Slum is a run down area of a city characterized by Sub standard housing and lacks tenure security.
Slums are usually characterized by urban decay, high rates of poverty and Unemployment.
They are commonly seen as “Breeding grounds” for social problems such as crime, drug addiction , alcoholism , mental illness and suicide.

This area was used as Garbage dumping ground and open toilet until 1970’s.
Construction work for slum tenements was initiated in the year 1970 and completed in the year 1974.
Developed as a Housing Colony for Corporation Sanitary Workers.
This area is divided into . Manjalmedu-Indra nagar . Manjalmedu-Mini colony . Manjalmedu-Poonga

There are 39 Apartments –each with 4 houses. 4 families in each block. There are totally 144 houses in 4 streets. Mini Colony has 9 blocks – 36 houses. Later alterations and constructions were
made to accommodate new family members. Hence now there are 8 families in each block. Houses for rent is also available but only for
relatives at Rs.300-500/month.

Each block has 2 portions in the ground floor and 2 in the first floor.
Each portion consists of a hall, kitchen, bathroom and toilet.

Workers and Scavengers. Washermen A very few other govt. employees.

houses.

Educational facilities are very poor. No school functions inside the slum. Only10 % of the children passed 10th standard. No library facilities available. An Anganvadi (Children centre) is functioning in
the slum.

There are two SHG s (Self Help Groups)functioning in the slum.
They are not involved in any production activities.
They collect monthly subscriptions and circulate the money as Micro loans.

Drinking Water is supplied on alternative days.
Every Street has 2 motor pump sets and Sintex tanks which provides water for daily use.

Roads are in very poor condition. Open ditches are frequent. Some roads have been removed for
underground drainage and yet to be laid.

Dalit Panthers is the dominant political party in this area.
D.M.K has won in the Local body elections. Political parties have organized a tuition
center for the children. But now this center does not function
because of political reasons.

There are no shops inside the slum. People buy groceries in shops near by
Arapalayam. Only 3 petty shops selling eatables for kids is
available.

One ration shop is located inside the slum. Other 2 shops are located outside the slum. These shops cater the needs of people living
inside and also outside the slum. People accuse political influence in running
these shops

Rice is the staple food of this area. Usually rice is bought from the ration shops. Quality depends on price and the people
prefer to buy rice at bulk quantities.

Sri Kaliyamman is the principal deity of this area.
Another 2 small temples are located inside the slum.
Hindus are dominant in this area.

St. Joseph- a Catholic church is located very near to the slum.
Church of Christ- a Pentecostal missionary is located inside the slum.

Celebrated once in a year – in the month of September (Avani).
Other festivals include –Pongal,Diwali,and Vinayagar Chaturti.

Free color TV is present in almost all homes with cable connection.
Many theatres are located in this area. Mathi theartre Guru theartre Solamalai theatre• Tea shops and petty shops are the usual
meeting places.

Very low literacy rate. Unhygienic environment and surroundings. Open drainage – which becomes breeding
place for mosquitoes. Unauthorized slaughter houses- main
reason for garbage accumulation. Lack of unity among the people due to
political affiliation. Money lenders- reason for poor economic
condition in this area.

Only by providing educational facilities, slums can be developed.
Political awareness among people is necessary to demand their needs.
Education on leading a hygienic life can be provided.
People should work to improve their quality of living and leave their political ideologies behind.
