The driver software associated with FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP is loadedfrom the hard disk upon starting Windows. It controls the commu-nication and data transfer processes, for example the simulta-neous use of both B channels.

FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP supports version 2.0 of the standardized inter-face COMMON-ISDN-API (CAPI). Programs from other manufactur-ers based on CAPI 2.0 can also be used with FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP. ThisCAPI version also allows you to work with CAPI 1.1 applications.

FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP simultaneously processes both channels of aBRI or an ISDN access (2 x 64000 bits/s). Along with the smallsize, the “Plug and Play” functionality is a decisive advantage foryou. It is no longer necessary to consider resources such as the I/O address or interrupts because the operating system performsthe configuration for the card automatically through its Plug andPlay functionality (as in Windows 95 for example). FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CardddddPnPPnPPnPPnPPnP is a PC plug-in card which uses passive technology, i.e. thereis no processor on the card. All computing operations are per-formed by the processor in the PC.

Functions of the driver software

The driver software with CAPI 2.0 processes the D channel proto-cols of the ISDN connection and makes all the requisite B chan-nel protocols (X75, HDLC etc.) available to the applications. Inaddition, CAPI 2.0 offers the SoftCompression X75/V42bis,SoftModem and SoftFax performance features.

The driver software for FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP supports data com-pression as per V.42bis for X.75 connections in accordance withthe CAPI standard. The connection times and costs can be con-siderably reduced when using this type of data compression onaccount of faster transfer rates. Data compression is activated ordeactivated at the request of your ISDN application, e.g. byFFFFFRRRRRITZ!dataITZ!dataITZ!dataITZ!dataITZ!data.

In addition to the digital performance features, you can utilizeanalog services such as Group 3 Fax (CAPI SoftFax G3) and Mo-dem (CAPI SoftModem V32) with FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP.

The current driver software allows you to use FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Carddddd with allCAPI-based Windows fax applications. The controller supportsthe sending and receiving of faxes at a rate of up to 14400 baud.It can be used like a Group 3 fax machine.

FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP additionally offers the CAPI SoftModem perfor-mance feature. On the basis of this modem emulation, it is pos-sible to establish a connection from an ISDN connection to ana-log remote parties which are connected to the telephone net-work via a modem.

Refer to the readme file for further details about the aforementionedperformance features CAPI SoftCompression, CAPI SoftFax and CAPISoftModem.

2.3 Freedom for Your Connection

FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP enables you to establish connections with vari-ous services and remote site. The basic principle for successfulconnections and transfer operations is: The other site must havea terminal device which is either of the same type or is compat-ible.

The current standards are listed in the following:

InternetIn order to dial an Internet Service Provider (ISP) using the Dial-UpNetworking application of Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, youuse the PPP over ISDN protocol (synchronous PPP) with the ISDNAVM CAPI Port Driver or the AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver. For furtherinformation, please refer to Chapter 4 “Into the Internet withFRITZ!Card PnP”. Windows 3.x users are recommended to dial inthrough a 16-bit client of an online service provider. Further infor-mation about settings and applications can be obtained fromyour service provider.

Online servicesIn order to dial online services you require the access softwarefor a service provider. Further information about installation andconfiguration of the application can be obtained from your ser-vice provider.

2.4 FRITZ!Card PnP on the ISDN Connection

When your ISDN connection is installed, your ISDN network op-erator first installs a so-called network terminator (NT). A networkterminator is equipped with two ISDN sockets. Each of these ISDNsockets is an external S0 interface.

IIIIIn most cases, an ISDN PBX with analog extensions is connectedto one ISDN socket and a digital terminal device is connected tothe second ISDN socket. Existing analog terminal equipment suchas telephones, cordless telephones, answering machines andGroup 3 fax machines are connected to the extensions of thePBX. The connected devices are addressed by way of multiplesubscriber numbers (MSN). Each ISDN connection has at leastthree MSNs. If you have connected your PBX to one of the ISDNsockets and your PC containing the FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP to the otherISDN socket, you will require additional ISDN sockets to connectother ISDN terminal equipment such as an ISDN telephone (seegray area in the following Fig. 2).

