blood bags. Delcon s.r.l. can never be considered responsible for any damage whenever the products are used for different purposes.
1.2 Power Supply Schematic diagrams: PSUP-SE-E1-R1 Sheet 1 and 2 HWELDT-CA-C1
The operation power supply is: VINPUT: 230/115 Vac 50/60Hz VOUTPUT: adjustable 22-27 Vdc The 220/115 V input line voltage, by connection point A,B,C,D, is connected to the power supply board PSUP-E1-R1. The primary coil of the transformer is connected to the board PSUP-E1-R1 by J3. The secondary of the toroidal transformer T1 delivers 25Vac 260VA and is connected to the rectifier bridge DT1. DT1 is connected to the board PSUP-E1-R1 by J1 where between pin 1 and 2 there is a unstable dc voltage while on the pin 3 there is ac component that by D4, R11, DZ1 creates a 12Vdc and turns on the relay RELAY1. The power transistors Q1 and Q2, the feedback resistors R6 and R7, voltage reference U1 and comparator U3 constitute a stable linear power supply with an adjustable voltage output between 20 and 27 Volts. This voltage is measurable between pin 1 and pin 2 of the connector J2 and it is adjusted to 24 Volt by PT1. When the 220/115 V line voltage is removed, immediately the relay RELAY1 turns off and by R13 discharges the capacitor C8 so the output voltage quickly goes down to about 0 Volt. NOTE 1: buzzer LS1, when enabled, emits a continuous beep indicating a problem regarding the output voltage of the Linear Power Supply (value between pin1 and pin2 of J2 is above 27Vdc). NOTE 2: Linear Power Supply PSUP-SE-E1-R1 is pin-to-pin compatible with the older version PSUP-SE-E1-R0, therefore they are interchangeable.
1.3 RF module Schematic diagram: HWELDT-CA-C1
RF Module is composed of the RF power generator inside the closed metallic box, interface board RFG-E2-R0 and a heat sink. RF module has three connection points, J1 for 24Vdc power supply, a connector with four contacts for driving the unit by control board, and coaxial cable with SMB connector for RF power output. WARNING: the length of the coaxial cable MUST NOT be changed.

1.4 RF Control Board Schematic diagram: HWELDT-SE-E1-R1 sheet 1and 2
It provides all the controls of the sealing parameters like the timing, the moist detection, the peak detection and the RF management through a microcontroller with custom firmware. The board drives the RF module by connector J4:
1. Input pin 1 NTC/PTC for detecting the temperature of the RF module. There are about 4.8 V when the temperature is 25 °C
2. Output pin 3 GATE RF is driven to about 0 V when the RF module must begin a seal while when it is off there are about 24V
3. Input/Output pin 4 IN RF MOIST detects if before and during the seal there is a spark or a moist tube.
The sealing procedure starts by closing one micro switch on the clamp or on the gun. When you press the micro switch of the clamp by pin 2 of J3 and transistor Q5 the pin RB4 of microcontroller U1 commutates from 5V to about 0V. Now the system begins the procedure for a new seal: it closes the clamp (by U5A and Q8), turns on the relay RL1 (RB2 =5Vdc) and it checks for about 150ms for moist on tube; if there is moist it aborts the procedure, opens the clamp, turns on the buzzer and it actives Led Moist (pin RC3=5Vdc) otherwise it turns on the RF module (RB1=5 Vdc , Gate RF = 0Vdc). If the electrodes are shorted during a sealing due to sparks the system turns off the RF module, activates Led Moist (pin RC3=5Vdc) and it turns on the buzzer, otherwise it turns on the RF module (RB1=5 Vdc , Gate RF = 0Vdc). Instead when there is a request of sealing from handgun the input signal IN RF MOIST changes from 0 Vdc to 12Vdc and by Q3 and Q4 RB0 changes from 0V to 5V and the system begins a procedure for a new seal. It checks for about 150ms for moist on tube and then it turns on the RF module (RB1=5 Vdc , Gate RF = 0Vdc) if there is not a moist. If the electrodes are shorted during a sealing due to sparks the system turns off the RF module, activates Led Moist (pin RC3=5Vdc) and it turns on the buzzer. The Led Ready (RC1=5Vdc) is on when the system is ready for a new seal, while it is turned off during the welding. On the board there are three trimmers to better adjust the system to the various types of use:
1. Trimmer PT3 adjusts the sealing time for the clamp between 0.5 to 4 seconds with the voltage between TP1 and ground VTP1 adjustable between 0.6 to 5V. TSEAL = 0.80 * VTP1. The factory value is 1.4V.
2. Trimmer PT4 adjusts the sealing for the Handgun between 0.5 to 4 seconds with the voltage between TP2 and ground VTP2 adjustable between 0.6 to 5V . TSEAL = 0.80 * VTP2. The factory value is 1.79V.
3. Trimmer PT1 adjusts the Duty Cycle of the driver U5A for the coil of the clamp. Duty cycle 100% VTP6=5Vdc while duty cycle 0% VTP6=5Vdc (voltage between TP6 and ground). The factory value is 1.92V to prevent the over heating of the coil during an intensive use of the system.
Theses adjustments are normally not necessary but in case of emergency please remember that the minimum sealing time is 0.5 seconds. WARNING: an excessive RF emission (long sealing time) means more energy to manage, higher risk of burns and leakage on tubing and higher risk of system overheating with possible electronic damages of the amplifier: never stress too much the electronic with useless long timing. The system detects by NTC inside of the RF module the temperature of the RF generator and then turns on the fan if the temperature is over 42 °C and turns off Hemoweld-T® if the temperature is over 70°C. When the system is in over-temperature state the LED-HT is lit (RC0= 5Vdc).

