Wellbeing and Health Officer (WHO)

The title of Welfare Officer has been renamed to Wellbeing and Health Officer (WHO). Our Shed “Dr” WHO is Alan Naber. He is the “WHO to go to” in the Shed when people have concerns for themselves and others.

June 2019 Shed meeting and BBQ

The June 2019 Shed Meeting and BBQ was held on Friday 28th June 2019 commencing at 2.30pm for the meeting and 3.00pm for the BBQ.

Vice Chairman Keith Hayes reported that the Manning Senior Citizens Centre Committee had agreed in principle to our proposal to relocate the Bus Garage to the where the Metal Workshop is currently located and vice versa.

There was some discussion on equipment and tools being left out overnight in the rain and also on the difficulties of operating the router on the router table.

Thanks to Michael Hatsiyiannakis everyone enjoyed a selection of barbequed meats with bread rolls and salad, washed down by suitable beverages.

Annual Subscription Due

Please note that the annual subscription for 2019/2020 is now due.

Julie Mullett representing Edconnect spoke at the General Meeting about the work they do to assist young people in schools. She spoke about the need for more male role models to mentor boys and the positive impact that the mentoring makes to the behaviours and development of young people. She asked us to speak to our friends and acquaintance about the work that Edconnect does and the need for more volunteers.

Edconnect

Edconnect connects older volunteers with young people in schools who need additional support by inspiring older generations to inspire the next. They conduct a programme to recruit, train and support volunteers to work with disadvantaged students who are at risk of not fulfilling their educational potential. Their focus is to improve the lives of students who may fall behind due to social, emotional or academic barriers.

The academic and social support, provided through one-to-one mentoring and classroom learning support, is both a safety net and springboard for young people, who might otherwise struggle, to realise their potential in school and in life. As well as an opportunity to make a difference, volunteers can make new friends, have fun, learn new skills and improve their overall wellbeing.

With carefully screened and trained volunteers providing tailored support to individual students or learning support in the classroom, teachers are able to focus on what they do best – teach. The support of volunteers can help to boost student confidence and self-esteem, improve literacy and numeracy, support class activities, provide a supportive role model, and help student, classes and schools to thrive.

Anyone interested in getting involved with Edconnect should visit their web pages at: www.edconnectaustralia.org.au, call the WA office on 08 9444 8646, or email to [email protected]

July Shed Meeting and BBQ

The July Shed Meeting and BBQ will be held on Friday 26th July commencing at 2.30pm.

Note that the equipment in the shed is not to be used during the Shed Meetings and the BBQ.

Orange Tree Sprouting

We showed last month the orange tree in the garden, which had been given a good pruning in the hope that it would sprout new branches.

We are pleased to report that there are small green sprouts appearing on all of the upper parts of the pruned branches. Please take care when you are near the tree to ensure that the new growth survives.

Friday Afternoon Maintenance

Except for the last Friday of each Month, Friday afternoons are set aside for maintenance of the shed machines. Please note that we do not allow the use of the machines during this period.

We would appreciate Members attending on Friday afternoons to help with this important work which ensures that our machines are in good and safe working order.

Attendance at these seasons is free and beverages are provided at the end of the session.

Current Gold Badge Members

Gold Badge Members are those members of the Shed who are deemed to have a high level of experience and knowledge of the various machines used in the shed. These members are designated to carry out training and assessment of all other members in relation to the machines.

The following active members currently have Gold Badges:

Ron Tompkin Kingsley Waterhouse Bernie Dierks Stephen Finch David Vicary Graeme Hudson Rob Goldfinch Peter Repton Rob Uppill James Turner Roland Prince Victor Singleton Allan Waugh Ross Bedford Mel Taylor Brian Graham

For electrical issues please speak to David Winslade.

If you have not been trained and assessed for a machine or you have any questions about using machines in the shed please speak to one of these members for assistance.

New Entertainment Books

The 2019/2020 Entertainment Books are still available for purchase at a cost of $70 each of which the Shed receives 20% for Shed funds.

The book comes with a Gold Card which is used for the Fine Dining Restaurants listed at the front of the book. The card is also used for new offers which are added during the course of the year and are advised by regular emails to registered book holders. For a majority of the offers savings are achieved by presenting a tear out card.

Savings can be made on purchases at Fine Dining Restaurants, Casual Restaurants, Café and Bistro Dining, Informal Dining and Family Dining Offers, Take Away Offers, Arts, Sports and Attractions Offers, National and Local Shopping Offers, Travel and Leisure Offers, plus Hotel and Resort Offers. Savings can also be made on purchases for Bali Dining and Activity Offers, as well as on Wine Dinners and Special Events. Although the book is primarily for Western Australian offers, the card can be used for many offers that are Australia wide and some which are worldwide.

Note that there is also a phone App available to redeem special offers and to keep track of the value you have received. Leaflets for the Digital Membership are available in the Shed Crib Room.

These books are good value and, if used on a regular basis, the cost of the book can be recovered in a short time.

The books can be purchased by credit/debit card on-line from Entertainment Books at the following link, www.entbook.com.au/9t35098, or by cash at the Shed Coordinators Office (contact Allan Waugh, John Paisley, Rob Goldfinch, or Kingsley Waterhouse).

The Gold Card will need to be registered through the Entertainment Books website before it can be used.

Library

We have retained a small number of useful books which Members can refer to for wood and metal working techniques as well as for project ideas. The books can be found in the crib room in the top shelf above the members computer. Please ensure that you return them tidily to the shelf after use.

