In consideration of urban densification, we will offer more public space to people ... more common areas. We may wonder how we use these areas today. Who uses them ? Is more public space really what citizens expected?

It seems to me that the question directly relates to the one of the personnal development of people in towns. How, now, can people take ownership of their environment and realise it? Must lack of space and intensification inevitably harm gardens, which are an extension of the domestic space and an important part of nature in the city?

If everybody still dreams a priori of, one day, having their own house, with a private garden where they can raise their children and end their days, perhaps there are alternatives to find for Living in the city?

To share stories of the gardens and their gardeners, is to tell stories of their city. Treat each story individually to better perceive their individual and overall values.

It seems clear that creating new urban family gardens will fulfil a real need. It is part of a management strategy to focus on participant populations and their attachment to the land. But we would like above all, to rediscover existing ones. Currently, garden subdivisions are not only isolated but also closed.

If we consider opening the doors of garden areas during the day, we could connect them to the cycle paths and see them as crossing points. This change of point of view about path use can help to reconnect family gardens to their immediate environment, to the urban fabric, and to create a first link between them.

Family gardens are currently located in often remote locations. To make gardens a key element of the city’s identify, we must give them the heritage location they deserve, install them nearer to houses and the touristic city center.The Parc de l’Étoile looks like a promising strategic location. It is at the confluence of the historic city center and the urban development axis «Deux-Rives», in front of the administration building of the CUS.

20 new garden plots could be installed in the park. They would be of a finished and traditional type, and their size would range from 140 to 160 m2. Several paths are now framed by gardens hedges, which give them a private dimension.

At the heart of family garden plots, and of the park itself, an Alders mail marks out a small outdoor living room, which is split in two spaces. On one side, there is a room suitable for a nap, where you can read books left by people who don’t want them anymore.On the other, a games and discussion area. Furniture, and checkerboard tiles arranged as a carpet, will create intimate spaces.

An evolving building book of the project, with its blanc pages and its additions, seemed like a good solution to enable to understand the advancement of things, to know what was left to do, to communicate and subsequently to step back on the methodology employed.

After building a Green and Blue corridor for the CUS, it seemed necessary for the Environment and Urban Ecology department of the city, to weave the finer ecological network by integrating natural elements of the dense urban center.

Certainly, it would be difficult to cut through Strasbourg, as dense as it is, with genuine ecological terrestrial corridors. However, some green continuities exist and spatial targets for biodiversity, benefiting citizens and the city representations, can be fixed.

The aim in the project’s first phase was to develop a methodology to project the emergence of an urban greenway, build its existing mapping, establish a strategy to ensure continuity for wildlife and urban flora, and plan future actions to achieve this goal. All essential methodological steps on which I could take an active part. The project, to be carried by and take into account, the different skills domains on which it influences, was built with the support of the working group ‘Biodiversity’. This team brings together the CUS officers and some members of partner organisations, as part of their duties and skills for a cross reflection.

connections between micro-spacesThe Renaudel square is located in Bordeaux old town, within the neighbourhood of Sainte Croix. Several culture and leisure-dedicated places are spread around it, such as the Théâtre de la Lune and the Bordeaux National Theatre in Aquitaine (TNBA), the Conservatory of music, and many cafés around it. The square surrounds the impressive Sainte Croix church, who’s size is emphasised further by the nighttime lighting.. However, it remains invisible from the streets that lead to it. By creating different micro-spaces, the surrounding frontage contributes to the very peculiar atmosphere of the place. With its range of levels, the new forecourt fits the large contours of the church, becoming a wide relaxation area given back to the population. Each level is laid out with large areas of lawn anyone can appropriate.

La volée de marches de l’éventail s’ac-croche à un muret sur lequel on peut s’asseoir.

Le pavé utilisé est un pavé bou-chardé calcaire, dont la couleur passe du noir, pour le centre d’un cercle, au blanc. Le blance répond aux façades et lie entre eux les dif férents espaces.

These levels are spread around the church and direct one’s gaze toward the different micro spaces around the square. Depending where you stand, gazes might cross. Every circle made of coloured paving stones pinpoints the centre of a specific micro space (forecourt, the conservatory main hall, the cafés’ terraces...) or suggests the way to the church forecourt.

Untie to the harbor

THE HISTORICAL AXIS: CHURCH / OLD TRAIN STATIONLocated on the Arcachon Bay, Audenge has a special charm directly linked to its port, its oyster huts, its tamarisk hedges and polders landscapes. If currently the town appears much as a city to pass through, its location and its connection to the Arcachon bike paths give it a good tourist potential. That’s why act around the city could be relevant. It is important to first understand the city’s charm and its urban identity; Plane trees appear to play a major role.The historical axis Church / Old train station is one of the project’s conductive lines. It is defined from the town center to the harbor entrance, which is not readable at the moment. The major challenge in this area is to make this axis exist again, by giving special attention to Plane trees alignments.

How to create an urban centre integrating its geographical and rural economy landscape?

Looking at Libourne history, we can see that the walled town (called New Town in France as well), which is an urban and commercial centre, assured the agricultural production export by its position in the meanders of the Dordogne river. This new town had a close and indivisible relationship with its own territory which changed especially if we focus on the people’s movements and transport networks. Because of its proximity to Bordeaux and the border it shares with Saint-Emilion, the population of Libourne is growing, which causes management problems. Surrounded by a vineyard territory protected by AOC (Original appellation controlled), it became the only city of this area which can welcome more people. Libourne has concentrated commercial, industrial, and artisanal zones. This phenomenon has increased during the twentieth century, growing at the expense of the city’s relationship with the river, with its vineyard parcels (now few), and with its local productions.In the aim to redraw the Libourne public space, those points will be a base. We have to think of the new city by analogy with the «new town» that is the walled town. We don’t mean here we are going to redraw the city based on an orthogonal plan, but we must find the relationship to the river, rethink a frame that shows the fragmented vineyard parcels and assumes the commercial center, according to the current issues.

