    Introduction

    Overview

    Main features

OverviewThe TR Music Workstation features Korgs acclaimedHI (Hyp er Integrated) synthesis system.

It contains high-quality preset mu ltisamples/ pro-gram s/ combination s, an effect section, plu s asequen cer, du al polyp hon ic arpeggiator, RPPR, four-

channel audio outpu t, and num erous other functional-ity.

Cont rollers su ch as th e joystick, [SW1] an d [SW2] keys,REALTIME CON TROLS [1][4] kn obs, or conn ectedped als can be used to control lter or effects, allowingyou to m odify the sound in realtime as you perform.Arp eggiator gate or velocity, or the tempo of the arp eg-giator or sequen cer can also be controlled.

In add ition, the optional EXB-SMPL sampli ngupgrade can be installed to add two-channel audioinput and sampling functionality. ( p.35, 88, PGp.260 )

The TR is the ideal mu sic wor kstation for mu sic pro-du ction or live p erformance.

HI (Hyper Integrated) synthesis systemThe HI (Hyper Integrated) synthesis system is a PCMtone gener ator system w ith full digital signal process-ing that gu arantees pristine sound , and features enor-mou s exibility in m usical extensibility, mod ulation, and effect routing.

Tone generator section: 64 MB of preset PCM ROM containing 470

    mu ltisamples and 518 drumsamples.

The sampling frequency is 48 kHz , and themaximum polyphony is 62 voices .

    Filter/ synthesis section: 24 dB/oct Low Pass Resonance type or 12 dB/oct

Low Pass & High Pass type filters can be u sed. Awid e var iety of filter effects can be achieved , fromactive sounds with aggressive resonance to subtletones using a h igh pa ss filter.

A broad range of editing parameters gives youcontrol over every aspect of the sound .

    Effect section: One i nsert effect (stereo-in/s tereo-ou t), two m aster

effe cts (mono-in/stereo-out), and a three-bandmaster EQ (stereo-in/stereo-out) can all be usedsimultan eously. You can select from 89 type s of effect algorithms, and edit them.

Highly flexible effect routing is possible. Effects canalso be routed freely to the individual ou tputs.

Alternate Modulation and Effect Dynamic Modula-tion: The synthesis section (filter etc.) provides Alternate

Modulation functionality , and the effect sectionprovides Effect D ynamic Modu lationfunctionality . This allows you to freely applymod ulation to param eters that affect the pitch, filter, amp , EG, LFO, effects etc.

LFO and delay t ime parameters can besynchronized to MIDI clock/ tempo. You cansynchronize sounds or effects to the tempo of thesequencer or the arp eggiator.

Programs and combinations In the Program mode, the TR provides 512 user

programs, plus 128 program s + 9 drum sets for GMcompatibility. When sh ipped from the factory, it is load ed w ithhigh-quality programs th at cover a wide ran ge of mu sical needs. The 512 user programs can be mod ied by ad justingthe nu merous ed iting p arameters, the effects andthe arpeggiator, to create your own original pro-grams.

The TR provides 24 user drum kits and nine GM2-compa tible ROM d rum kits. With the factorysettings, preset drum kits that cover a variety of mu sical genres are provid ed. You can create yourown original drum kits by assigning a dru msamp leor an original samp led sound to each note of thekeyboard . For each note, you can m ake filter andamp settings, and even route the sound th rougheffects and to a individua l audio outp ut.

The TR provides 384 user combinations. Thefactory settings contain a w ide variety of Preloadcombinations.A combin ation allows you to use layers, splits, orvelocity switches etc. to combine u p to eight p ro-gram s together with effects and two arp eggiators, inorder to create comp lex sound s that could n ot beprodu ced by a program. You can also make settingsthat include external tone generators.

SequencerTR provid es a high -performance 16-track MID Isequencer , with more than sufcient pow er for use as astand -alone sequencer. The sequencer can serve as thecore that brings togeth er TRs nu merou s capabilities, allowing it to serve as an integrated m usic worksta-

    tion.For more on TRs sequen cer ( p.63 ).

RPPRTR features a RPPR (Realtime Pattern Play/Record-ing) function .In Sequen cer mod e, this fun ction allows you to assignpreset patterns or user p atterns (with a specied p lay-back track) to individual keys on the keyboard, andplayback or record that p attern in realtime simp ly bypressing th e assigned key. Nu merous p reset patterns, includ ing patterns ideal for dru m tracks, are built intothe internal m emory.

Dual polyphonic arpeggiator Five preset arpeggio patterns (UP, DOWN, ALT1

ALT2, RAND OM) and 216 user arpegg io pattern sare provided. With the factory settings, thesecontain a wide variety of preset user patterns. In add ition to providing conventional arpeggiatorfunctionality, the polyp hon ic arpeggiator of the TRcan respond to the pitches or timing at wh ich youplay the keyboard, and prod uce a diverse range of chords or p hrases. This can be used to play a varietyof drum phrases (using the Fixed N ote Mode thatis ideal for dru ms), bass ph rases, or guitar an d key-board backing riffs. The arp eggiator is also effectivefor use with subtly moving pad s, synth soun ds, orsoun d effects. In Combination mode, and Sequencer mod e, the TRprovides du al arpeggiators that can simultaneouslyplay tw o arp eggio patterns. You can app ly separatearpeggio patterns to drum and bass programs, oruse keyboa rd sp lits or velocity to switch betw eenarpeggio patterns for an even m ore dynam ic perfor-mance.

4 channel audio output In addition to the L/ MONO and R main stereo

audio outputs , TR provid es two individual audio

outputs , for a total of four chann els of aud iooutpu t. The sound from each oscillator, dru m,timbre/ track, or insertion effect can be rou tedfreely to any outpu t.

EXB-SMPL sampling upgradeThe following functionality can be added by installingthe separately sold EXB-SMPL option.

Sampling mode is added. Input sources from thetwo-channel audio inputs can be sampled andedited to create original multisamples or samples,

wh ich can then be used in a program or drum kit.For details on the featu res of Sam pling m ode, referto p.86.

Two-channel audio input is added. This two-channel audio input allows 48 kHz 16 bit linearmon o/ stereo samp ling. A MIC or LINE level selectswitch an d level adjustment control sup ports awide range of external audio sources, from miclevel to line level. The aud io inpu t can also be routed to th e effects. You can ap ply an effect wh ile samp ling, or use theTR as a 2-in/ 4-out effect processor.

A SCSI connector is added , allowing external SCSIdev ices such as hard disks to be conn ected. Aconnected extern al SCSI device can be used in thesame way as an SD card to save or load d ata.