WARNING!
• Never switch on the unit without a gun or a clamp properly connected: you might seriously damage the RF controller board and/or the RF module.
• All the RF cables of the HEMOWELD systems are properly calibrated to fulfil a specific impedance generated at 40.68 MHz: never change the cables or their lengths, you may compromise the efficiency of the system with possible damages.
• Guns and clamps: these devices need some specific adjustments done by the manufacturer such as the cables lengths, the position of the RF rings on the coppers coils, the electrodes position and so on. To avoid any unbalancing of the system never tamper these adjustments, which, please remember, CAN BE DONE ONLY AT DELCON laboratories with some specific instrumentation.
NOTICES: • Even if the RF cables available on the market looks like the original one PLEASE NEVER USE IT.
The commercially available cables might have different behaviours at 40.68 MHz and they can compromise the correct tuning of the system with possible damages.

2.3.1 Suggestions and recommendations
• The electrodes of the handgun cannot be adjusted to have a perfect parallelism. The only one thing you can do is to check the front hexagonal screw on the electrode holder if it’s properly tight, because on the contrary, the electrodes may move compromising the sealing procedure.
• While the handgun is sealing, the tube holder on the front part must always be in its position with all the four screws tight: never use the handgun without it!
• The internal RF cable is calibrated: never use different cables and never cut or reduce the original length.
• The RF control coil has an external coupling ring that is used to tune the RF energy inside that specific device: avoid to move this ring otherwise you compromise a correct tuning of the Handgun with a possible failure of entire system.
• Be aware the two screws on front of the handgun are screwed into some plastic material: never tight too much, you will destroy the thread.
• Always recommend to the Operator to clean often the electrodes with some gauze and alcohol: old and dry residues of dirt or blood are difficult to clean and once you have compromised the cleaning, you have compromised also the sealing reliability.
2.4 Electrodes Alignment procedure
The alignment of the electrodes can be done through the two screws that hold the fixed electrode while the mobile electrode cannot be adjusted. The fixed electrode has a central fulcrum on the back side that will permit some variation of its position by the differential tightening of its screws. By hands move the anchor of the electromagnetic coil to close completely the electrodes and do the best adjusting through the two screws, to have a perfect parallelism. WARNING! Any bad parallelism will always compromise the quality of the sealing and the performance of the system because it could produce a spark and burning during the sealing.
Please be aware that the parallelism is a crucial point for a good performance of the clamp.
Mobile electrod
e
Fixed electrod
e Screws for
Parallelism adjustment
• If the electrodes are not perfectly parallel you may have a bad sealing, potentially dangerous for leakage and rupture.
The Hemoweld-T® has been projected with a wide margin of safety. Nevertheless, after plenty of sealing procedures or a strong shock, some problems might appear. In most cases it’s enough to check the unit and make some maintenance but in some other cases it might be necessary a repair.

3.2 Possible problems Possible situations:
1. While I’m sealing I see a spark or the buzzer rings.
2. It works but the seal is bad.
3. The tubing is broken. Possible Solutions:
☺ 1. The electrodes might be wet or dirty. Clean with a clean gauze wet of alcohol both electrodes and dry them before using the unit again. Check also for a correct parallelism and alignment of the electrodes when they are closed: in case of misalignment adjust them as described on Section 2.
☺ 2. The electrodes alignment could be compromised for strong usage or shock. Align the electrodes.(See the procedure Section 2). The seal time can be too short for two possible reason: the set seal time with trimmer PT3 for the clamp and PT4 for the handgun is wrong or the system is activating its self protection system (moist head, peak signal): clean and dry the electrodes and turn off then turn on the system again.
☺ 3. The breaking of a tubing is quite a rare event but not impossible. If the event has not been caused by wrong actions (e.g. pulling the tube while sealing), it’s better to suspend the use of the sealer and do a weekly maintenance as shown in the Operator Manual.
SECTION 3 TROUBLESHOOTING
Rev. 01 Page 17 of 28
3.3 Frequently Asked Questions 1. How does the sealer work?
Hemoweld-T® uses and concentrates a high thermal energy generated by a radio frequency current source in a small area, in order to melt the polymer of the PVC tubing.
2. Can the sealer damage the cells inside the tube? No, if the instructions of use are respected. When the tube is pinched between the electrodes, the blood inside the tube is pushed from the centre toward the two opposites. In this way a neutral area is created, where practically the tube doesn’t contain anything. It’s in the centre of this area, large about two millimetres, that the energy is concentrated to melt the tube. The time of the energy emission is very small, only few milliseconds. Being the PVC, like all the plastic material, a bad heat conductor and being the emission time very little, there are no possibilities that a significant quantity of heat could pass over the neutral area to damage the cells.