Fig. 2 Typical Configuration of an ISDN Multiple Connection

There are PBXs which offer digital as well as analog extensions. You can connect ISDN terminal devices to these digital exten-sions. Digital extensions are also known as internal S0 interfaces. They are an alternative connection facility to external S0 inter-faces.

Whether you connect your FRITZ!Card PnP to an internal or external S0

interface - the ISDN terminal device is not the FRITZ!Card PnP but theISDN software on your PC, such as the FRITZ! modules FRITZ!data,FRITZ!fax and FRITZ!vox for example.

All incoming calls from the ISDN are distinguished not only bytheir multiple subscriber number but also by their service indica-tor. No such differentiation takes place for calls coming in fromthe analog network, in which telephone calls and faxes sharethe service indicator “voice”. This is why it is important to specifywhich call is to be accepted with which MSN by which FFFFFRRRRRITZ!ITZ!ITZ!ITZ!ITZ!module or by an ISDN telephone or a PBX. Please refer to theFFFFFRRRRRITZ!ITZ!ITZ!ITZ!ITZ! manual or the FFFFFRRRRRITZ!ITZ!ITZ!ITZ!ITZ! online help for the detailed con-figuration instructions.

Thus, if you wish to receive faxes as well as data with FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CardddddPnPPnPPnPPnPPnP, you do not need to assign different multiple subscriber num-bers to these two applications because FFFFFRRRRRITZ!faxITZ!faxITZ!faxITZ!faxITZ!fax is respon-sible for calls with the “voice” indicator and FFFFFRRRRRITZ!dataITZ!dataITZ!dataITZ!dataITZ!data for callswith the “data” indicator. FFFFFRRRRRITZ!faxITZ!faxITZ!faxITZ!faxITZ!fax and the answering machineFFFFFRRRRRITZ!vITZ!vITZ!vITZ!vITZ!voooooxxxxx both use the same service indicator (“voice”), how-ever.

4 INTO THE INTERNET WITH FRITZ!CARD PNP

In addition to the traditional ISDN services file transfer, fax, video-text etc. based on the ISDN interface COMMON-ISDN-API (CAPI),FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP also supports connections to the Internet.

For connection to the Internet using FFFFFRRRRRITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!CarITZ!Card PnPd PnPd PnPd PnPd PnP, AVM offersyou the following system drivers for Windows 95 and WindowsNT:

• AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driver

• AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver

4.1 Concept of the AVM System Drivers in the MSWindows System

Windows 95 and Windows NT offer two communications modelswith similar functionality: ISDN CAPI Port Driver and NDIS WANCAPI Driver. Both drivers are implemented in VxD technology asWindows system drivers and are addressed through the Dial-UpNetworking application, but utilize different mechanisms and in-terfaces / protocols in the operating system. Basically the sametransfer rates are attained in data communications with the twodrivers. Both drivers can be installed in parallel on one system, ifrequired.

The AVM system drivers make it possible for you to utilize commu-nications programs (such as FRITZ!) via the Windows Dial-Up Net-working application in parallel to CAPI-based ISDN software, forexample for dialing in to the Internet (see functional diagram onpage 11).

4.2 The AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driver

The AAAAAVM IVM IVM IVM IVM ISDN CSDN CSDN CSDN CSDN CAPAPAPAPAPI PI PI PI PI Pororororort Drivt Drivt Drivt Drivt Drivererererer allows programs with a suitableinterface (VCOM ”Modem”) to also use the communications in-terfaces of Windows 95 for ISDN.

