IMPORTANT SAFEG UARDS

1. Remove plug f rom the socket outlet when changing needles, feet, or needleplates, or when leaving the machine unattended. This eliminates thepossibil i ty of starting the machine by accidentally pressing the speedcontroller.

2. Before removing the bobbin case, remove plug from the socket outlet.

3. Because of the up and down movement of the needle, you must workcarefully and watch the sewing area when operating the machine.

4. Do not pull the fabric while you are stitching as this may deflect the needle,causing it to break.

5. Before cleaning your machine, remove plug from the socket outlet.

6. Do not attempt to adjust the motor belt. Contact your nearest ServiceCenter should any adjustment be required.

7. Before changing l ight bulb, make sure you have removed plug from socketoutlet. Be sure to replace the face plate which covers the l ight bulb beforeoperating the machine.

The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal which is markedwith the letter N or coloured black. Connecting the MachineThe solid state system assures constant speed as you maintain the same pressure on thecontroller when sewing through various fabric thicknesses.

Unwind the air control hose from foot oper-ated speed controller.

Always be sure air hose is not blocked.Pressing on the controller, you should feel aslight air flow from the hose.

Plug this air hose onto the receptacle abovepower cord, at the right end of the machine.

Then connect the electrical power cord plugto your electrical outlet.

NOTE: When not using the machine,rewind air hose around speed controllerfor storage. as shown.Do not oDerate machine withoutmaterial under the presser foot as this maydamage the feed and the foot.

To turn on machine and sewing light, slidepower switch left to "1" position, To turn ofimachine and light, slide power switch rightto "0" position.

To run the machine, press the speed con'troller. The harder you press, the faster themachine will sew.

To stop the machine from sewing, removepressure from speed controller.

. Raise needle to its highest position byturning hand wheel toward you.

r Push toe of presser foot (1) up, until itsnaps otf the shank (2).

. Take foot otf machine.

. Place new foot under center of shank.r Lower presser foot lifter, fitting shank over

presser fool pin (3).

r Don't turn screw. Instead, push presserfoot screw (4) down firmly until foot snapsinto place.

o Raise needle and presser foot.

o Open slide plate.

o Slide feed cover on top of needle plate,pressing tabs (1) and (2) into holes.

o Close slide plate.

o To remove, open slide plate and littfront edge of cover; pull it away.

Winding a BobbinWinding a bobbin is quick and easy when you follow the directions below. Always wind thebobbin before threading the machine.

r Push in indent ('l) on hand wheel disc, This will stop the needle from moving.

o Place spool of thread on spool pin.

r Slide spool cap (2) firmly over rim of spoolto prevent thread tangling,

o Lead thread from spool and snap into thread guide post (3).

o Wind thread clockwise around front of bobbin winder tension disc (4).

. Passthread end, from inside, through small hole in rim of bobbin.

r Place bobbin on spindle and push it to the right.r Holding thread end, step on speed controller to run machine until desired amount of

thread is wound. (Winding stops automatically once bobbin isfull.)

o Cut thread; push bobbin to the left and remove it from spindle.o Trim thread end from top of bobbin.. Return hand wheel disc to sewing position by pressing on side opposite indent.

lnserting a BobbinTo insert a bobbin, followthe instructions below

. Raise presser foot.

. Turn hand wheel toward you until needleis in its highest position.

. Open slide plate and remove bobbin.

1. Pull 4" (10cm) of thread from replace-ment bobbin and insert bobbin intocase, as shown.

2. Holding bobbin in place, guids threadinto notch (1), and then into notch (2).

3. Draw several inches of thread acrossbobbin.

4. While holding thread on outside, closeslide plate.

o Follow directions for "Raising BobbinThread" on page 13.

Threading the MachineYour sewing machine is easily threaded. Tension discs, guides and take-up leverhave been designed as internal parts, eliminating many extra threading steps. Theclear threading path helps you avoid threading errors.

To thread your machine correctly, simply follow the steps below:

r Raise presser foot lifter.

Raise needle to its highest position by turning hand wheel toward you.

Place spool of thread on spool pin (1).

Slide spool cap (2) firmly over the rim of the spool to prevent thread tangling.

Snap thread into thread guide post (3).

Following arrows, guide thread into auto tension channel (4) down to needle andfirmly pull thread.

Thread needle from front to back.

Raising the Bobbin ThreadOnce the needle has been threaded and the bobbin placed in the bobbin case, the bobbinthread must be brought up through the hole in the needle plate.

1. Hold needlethread with left hand.. Turn hand wheel slowly toward you,

lowering needle into hole in plate.

2. Continue to do this until needle risesabove needle plate.

o Pull gently on needle thread and bringup bobbin thread in a loop.

3. Open loop with fingers to tind end ofbobbin thread.

4. Draw needle thread through left sideopening in presser foot.r Pull both threads to back of machine.

Selecting a PatternThe pattern selector dial is numbered 1trated patterns.

Adjusting T h read Tension

The thread tension on your sewing machine has been pre-set in the auto position to suit mostsewing applications. This auto tension feature eliminates the need for you to adjust thetension lever for the majority of your sewing projects.

Proper tension will produce identicalstitches on both the front and back of vourfabric (1).

Too much tension will produce a tightstitch, causing a puckered seam (2). Adjusttension by moving lever up toward a looser" - " setting.

Too little tension will produce a loosestitch, causing loops in your seams (3).Adjust tension by moving lever down towardat ighter"+"sett ing.

