About the GLOBE ProgramThe GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) program is a worldwide hands-on science and education program that aims at the development of awareness of one’s “place” in the natural world. Through the use of environmental science-related activities and an integration of local place-based learning, students develop an enlightened recognition of the relationship between self, community, and the global world.

The GLOBE Program focuses on learners at the primary and secondary education levels, including their educators. Through the use of science activities and the manipulation of scientific materials under the guidance of an educator in the learner’s environment, learners grow to understand the interactions between self, community, and the world, as they become a global citizen scientist.

Teachers are trained to provide this innovative program in an adapted manner that incorporates their community’s specific cultural and educational needs. There are opportunities to make connections on a global scale as GLOBE schools across the world share knowledge and collaborate on environmental activities. An outdoor education component is often incorporated, as many of the activities are undertaken in the field.

With GLOBE, students:

• acquire knowledge and skills in science

• learn the value of data collection and research

• connect to a network of scientists and STEM experts professionals and learn about STEM careers and opportunities

• participate in research collaborations with other students and scientists

• develop 21st century skills

• acquire an awareness and knowledge of other cultures

• develop leadership skills

• develop awareness and responsibility for the environment

In a nutshell, GLOBE supports the development of ethical, informed and engaged citizens with scientific training skills.

Teachers participating in this GLOBE workshop will be equipped and certified to participate in this program and engage their students in authentic scientific data collection, inquiry, and analysis.

About our Faculty LeaderFor Dr. Tina Cartwright, a life-long interest in science began with a 7th grade project aimed at determining if current cloud conditions can predict weather patterns. Her friend’s father was a pilot, and took them to the National Weather Service in Charleston. “I was simply enamored by

the technology,” says Dr. Cartwright, associate professor of education at Marshall University and former West Virginia State Climatologist.

While working on her undergraduate studies in geography and physics at West Virginia University, a time in her life that she describes as “transformative,” Cartwright received a prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. “I am a firm believer in the importance of undergraduate research, and it had a tremendous impact on me,” she said. Cartwright went on to receive her master’s and doctorate degrees in meteorology at Florida State University. After working as a research meteorologist for MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory in Massachusetts, she returned home and began teaching meteorology at West Virginia State University. She currently serves an Associate Professor of Science Education at Marshall University where she focuses her research on enhancing elementary science education and better understanding students’ thinking regarding weather, climate, and climate change. For these pursuits, Cartwright has secured several NSF awards – a $148,000 grant in 2006, $799,990 grant in 2007, and $1.2 million grant in 2011.

The 2007 award allowed her to begin COMETS (COMmunities Educating Tomorrow’s Scientists), an afterschool science enrichment program for low-income, under-represented, and minority students in grades 3-5 in Kanawha County. “There isn’t enough emphasis on STEM fields in elementary school, and this is a critical deficit we need to overcome in order to see more students pursue higher education in STEM,” she said. “Growing up, I was encouraged and expected to go to college. I hope to help students broaden their horizons to include STEM education.”