When the ISDN CAPI Port Driver is installed, a number of “virtualmodems” which can be accessed by suitable programs are setup in the operating system. These “modems” differ only by virtueof their preconfigured register settings. This means that in addi-tion to Internet connections (modem: AVM ISDN Internet (PPP)),you can also establish connections with BBS systems (hyper-terminal and modem AVM ISDN X.75) or fax machines (MS Ex-change and modem AVM ISDN Fax G3). The special advantage ofthis idea is that the full functional diversity of CAPI continues tobe supported. Thus, both special ISDN applications and also CAPImodems can work simultaneously in the send and receive direc-tions on both B channels.

A full description of the functions of the AVM ISDN CAPI Port Driveralong with detailed installation instructions may be found in the fileCAPIPORT.HLP in the folder WINPORT\CAPIPORT.W95 on the FRITZ!CardCD.

You can define particular subscriber numbers for incoming and outgo-ing calls. In the case of the CAPI Port Drivers, you set these multiplesubscriber numbers by means of AT commands. This setting is per-formed under Start > Settings > Control Panel > Modems > Connec-tions > Settings > Advanced.

Set the subscriber number for outgoing calls by means of ATS49 =<subscriber number> and the subscriber number for incoming calls bymeans of ATS50 = <subscriber number>. Separate multiple entries bymeans of semicolons.

4.3 The AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver

The AAAAAVM NVM NVM NVM NVM NDIDIDIDIDIS S S S S WWWWWAAAAAN CN CN CN CN CAPAPAPAPAPI DrivI DrivI DrivI DrivI Drivererererer permits the integration of op-erating systems Windows 95 and Windows NT and the ISDN.

The AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driver permits the use of Remote AccessServices (RAS) via ISDN. NDIS is the abbreviation for NNNNNetworkDDDDDevice IIIIInterface SSSSSpecification and is a standard for interfacingnetwork cards (hardware) to network protocols (software). NDISWAN is a Microsoft extension of this standard in respect of widearea networking (WAN). The NDIS WAN CAPI Driver for ISDN thuspermits the use of the ISDN controller as a WAN card, in whichcase the ISDN controller is addressed via the COMMON-ISDN-API(CAPI).

A full description of the functions of the AVM NDIS WAN CAPI Driveralong with detailed installation instructions may be found for Windows95 in the file NDIS_95.HLP in the folder WINPORT\NDISWAN.W95 andfor Windows NT in the file NDIS_NT.HLP in the folder WINPORT\NDISWAN.WNT on the FRITZ!Card CD.

4.4 Requirements for Provider or Remote Site

For successful access to the Internet or for RAS connections, yourprovider or the remote site (in the case of RAS connections) shouldprovide digital access and use the same protocol mechanisms asyou.

In particular, the following requirements should be met:

• The provider / remote site must provide ISDN access.

• The access should support the “synchronous PPP” (Point toPoint Protocol) according to Standard RFC 1618 or “PPPasynchronous”.

• Registration with your provider can take place by checkingyour telephone number and/or by PAP/CHAP authentication.

• Optional allocation of a static or dynamic Internet address (IPaddress).

In order to keep your telephone costs low, you are best advisedto look for a provider with a local point of presence.

4.5 ISDN CAPI Port Driver or NDIS WAN CAPI Driver?

The deployment opportunities for the respective driver concept aredescribed in detail in the associated documentation (HLP files).

The following recommendations for use with ISDN and Windowscan be made to start with on the basis of a benefit-oriented com-parison:

• For Internet providers offering PPP over ISDN (“synchronousPPP” according to RFC 1618), both the ISDN CAPI Port Driverand the NDIS WAN CAPI Driver are suitable. You should askyour provider whether the PPP over ISDN protocol is supported.

• In the case of Internet providers not offering PPP over ISDN, itis normally possible to dial in via the CAPI port modem “PPPasynchronous”. With the ISDN CAPI Port Driver, it is alsopossible to support “special solutions” by way of registersettings. You should ask your Internet provider. On account ofthe system design, the NDIS WAN CAPI Driver does not offerthis functionality.

• Both drivers are suitable for access to RAS servers.

• ”Non-Internet applications” such as MS Money 97 or terminalprograms for example can only be used via ISDN CAPI PortDrivers (status as of August 1998).
