session 12 Wh- questions

Wh- questions son palabras en Inglés que inician con “Wh-” estas son:

 What…?  ¿Qué…?  When…?  ¿Cuándo…?  Where…? ¿Dónde…?  Why…?  ¿Por qué…? How…?

 Wh- + AUXILIAR + I +  verbo en presente…?  youhesheit

 wethey

Por ejemplo:

¿Dónde bailas tú?

 Where do you dance?

8/20/2019 Manual-Practico-de-Ingles-II.pdf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/manual-practico-de-ingles-iipdf 24/75

23

Do/Does no significa nada como auxiliar, es como el joker que nos auxilia parapreguntar y negar. Como verbo, sí significa HACER.

Do se usa con I, YOU, WE, THEY.

Does se usa con: HE, SHE, IT.

CAMBIA A INTERROGATIVO Y A NEGATIVO LOS SIGUIENTESENUNCIADOS:

I live in San Diego.

Questioning in the Past Tense.

A cuérdate que, para preguntar y negar en Inglés, fuera del verbo TO BE y el verbo HAVE significando “haber”, NECESITAMOS QUE NOS AUXILIEN.Es decir, el único auxiliar para pasado es DID. Sigue esta fórmula.

Wh- + AUXILIAR + + VERBO (siempre en tiempo presente)…?Ejemplo, When did you go ?

¿Cobraste $2,000?_________________________________________

Read about “Google History” and make up 10 Questions with its answers.

source: http://www.moovinonup.com/a_brief_history_of_google.html

Google began in 1996 as a project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Larry andSergey were both studying at Stanford University California. In their researchproject they came up with a plan to make a search engine that ranked websitesaccording to the number of other websites that linked to that site (andultimately came up with the Google we have today). Before Google, searchengines had ranked sites simply by the number of times the search termsearched for appeared on the webpage, and the duo set out to make a more"aware" search engine.

The domain google.com was registered on September 14th 1997 and GoogleCorporation was formed a year later in September 1998.

Google started selling advertisements with its keyword searches in 2000, and soGoogle Adwords/Adsense was born. These advertisements used a system basedon the pretence that you only paid for your advertising if some clicked on yourad link – hence the term Pay Per Click (PPC) was born.

The term PageRank was patented in September 2001 –  this term is actuallynamed after co-founder Larry Page and not, as some think, named because it isthe rank of a page (webpage).

Also in 2001 co-founder Larry Page stood down as the CEO of Google andformer CEO of Novel. Eric Schmidt. was appointed as the new CEO of Google.

Google moved its offices to its large Google estate (nicknamed GooglePlex) inMountainview California in 2003, and is still based there today.

In 2004, Google launched its own free web-based email service, known asGmail. This service was made to rival the free online mail services supplied by

Yahoo and Microsoft (hotmail). This new free email service shook up the veryfoundation of free email with its enormous 1 GB of email storage which dwarfedits rivals' ten-fold.

In 2004 Google launched Google Earth. Google Earth is an amazing creation

that is a map of the earth based on satellite imagery. This interactive globe of

68

the world allows you to type in a search for any place in the world and you willautomatically be taken to that part of the world. The cool part is that withGoogle Earth you can zoom right in to street level and actually see your ownstreet and even your house!

An interesting fact in the history of Google is that in September 2005, Googlemade a new partnership with a very interesting company - NASA. This involved building a 1-million square foot research and development centre at NASA's Ames Research Center. This was interestingly followed a few months later bythe launch of Google Mars and Google Moon: two Google maps styleapplications built on pictures of the moon and the planet Mars.

In 2006 Google launched Google Video. Google Video is a cool new search tool. As its title suggests Google video allows you to search the internet for videos. There are thousands of videos to make your search from; from personalhomemade videos to TV shows made by the big television corporations.

In 2006 Google was added to the Oxford English dictionary as a verb – the verb"to Google" has become so popular that Google has even been worried that their

brand name might lose their copyright and patent protections, and allow othercompanies to be able to legally use the Google brand in their own brand.

Today (Article written end of 2006) Google has a dominant controlling share ofthe search market. Google is the most widely used search engine on the internet

with a 54% market share. Yahoo! Is Google's closest rival with 23%, less thanhalf of Google's share, and MSN even falls far short of Yahoo!, lagging far

behind in 3rd place with a 13% market share. If these figures aren't impressive

enough for Google, independent estimates say that more than 80% of searchreferrals come from Google - Google receives about a billion search requests perday –  and with estimates that Google makes 12 cents for every search youperform, you can see that Google corporation is a very lucrative business!

