the submarine power cable for the world’s first floating wind turbine in Norway.

With energy as the basis of its development, Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, offers an ex-tensive range of cables and ca-bling systems. The Group is a global player in the infrastruc-ture, industry, building and Local Area Network markets. Nexans addresses a series of market segments from energy, transport and telecom networks to shipbuilding, oil and gas, nuclear power, automotive, electronics, aeronautics, han-dling and automation. With an industrial presence in 39 coun-tries and commercial activities worldwide, Nexans employs 22,400 people and had sales in 2008 of 6.8 billion euros. Nex-ans is listed on NYSE Euron-ext Paris, compartment A. For more information visit: www.nexans.com.

Alerts can be triggered manually or triggered automatically via integra-tion with NOTIFIER fire alarm and mass notification systems. The RE-ACT Console allows authorized us-ers to initiate and update alerts, man-age users, track the status of events, update media content (i.e. maps, graphics, photographs) and manage the system configuration. To quickly launch general or predetermined noti-fications, “Single Button Alert” panic buttons can be configured to initiate alerts to specific audiences quickly with the click of the mouse or press of a button on the keyboard.

IDEAL Industries, Inc., a global leader in connectors, testers, tools and supplies, today announced that it signed on December 31, 2009, a definitive agreement to acquire pri-vately held Western Forge, a Colo-rado Springs-based manufacturer of pliers, screwdrivers and adjust-able wrenches for the professional trades and the general consumer. The company, which will continue to be known as Western Forge, will become a wholly owned sub-sidiary of IDEAL.

Randy Thompson, a 22-year vet-eran of IDEAL with broad manu-facturing, operational, and general management experience, has been named General Manager for West-ern Forge.

“The acquisition of Western Forge represents another signifi-cant step in the IDEAL strategy to broaden our internal product design and American made manufactur-ing capabilities,” said Jim James, President/CEO of IDEAL. “An additional benefit is that we will now expand our presence among the general trades where Western Forge has a strong customer base

and where we see significant op-portunities for growth with other IDEAL products.”

Through this acquisition, IDE-AL will gain an important addition to its U.S.-based manufacturing platform supporting its fast-grow-ing hand tools business. West-ern Forge’s 345,000 square foot manufacturing plant is an Ameri-can standard in premier metal craftsmanship, offering the latest in forging, heat treatment, handle extrusion, machining and plating operations.

“Western Forge has a proud her-itage spanning more than four de-cades of manufacturing the highest quality hand tools for a blue chip list of OEM and retail custom-ers,” said Dave Juday, Chairman of the Board for IDEAL. “I join in welcoming their highly trained manufacturing staff -- individuals who know the value of the ‘Made In America’ label -- to our IDEAL family of companies.”
