Mansalay lies within the southern part of the province of Oriental Mindoro. This little town, being a home of hundreds of Mangyans has a very rich culture. It is aplace where you will also find a huge range of nurtured biodiversity. Hon. Ildefonso “Joel” Maliwanag is the town’s present Municipal Mayor. His recent projects include the enhancement of Mansalay’s tourist spots and development of the town’s culture. Unravelling its secrets… Sta Catalina de Alexandria is the town’s patron saint. This picture shows us the main church of Mansalay located at Barangay Poblacion. The Hanunuos are fairly tall in structure, and their bodies are slim and well proportioned. They have oblique eyes, flat nose, prominent cheekbone, flat forehead, and olive skin. Men have their custom of sporting a long braided hair in the upper part of their head with the rest of their hair cut short, if not shaved. Women hang up their hair behind their heads, sometimes held in place by a beaded band, which serves as ornament. Mangyans are gentle individuals. They busy themselves by making indigenous products and sell them in the market. This is also the way how they get their money for living. They consider their elders’ wisdom as the highest above them all. They can easily manage to mingle with other people.
