The Condux Manhole Cover and Grate Remover is designed for removing man-hole covers and grates safely and easily. The Manhole Cover and Grate Removeris an extended length tool that uses leverage to remove manhole covers, catchbasins, and sewer grates without causing knee or back injury. It is portable andoffers single person operation.

The Condux Manhole Cover and Grate Remover has different attachments for thevarious size and style of manhole covers. The Manhole Cover and Grate Removeralso replaces the cover, eliminating the need for cover repositioning.

A. WORK AREA SAFETY

1. Wear personal protective equipment: hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes,and leather work gloves.

2. The safe operation of this equipment requires that the operators be on stablefooting.

3. The safe operation of this equipment requires that the tool be on levelground.

4. Use proper manhole safety operations such as gas testing, etc. after themanhole cover has been removed.

5. Ensure that area is clear of people / obstacles before removing lid.

6. Be aware of potential traffic hazards, etc. Use standard safetyequipment and procedures for traffic control.

7. Use proper procedure when pushing and turning tool.

8. Do not use this tool for anything other than its intended use. Do not jump, sit,or lean on this tool.

Set Up the Manhole Cover &Grate Remover1. Unhook the strap from the remover.

CAUTION! Legs will fall out. Ensure that hands are not in joints.Personal injury could occur.

2. Place the legs down in a tripod position on a level surface. Two legs should benear the manhole with the third leg back under the handle.

CAUTION! Tripod must be placed on level ground. Tipping could occuron unstable ground.

3. Measure approximate size of manhole. Heavier manhole covers or grates willrequire the use of the handle extension for added leverage. For additonalleverage with heavy manholes, adjust the location of the tripod by moving thepin forward for more leverage or backwards for less (see Figure1).

4. Pull handle out to full extension length. Remove the handle and place theextension bar in between the remover and handle (when needed) by insertingthe stepped end of the extension into the handle. Replace handle ontoextension.

5. Refer to next section for attachment selection and continued use of theremover.

Attachment SelectionCENTER HOLE ATTACHMENTUse the Center Hole Attachment on manhole covers that have a center opening(see Figure 3).

Place the Center Hole Attachment in the manhole opening (see Figure 3). Placethe attachment on the remover by setting the base inside the end of the lifter(see Figure 4).

EDGE HOLE COVER CHAIN ATTACHMENTUse the Edge Hole Cover Chain on large sewer grates or manhole covers(see Figure 5).

Place the Edge Hole Cover Chain hooks in the manhole opening (see Figure 5).Place the attachment on the remover by placing the center links of the attachmentin the remover (see Figures 6 and 7).

CAUTION: Do not use the remover if the attachment is offcenter.Tipping or personal injury could occur (see Figure 7).

CONCEALED PICK HOLE ATTACHMENTUse the Concealed Pick Hole Attachment on manhole covers where the concealedpick holes are on the outer edge of the cover (see Figure 8).

Place the Concealed Pick Hole Attachment in the manhole opening (see Figure 8).Place the attachment on the remover by setting the base inside the end of the lifter(see Figure 9).

TWO HOLE ATTACHMENTUse the Two Hole Attachment on manhole covers with concealed pick holeslocated away from the edge and closer to the center (see Figure 10).

Place the Two Hole Attachment in the manhole opening (see Figure 10). Place theattachment on the remover by setting the base inside the end of the lifter(see Figure 11).

OPEN GRATE ATTACHMENTUse the Open Grate Attachments on slotted sewer grates or grated manholecovers (see Figure 12). For larger grates or covers, use the Edge Hole CoverChain listed below.

Place the Open Grate Attachment in the manhole opening (see Figure 12). Placethe attachment on the remover by setting the base inside the end of the lifter(see Figure 13).

Operating Instructions1. After attachment has been selected, use a chisel to clean out the holes in the

manhole (see Figure 14).

2. Pound around the edges of the manhole with a small mallet to loosen themanhole cover or grate.

3. Place the selected attachment on the remover as directed in the AttachmentSelection.

4. For curbside grate removal, the remover’s back leg (under the handle) shouldbe approximately 4" (102 mm) off of the ground to prevent the grate coverfrom hitting the curb (see Figure 15).

CAUTION! Be aware of obstacles and people in the area when operatingremover.

5. Push down on the handle of the remover and rotate in the direction that themanhole cover is to be placed (see Figure 16). If the manhole cover beginsto tip, replace it and adjust the tripod slightly closer or further from themanhole for better placement.

6. If the remover is too high or low for sufficient leverage, adjust the heightof the remover by turning the legs clockwise for more height orcounterclockwise for less (see Figure 17).

7. Slowly lower the manhole cover down (see Figure 18).

8. If the remover must be moved due to traffic / pedestrians, obstruction, etc.draw chalk lines on the ground around the feet of the tripod for accuratereplacement of the manhole cover remover (see Figure 19).

9. Reset the remover to the chalked lines if the remover was moved. Replacethe manhole cover by pushing the handle back down rotating back to thedirection of the manhole. If the manhole does not set back into the manholesmoothly, adjust the tripod in the opposite direction of the offset of themanhole.

10. Follow tear-down procedures to disassemble the Condux Manhole Cover andGrate Remover.

Tear Down Procedure1. Remove Manhole Cover and Grate Remover from attachment.

2. Remove the selected attachment from manhole cover or sewer grate.

3. Remove extension arm (when applicable).

4. Push handle in as far as it will go. The handle should snap into the balldetents in the remover to lock it in place.

5. Pick up remover and fold in legs. To replace legs accurately, the adjustmentpin should be in the top hole.

CAUTION! Use caution when folding in legs of remover. Pinch pointscould cause personal injury. Wear proper safety equipment.

Warranty InformationA. FACTORY ASSISTANCE

Condux International can provide further advice regarding any problems with theinstallation, service, assembly, or disassembly of the Manhole Cover and GrateRemover. Call toll free at 1-800-533-2077 (USA and Canada) or 1-507-387-6576and ask for assistance. The Manhole Cover and Grate Remover can be returnedto the factory at any time for service or repair; however, a Return MaterialAuthorization (RMA) must be obtained from Condux before shipping. Condux willnot accept returned items without an RMA.

B. LIMITED WARRANTY

Condux International, Inc. extends the following warranty to the original purchaserof these goods for use, subject to the qualifications indicated: ConduxInternational, Incorporated warrants to the original purchaser for use that thegoods or any component thereof manufactured by Condux International will befree from defects in workmanship for the period of one year from the date ofpurchase, provided such goods are installed, maintained, and used in accordancewith Condux’s written instructions.

Components not manufactured by Condux International, but used within theassembly provided by Condux International, are subject to the warranty period asspecified by the individual manufacturer of said component, provided such goodsare installed, maintained, and used in accordance with Condux’s and the originalmanufacturer’s written instructions.

Condux’s sole liability and the purchaser’s sole remedy for a failure of goods underthis limited warranty, and for any and all claims arising out of the purchase and useof the goods, shall be limited to the repair and replacement of the goods that donot conform to this warranty.

To obtain repair or replacement service under the limited warranty, the purchasermust contact the factory for a Return Material Authorization (RMA). Onceobtained, send the RMA along with the defective part or goods, transportationprepaid, to: Condux International, Inc.
