Manifesto-Amritanshu Singh -A pronouncement of everything that I would like to improve in IIM Calcutta given a chance

About me: I have completed my graduation in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Patna, in 2014, after which I have worked at Bank of America as Senior Technical Associate. I come from Uttarakhand, but I have spent the most part of my life at Lucknow, studying from the prestigious City Montessori School. Things I have done in the past: I have served as the Secretary for Literary affairs for an year at my graduation college, which is IIT Patna. I also organized many events at our annual techno-cultural fest Anwesha and was involved in the conception of some of those like Mr. And Miss Anwesha and Wall Painting. Things I would like to bring up and change, being/or not being a part of SAC:1- A drone for delivering eatables to students in their respective hostels: The drones could be gotten at a low cost on a trial basis, or could be sponsored. Either ways, the cost would not even be near the costs of the concrete path mentioned before. As such, this serves the purpose of making us at Joka comfortable. We could start by using a centralized fleet of drones, who pick orders from different shops around the campus, and deliver the stuff to us students, as well as to the faculty quarters and other residents of the campus. 2- A concrete path between the Auditorium to New Academic Block: Though the cost of the almost 750 metres-long path is extremely high due to the presence of lake right under the path, it is still something sorely desired, and can be one of the top agendas to be discussed with the college management.3- Utilization of the lakes: A floating restaurant would be an experience to remember for an outsider, and a good place to enjoy a meal for us Jokars. We could get McDonalds or Dominos or any other well-known brands for this purpose, and share the costs. We might not even have to do that considering how eager some of them would be to come here.4- Cleaning the lakes: The lakes are not very clean presently at Joka. We could set up fountains in those, so that the water keeps circulating, avoiding stagnancy. Also, we could get the lakes cleaned, and even show support to Swacchh Bharat Abhiyan in our own way.5- Class lectures to be recorded and/or streamed live: Sometimes in the extremely hectic place that is IIM Joka, it is difficult for people to attend classes. The reasons for which might be involvement in group activities, external projects, extra-curricular activities. So, a step towards avoiding such instances would be the recording of lectures, so that the student can watch them later on the Intranet. Also, live streaming could be very useful in rainy times, or for people who have suddenly developed a temporary disability(a fracture in a foot, for example).6- Smoking zones inside the campus: Instead of all the smokers having to go out constantly or resorting to sneaky methods, we could have designated smoking zones inside the campus, where people could smoke. That could further strengthen the culture of trust we have at IIM Joka. And if the HRD ministry directives still do hinder the creation of these smoking zones, we could create a floating smoking zone, making use of the lakes as stated in a previous point.7- Leasing/renting bicycles in the campus: We could introduce leasing bicycles at low cost or providing them for hire, preferably some company sponsoring a portion in the expenses involved. This is a viable and achievable option, because of the low costs involved. We could also keep a track of these bicycles using a GPS mechanism installed in the same.8- Introduction of e-rickshaws: We can also introduce e-rickshaws in the campus. They can be a viable and cheap option for people to commute around the campus. Online booking could be introduced for them as well. Also, roads could be widened if needed for them.9- Unused area in and around Tagore Hall: The area next to the mess, a huge area in itself, is entirely unused. The area could be used for many activities like a badminton or a squash court, and/or a spacious common rest room. We can also incorporate green carpeting (artificial grass) on top of the mess. 10- Poker zones: A poker zone could be implemented in some area, with strict rules regarding involvement of money and gambling. Or, even better, the poker area could be incorporated along with the floating restaurant, like a floating casino, like in Goa. It could go a long way towards understanding Game Theory also.11- Mess in Ramanujan Hostel- Though one of the best in terms of food out of all the messes in the campus, what the mess lags behind is in hygiene. A revamp of the mess room would be a viable step, considering than a significant portion of our relatively less free time at Joka is when we eat. 12- Introducing AC rooms in hostels: As is well-known, the PGP students currently do not reside in AC rooms. And considering how invigorating the Kolkata heat gets during the third trimesters in an academic session, it is viable to expect the inception of such facilities. Looking at the hefty fees we pay at IIM Calcutta, the interested students could pay a little more for the sake of comfort in the form of AC. Therefore, introduction of optional AC rooms is an idea we would definitely like to take forward.13- Facilities in NH: We could use an elevator in New Hostel considering the four-floor structure. Also, the plumbing and electrical system there is a cause of concern among the students, which can be rectified by talking to the management.