Sewing a SeamYou can sew seams easily and accurately when you follow the suggestions below.

Basting

Pin basting and hand basting are easy waysto make temporary seams before machinesewing.. To pin baste, insert pins at stitching line.

NEVER place pins on the underside offabric in contact with the feed. Do not sewover plns; pull them out as you stitch.

r To hand baste, make long, loose stitchesthat can be easily removed.

Placing Fabric Under Presserfuot

o To place fabric under presser foot, raisepresser foot lifter (1) to its "up" position(2), where it locks in place.

o The lifter can be raised and held in the"extra high" position (3) for bulky fabrics.

Keeping SeamsStraight

To keep seams straight, use one of theguidelines on the needle plate. The mostcommonly used line (1) is extended onto theslide plate. The crosslines (2) serve asguides when stitching square corners.

To turn a square corner, use crosslines onslide plate.

o Line up fabric with extended guidelines onneedle plate and stitch seam, slowingspeed as you approach corner,

o When bottom edge of fabric reaches cor-nering crosslines (2) on slide plate, stopstitching.

o Be sure needle is down in fabric,

o Raise presser foot slightly. Turn fabric,bringing bottom edge in line with guide-line (1).

o Continue stitching seam.

Adjusting Stitch BalanceYou can change the appearance of Special Stitch patterns 11,12 and 13/14, numbered in redon the display panel, byturning the stitch balance ring.

Proper tension produces a smooth, evenstitch (1).

Too much tension will produce a tight stitch(2), causing fabric to pucker. Adjust tensionby moving lever up toward a looser " - "setting.

Zig-Zag Blindstitch #7Blindstitching provides a durable hem finish that can be used on a variety ol differentweight fabrics. Blindstitching trakes a little practice, however, so make a test samplefirst.

Attach blindstitch hem guide

Prepare the hem by folding it andpressing it in the usual way. You maywant to baste the hem to hold it in place,as shown. lf so, be sure to place thebasting at least th inch (12mm) belowthe top edge of the hem allowance.

Wth the wrong side of fabric upper-most, turn the hem under, as shown,creating a softfold from thetop edge ofhem. Pin or baste all three layerstogether in place.

. Cut square patches to desired size.r Turn under 7e" (6mm) around edges of

patch, and press.o Cut a backing to fullsize of finished work.r Baste patches to backing where desired,

being sure all edges line up next to oneanother.

r Stitch lengthwise and crosswise, overlap-ping patches, as shown.

SECTION 5 Four-Step ButtonholingYour machine makes buttonholes in four easy steps.

' You never need to move the fabric orreposition the needle.

. Always make a practice buttonhole on asample of your fabric.

. Be sure bobbin contains enough thread.

. When making buttonholes on hard-to-reach areas convert machine bed to freearm sewing.

. Mark buttonhole position on fabric as indi-cated in pattern.

. When sewing delicate fabrics, place apiece of paper over the fabric whenpositioning the garment. Lower thepresser foot and slip the paper outfrom under the foot. This will preventthe teeth on the underside of the footfrom picking and pull ing the fabric.

. Raise presser foot,

. Place fabric underfoot.

. Center a red guideline (1) of footaround beginning line of buttonhole.

o Select Buttonhole Stitch #1/3.r Position needle in fabric at point (2).o Lower the foot and make sure the slid-

ing portion of the foot is all the way for-ward. Make 4 or 5 stitches ending atpoint (3).

o Raise needle.

SECTION 6 Caring forYour Machine

Removing and Replacing Bobbrn CaseCAUTION: Before c leaning or adjust ingthe machine, remove plug from thesocket outlet.

. Raise presser foot and needle.

. Open slide plate and remove bobbin.

o To remove the bobbin case, the needleolate must be removed first.

. Lift needle plate (1) from right corner andslide out from under foot.

To Remove Bobbin Case

o With a small screwdriver, turn lever (2)back as far as it will go.

r Lift out bobbin case.

To Replace Bobbrn Case

. Guide forked end (3) of bobbin caseunder feed (4).

. Draw rim of bobbin case under positionplate (5).

. Turn lever (2) toward you, locking bobbincase in place,

NOTE: After locking case in place, be sure itis not tight, but can move slightly.

r To replace needle plate, slide it underpin (6) and push it to the left.

o Press needle plate down in place.o Insert bobbin and close slide plate,

you have removed plug from socketoutlet. Be sure to replace the face platewhich covers the l ight bulb beforeoperating the machine.

o This machine is designed to use a 1s-Wattmaximum light bulb.

To change the light bulb, the face plate mustfirst be removed.

. Loosen and remove screw (1).

. Slide face plate down and away fromrnachine,

To Removethe Light Bulb

. Push bulb up into socket (2) and turnto the left to unlock bulb pins.

o Pull bulb down and out of socket.

To Replace the Light Bulb

. Push new bulb up into socket and turnto the right until pins lock into position.

o Reposition face plate by sliding top edgeof plate under edge of top cover.

. Line up screw hole in plate with screwhole in machine.

Cleaningthe Machine

Your machine is designed to give you many years of dependable service. To ensure thisreliability, take a few minutes to keep the machine clean. How often you clean it depends onhow often you use it.

Using the lint brush, remove lint or dustfrom:

-presser oar

-needle bar

-bobbin case (if there is a lot of lint in thisarea, remove the bobbin case forcleaning)

-machine surface (if necessary, dampena soft cloth and use a mild soap to cleanthe surface)

Remove needle plate as instructed andclean exposed area with a lint brush.
