Manual of Using Coursera for English Listening

: With an Example

① Go to www.coursera.org and select a course. A course, “Creative problem

solving”, under the course catalog of “Personal development” is selected as an

example. You can choose a course in line with your students’ needs.

② Before enrolling the course, you can check course information such

as expected time to spend, syllabus, how the course works, reviews, and

others.

③ Once you click “Enroll Now”, you can choose either “Purchase course” or “Audit

only”. Select one of them, and click “Continue”.

* This process can be different depending on schools or courses.

④ Now you’re enrolled in the course. Let’s “Start learning”.

⑤ You can see the course sequence and initiate the session from

the week 1.

⑥ Usually, on the left side, you can choose weeks. One the right side,

content is shown.

⑦ Below the screen, you can find the script of the lecture. Using this

script, you can make listening materials. For example, the written script

from 4:19 to 5:24 will be used for demonstration.

⑧ Go to www.lextutor.ca which is a web-based text analysis site. Click

“Cloze” and “2. VocabProfile Clozes (frequency based): English” in order.

⑨ Put the select part of the script in the box.

⑩ Select a band according to English level of your students. You may choose one of

these options: 1) 1k_content (the 1st 1000 most general words); 2) Post 1k; 3) 2k (the 2nd

1000 most general words); 4) Post 2k (Academic Word List and beyond that); or 5)

Post_AWL (special words not included in 1k, 2k, and AWL).

⑪ Check “Number questions?” and “Gaps not menus?”, and click “Submit”.

⑫ You can use the obtained texts with blanks and the list of the

removed words to give your students a dictation activity, which is to

listen to the lecture and fill the blanks.
