Fiction Book Pick

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

In this engaging family saga, Lee follows the lives of three generations of Koreans from a small village in Busan in the early 1900s, to an impoverished ghetto in Japan. As the characters struggle with their identities in a country that shuns them, they attempt to find meaning through each other.

Nonfiction Book Pick

Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther

A poignant, classic memoir that highlights the endearing, curious nature of the author’s son, who died of a brain tumor. Though the subject seems morbid, Gunther’s writing is exquisite and manages to make a devastating topic beautiful, while bringing to life New York in the 1940s.

Tenth grader Kate Barcia loved Turtles All The Way Down by John Green. “I liked how he used the perspective of

his own anxieties to write from the character’s

perspective.”
