J. Course Expiration Policy

Course expiration evaluation will be made taking into consideration the categories of courses that constitute the curricula of the MSN Program. These are: core courses, professional courses, and related courses (see Appendix A for definitions).

1. In core courses the maximum period for expiration is ten (10) years, from the

moment the course is taken. MSN Program Faculty has the discretion to analyze each case on its merits taking into consideration the following criteria.

a. Advanced level courses, in the same subject as the course evaluated

for expiration, that have been approved by the student.

b. If the student has been working or practicing in an environment that entails mastery of the subject of the course evaluated.

c. Courses that have met the time limits can be accepted if the content of the courses has not undergone substantial changes.

2. In professional courses, the maximum period is six (6) years from the year in which the course is approved, except in those cases in which the Faculty specifies that substantial changes have occurred in the subjects. If the student has been working or practicing in a scenario involving the subject matter of a particular course or courses, the Faculty will confirm to the MSN Program Director the professional courses that have expired by time but not have had changes, the director will notify the Dean that will authorize him/her of the process and this must be signed by the Registrar.

3. In related courses a maximum period of up to eight (8) years, as of the time of

approval of the course, will be established. The Faculty will determine which related courses are. Those courses which correspond to other graduate programs will be applied the set time established by that particular Faculty.

Manual of Policies and Academic Procedures of the Master of Science in Nursing Program (MSN) 12

4. The MSN Program Director will inform the Registrar the recommendations for validation of the courses, submitted by the Faculty, according to the format established for that purpose. This recommendation should be made during the first semester of study.

L. Readmission Policy

1. Students who interrupt their studies may request readmission on the deadlines

established in the academic calendar of the Medical Sciences Campus.

2. The application for readmission to the MSN Program will be honored if the student meets the readmission requirements and if there is room for the academic session and availability of the courses in which the student is interested in being reinstated.

3. If changes in the program of studies occur, they will apply to any student who

re-admits the Program and joins a graduating class to which the revised program corresponds.

VIII. GENERAL POLICIES FOR ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

A. Written Papers

1. The written papers will be done according with the guidelines of the Publication

Manual of the Association of Psychology (APA), in its last edition. It is the student's responsibility to purchase the manual. Exceptions, modifications, style and format rules determined by the Faculty of the program precedes the APA Manual. The written papers stipulated as an indispensable requirement for the final evaluation of the courses must be delivered within the limit of time established in the course syllabus. If not delivered within the stipulated period, the student will not approve the course.

2. Exams may be written, oral or online. If the instructor designates a

replacement or replacement examination, the student is responsible for attending the designated day, time, and place. If the student does not appear, he/she must submit an excuse that meets the reasons approved by Certification # 029 with amendment of Certification # 35 (2013-14) of AS-MSC, “Specific rules for excusing and replacing academic activities of students”. (Appendix C).

C. Research Projects

The student will have the responsibility to present the papers corresponding to the research courses in the time agreed with his/her instructor.

D. Texts and Materials

All students are responsible for obtaining textbooks and reference educational materials required for the courses in which they are enrolled.

E. Attendance

1. Attendance at the Medical Sciences Campus is compulsory for all courses. At

the beginning of the course the student will present evidence to the instructor that he or she is properly enrolled for that course. It will be the responsibility of the instructor to verify the program that records the course and corresponding section and record the absence of their students and report it to the Registrar's Office along with the semester grades.

2. When the instructor has not notified that he / she will be late, students should wait fifteen minutes (15) from the official start time of the class.

3. Attendance is required for all educational activities, both theoretical and clinical, planned in each course in which the student is enrolled. All students who are absent from any of the educational activities must discuss their situation with the instructor in charge of the course.

4. The student will be responsible for all matters concerning the educational

activities to which he/she did not attend. IX. ACADEMIC ADVISING

Each instructor will have accessible attention in his / her office or in a place assigned by him / her and will coordinate the available hours for the individual attention of their students. The instructor will send the student an email which informs of the days and hours available for academic counseling. It is imperative that the student take action by issuing a response of the information received. The request for a formal interview with the instructor may originate from the student or the instructor him/herself. Both will agree on the appointment for this purpose.

X. COURSE AND STUDENT ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION

A. Course

In the middle of each semester, the assessment of each course will be held, previous discussion with the students. The instructor will make the necessary changes in the

Page 14: MANUAL OF POLICIES AND ACADEMIC …enfermeria.rcm.upr.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2017/...Manual of Policies and Academic Procedures of the Master of Science in Nursing Program

course and prepare a report that will be given to the Program Director. In addition, the course and instructor will be evaluated by the students at the end of each academic session using the official instrument duly approved for those purposes.

B. Student

1. Each instructor is responsible for preparing, distributing and discussing the

course Syllabus with their students during the first week of class.

2. In each course the student will receive in writing the methods that will be used for the student's evaluation.

3. It is highly recommended that the student seeks tutoring with the instructor.

Through the tutoring process the student can receive orientation and clarify aspects of the academic work or other additional information such as the grades received from them and the evaluation of the course as an essential part of the learning process.

4. If the student does not complete the necessary course requirements in the

specified academic period and presents to the instructor an excuse that is considered justified, the instructor may make the decision to assign the grading of an Incomplete, which he/she will have to remove following the Incomplete removal regulations.

5. In case of deficiency in the academic work, the student and the instructor will