With the many many applications and products that Google has brought out, and the control it has over the internet it ispossible that Google will become a very very influential part of all of lives in

 years to come

session 39Reading about the inventor of e-mails

Read and make up 10 questions with answers.

The First Network Email

Ray Tomlinson

During the summer and autumn of 1971, I was part of a small group ofprogrammers who were developing a time-sharing system called TENEX thatran on Digital PDP-10 computers. We were supporting a larger group workingon natural language. Earlier, I had worked on the Network Control Protocol(NCP) for TENEX and network programs such as an experimental file transferprogram called CPYNET.

I was making improvements to the local inter-user mail program calledSNDMSG. Single-computer electronic mail had existed since at least the early1960's and SNDMSG was an example of that. SNDMSG allowed a user tocompose, address, and send a message to other users' mailboxes.

8/20/2019 Manual-Practico-de-Ingles-II.pdf

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/manual-practico-de-ingles-iipdf 71/75

70

A mailbox was simply a file with a particular name. It's only special property was its protection which only allowed other users to append to the file. That is,they could write more material onto the end of the mailbox, but they couldn'tread or overwrite what was already there. The idea occurred to me that CPYNETcould append material to a mailbox file just as readily as SNDMSG could.

SNDMSG could easily incorporate the code from CPYNET and direct messagesthrough a network connection to remote mailboxes in addition to appendingmessages to local mailbox files.

The missing piece was that the experimental CPYNET protocol had no provisionfor appending to a file; it could just send and receive files. Adding the missingpiece was a no-brainer -- just a minor addition to the protocol. I don't recall theprotocol details, but appending to a file was the same as writing to a file exceptfor the mode in which the file was opened.

Next, the CPYNET code was incorporated into SNDMSG. It remained to provide

a way to distinguish local mail from network mail. I chose to append an at signand the host name to the user's (login) name. I am frequently asked why I chosethe at sign, but the at sign just makes sense. The purpose of the at sign (inEnglish) was to indicate a unit price (for example, 10 items @ $1.95). I used theat sign to indicate that the user was "at" some other host rather than being local.

The first message was sent between two machines that were literally side byside. The only physical connection they had (aside from the floor they sat on)

was through the ARPANET. I sent a number of test messages to myself from onemachine to the other. The test messages were entirely forgettable and I have, therefore, forgotten them. Most likely the first message was QWERTYUIOP or

something similar. When I was satisfied that the program seemed to work, Isent a message to the rest of my group explaining how to send messages overthe network. The first use of network email announced its own existence.

These first messages were sent in late 1971. The next release of TENEX went outin early 1972 and included the version of SNDMSG with network mailcapabilities. The CPYNET protocol was soon replaced with a real file transferprotocol having specific mail handling features. Later, a number of more generalmail protocols were developed.

session 40Reading about the inventor of the ipod

Read and make up 10 questions with its anwers.

Kane Kramer is a serial inventor. His inventions include the technology behindthe MP3 player and Monicall.

He was the first to conceive the idea of downloading music, data and videodown telephone lines in 1979 when he was 23 and patented it with JamesCampbell who was 21.

Together they went on to pioneer digital recording and built the world's firstsolid state digital recorder/players.

Kane's latest invention is Monicall - a system for making conversations intoenforceable and legally binding agreements. Kane is the founder of the BritishInventors Society (BIS), the British Invention Show andorganiser of the British Invention of the Year Awards. www.thebis.org

This is what the first Portable Digital Audio player ever looked like on paper. This is an original drawing by Kane Kramer done in 1979 when he was 23 yearsold.

It shows quite clearly the concept Kane believed would revolutionize the music

industry. The IXI System report and the 1981 patent explains how the wholeidea revolved around distributing music electronically down telephone lines, this was many years before the internet had been invented.

Kane’s Patent also allowed for the downloading of data and software, there isno doubt that were it not for the attempted coup to take over control of thecompany the technology would have emerged earlier.

Despite having come up with this idea way a head of the game and at a time when nobody could quite believe a machine didn't need moving parts, Kanelinked up with technical genius James Campbell and together built the world’s

first solid state audio recorder/player. After years of development andfollowing four prototype models the fifth pre-production model went on sale

at the APRS exhibition at Earls Court - London.Kane was recognised by Apple in 2007 for his inventorship and since has actedas expert consultant.