Door Closers

New door closers have been fitted to the Crib Room and Co-ordinators Office doors. They are larger and stronger than the previous one that was fitted to the Crib Room door. The doors on these two rooms will now close from the fully open position and cannot be latched with the door fully open. Should anyone require the door to be fully open they should use a door wedge – if you cannot find one make one! Please remove the wedge when you have finished!

The door closer previously on the Crib Room door will be relocated onto the door between the Wood Workshop and the existing bus garage.

Palm Trees for the MSCC Musical

Every year the Manning Senior Citizens Centre choir puts on a musical show. This year the theme is the South Sea islands.

Glenn Rogers has asked us to make two palm trees for the set of the musical. Glenn provided us with a full-sized paper pattern for the trees and provided two large sheets of plywood.

The pattern was in two parts, one for the top part of the tree, the other for the tree trunk. Brett Goodwin has cut out the two trees from the plywood sheets and has assembled the two parts to form the tree. He has also added a piece of thicker timber across the back of the tree tops to enable them to be suspended from the beams in the MSCC Main Hall

In addition, Eric Goddard has produced a rustic style sign post from a short length of pine which will be attached to one of the trees.

Brett Goodwin shapes the leaf fronds on one of the palm trees

Garden Bed Notices for MSCC

The Senior Citizen Centre has had some trouble with people breaking off leaves from some of the produce that they are growing out at the front of the Centre and asked us to make up some signs.

Eric Goddard undertook to make the signs and used offcut timber. The written signs were printed on paper and laminated. They were then stuck onto the sign boards using contact glue.

Farewell to Alex

Alex Melling is a student from Cannington Education support centre who has been attending the Shed on Thursdays.

On Thursday 4th July 2019 Alex finished his time at the Shed and was presented with a special Certificate of Achievement by Brett Goodwin. Alex is a big fan of Star Wars and had made himself a light sabre. The Certificate, recognising Alex as a Master Light Sabre Maker, was signed by Darth Vader!

125 Done 375 To Go

John Paisley can regularly be seen in the bus garage assembling a variety of walking frames. Normally he is able to manage them himself but for a recent consignment he required a bit of help.

500 frames need to be assembled over a 3 to 4 weeks period (about 150 on three days) per week. John has been assisted by over 10 Shed Members. Our photo shows David Vicary and Graeme Hudson helping John to assemble a consignment.

Allan’s Global Reach

Allan Waugh continues his “Japanese Period” with a number of items which demonstrate the global reach of the Shed activities.

In May 2019 Allan attended a two-day one-to-one workshop at Burleigh Heads in Queensland on making Kumiko panels where he was tutored by an experienced Japan trained tutor.

Allan also presented a Kumiko table lamp, in flat pack form, to his second cousin from California

Rob told us that he should have joined the Shed ages ago as he really enjoys coming because everyone is so friendly and helpful and we have a good selection of useful machines and tools.

History in the Shed

New Shed Member Mike Harrison has been restoring an old Florentine 3-seater which is part of a suite which includes a throne chair.

Mike’s grandmother bought it in the early 1920‘s when John Forrest House (The Bungalow) in Perth City was cleared out.

Health and Safety

Machine Safety Training Sessions

A comprehensive Training Programme for Machine Safety Training programme for members has been developed by David Vicary.

We are continuing the machine safety training programme for members who wish to understand how to safely operate machinery within the shed.

Training will include basic and advanced tuition so that member operators may gain optimum skills within their own capacity & the capacity of each machine.

The training will be interactive with each person, after tuition, personally operating each machine under supervision, so maximum competence and confidence may be achieved.

Importantly dangerous operations will be explained as well as minimum maximum capacities. Specialty methods where applicable will also be covered.

Training, which started on 10th June 2019, is under the control of our most competent and experienced members.

Shed Members will be notified of future training dates and times and booking schedules will be placed in the Crib Room.

Reminders will be emailed and where possible will be placed in the monthly newsletter and there will be a follow up reminder mid-week of the coming Monday, detailing which machine(s) will be demonstrated.

The programme will include all machinery, but with an initial priority on those items considered most likely to cause personal injury. Training will include demonstrations of capacity and potential uses of each machine while ensuring optimum safety.

Numbers at each session will be limited and will be on a first come first served basis – remember to use the booking schedule in the crib room and nominate a preferred date.

Following a competency assessment on each machine, each trainee, having satisfied the trainer, will be deemed competent to individually operate that machine. Certificates will be issued on completion of each session stating the machine used and the members attendance.

Note that those members who have not received training on a required machine, must, when wishing to use that machine, seek the supervision of a gold card member who has achieved operator competence on that machine.

New Makita Router/Trimmer

A new Makita RT0700C Router Trimmer has just been purchased. It comes complete with a carry case which also contains the router guides, some router cutting bits, the dust extraction fitting, and two spanners for changing the cutting bit.

The Makita RT0700C Hand Held Router Trimmer

The small hand held Router Trimmer is primarily designed for trimming the edges of jobs like bread boards, cutting boards, and picnic tables. It is kept in Bay 8 of the compactus with the other boxed hand tools.

Please note that Members must have received appropriate training and assessment by an approved Gold Badge Member before they can use the Router Trimmer.

Please ensure that after use, the router trimmer and all the accessories are placed back into the carry case which should be returned to the correct place in the compactus.

Borrowing Tools

Members are reminded that if they wish to borrow tools from the Shed, they must complete the details of the tools and the date taken in the Loan Book hanging in the Coordinators Office.

Unless it has been specifically agreed with the Shed Coordinator that a tool can be borrowed for a longer period, it should be returned the next day and the Loan Book should be completed with the return date.