_Without knowing the Oleron island, we only have tourist and postcard representations. By distributing disposable cameras with surveys, to steer the residents make pictures, we relied on the residents’ words and images to highlight the uncultivated landscape problem on the island. Wastelands,past practices and changes in activities prints, are a strong landscape characteristic in Oléron. They appear as a challenge to put at the service of a comprehensive revaluation of Oléron territory on each part of the main road.This main road, the backbone of the island, allows you to cross it entirety, and also, showcases its landscapes. It is as well, the first road to enter the cities, so it plays a major role in the first approach and perception of Dolus.A management guide included in the PLU (local urban plan) currently in operation, could permit the reopening of plots for vegetable agriculture and for horses’ grazing. Further, woodlands could be gradually managed ; those by the creation of a property management agent position: owners will be able to earn benefits of their lands by sailing timber or renting their plots.

Water in the Ninh Binh area (called Ha Long Bay on land) could be the link to a multiple identity exacerbating varied heritages. Hoang Long and Day rivers bind the various facets of its landscapes.The water’s role is essential for the province, as in the past being favourable to the city establishment, that for today and the future, considering it is always in the territory representations and that it gathers many challenges in different major fields of activity.

Villages in the north, in the entrance of the future district, are still preserved from the extension of Ninh Binh, and reflect landscapes and traditional activities. Those islands form villages located close to the confluence of Hoang Long Day and Chanh, and activities that we can discover in them, represent a quality for the territory we have to emphasize.

A circuit to discover the landscape’s diversity, water shapes and uses they carry

Rent a bike or go walking if you have time to, to discover landscapes of northern Ninh Binh, where water is omnipresent. Villages are still traditional, and this circuit presents a multitude of atmospheres, of interesting stops, of everyday scenes to discover between water and lush vegetation.

At the mouth of the Chanh River and at the Tan Hoi Hamlets and Bai Tru entrance, a Water House can inventory wealth that water in Ninh Binh represents : in terms of fauna and flora, uses, production, trades that depend on it.

The Water House is located on the small brickyard site : at the crossroad of hamlets, Hoan Long and Chanh rivers. It connects rivers, industrial, agricultural activities and rural life. It could also present temporary exhibitions to raise awareness on the importance of water quality for populations and their environment, being a closed complex system.

Install a few benches and tables on the circuit :to be able to stop in the tree shade and enjoy the cool coming from water

Point out and inform : using a sign system, indicating the way, and with information tables explaining the landscape

Ensure that the entire circuit is practical :maintain the appearance of the material used on little country roads (white concrete slabs or stabilized sand)

Make the circuit possible by bike : set up park cycles at the entrance of suggested stops

Use locks as lookouts to rise above the water and access panoramasRiding on the dike, between the Chang River and water retention lockers, on which breeding and fisheries are possible

Pass above canals, via small wooden bridges Sit at the edge of small irrigation canals, in the shade of a tree, to contemplate the landscape

LA CITE FRUGESIn 1924, Le Corbusier created a garden city at the request of industrialist Henry Frugès (sugar industry) request, to house workers. The project planned for 135 units, but only 50 were built in Pessac. Each of them follows the same design system, which can be defined as a cell: each unit module fits together to provide a new form of housing. Similarly, each building’s elements correspond to a geometric proportions logic.Understanding Corbusier’s logic, allows you to replicate his building plans without knowing the standards, and getting some concepts of architecture and representation during this module.

The triangular Valley of Luz-Saint-Sauveur, is determined by three mountains, whose doorways let in the sunlight. The valley shape gives the town its special light, and allows it to live up to its name.

In the nineteenth century, Napoleon III gave thanks to Luz-Saint-Sauveur by his visits: natural spas were really popular at this time, and Empress Eugenie suffered from poor health. They transformed the view from the house where they used to come to rest, into a true theatrical scene. The opposing side became a walk, with framed views by trees. On each side of the Napoleon bridge leading over the Gave de Pau river, structures evoke the Emperor. These factories are call points in the landscape: a column topped with the imperial eagle, Solferino chapel (restored under order of the Emperor) ... The landscape becomes the transcription of imperial domination, a new type of power.

An identity defined by castles25 km2 to understand the landscape units and their dynamics

Located southwest of Limoges, in the part of the Limousin area where the landscape atmosphere can be described as «park-countryside», the study area consists of an undulating plateau which is lower than 500 metres. It evokes the landscape improvment of English parks by its massive openings on vast green meadows, framed by trees, remains of old discontinuous groves, and by these stretches of mowed grass, maintained by sheep and cattle grazing.The current landscape components are homogeneously distributed across the area ; housing, in particular, more and more dispersed. This is the reason why comprehension of different landscape units is more about the configuration of valleys in ondulation. It began in the Middle Ages, with the need to build castles on hills in order to dominate and control territory. The landscape units then operate as a system, where the boundary of each is defined by relief and cones of views from castles. Today, with the new dynamics, thoses units are no longer legible.

Here two worlds, two elements, two perceptions. A line marking the history of the site, which highlights the ancient surface of a water still underpinned. A horizontal line, induced and traced to regain the strength that water gave to it.
