I used to doubt whether there is love between my parents. They never act in the romantic ways that I read in books or see on TV, let alone say “I love you” or send flowers to each other. One day when Mom was sewing a quilt I asked her the question, “Is there love between you and Dad?” Mom raised her head with surprise in her eyes. But she didn’t answer immediately, just bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt. When I was in a great embarrassment, Mom said the following words: “Look at this thread. Though most of it disappears in the quilt, the thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. Love to life is like thread to quilt. It can hardly be seen, but it’s really there.” I couldn’t understand her until the next spring when Dad suddenly got seriously sick. Mom helped him walk slowly on the country road every day. With many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees along the road and the sun gently glistening through the leaves, they looked the most harmonious couple. One day when I asked Dad how he was feeling, he said, “I just like walking with your Mom.” Reading his eyes, I saw the deep love. Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience I understand that love is inside, making life strong and warm.

“Soap bubbles” is used to emphasize the brief period of time that puppy loves last.

Metaphor:

1. Love was a magnificent building I had built on the foundation of friendship. It took time to blossom.

“Magnificent building” is used to imply that love should be developed in the same way as we build or construct a building and that, like a building, love should be based on something. “To blossom” is also a metaphor, which implies that love can be as beautiful as a flower but it takes time to have it develop or grow.
