”Mango Hill” back on the Bruce

When back in early 2012, the sign indicating “Mango

Hill” disappeared from the Bruce Highway, concern was expressed by many that southbound drivers would find themselves at Bald Hills if they missed Exit 133 to Mango Hill and North Lakes.

As such, the Progress Association wrote to our State

Member Reg Gulley who made representations to the Minister for Main Roads. After a number of enquiries and many months, the Minister advised that the original sign had been demolished in an accident but would be replaced by Christmas. Thankfully, this has occurred and residents are delighted to see the sign back.

The Mango Hill Progress Association appreciates the

support of Reg Gulley as our newly elected State Member for following through on this and a number of other issues put forward by the Association.

Neighbours rally to Jenny after Storm

On Australia Day 2013, with the wind from ex

Cyclone Oswald brought down numerous tree limbs around the house and pushed over the side fence, Jenny Topp of Alice Street was a little circumspect as to how to clear up her littered back and front yards.

However, the Aussie spirit of helping neighbours

was close by as neighbours, Mark, Grant and Peter moved in with their trailers and the bulk of the green litter was on its way to the Dakabin Tip within days. (cont. Page 5)

community in the past month and encourages everyone to enjoy the quiet lifestyle offered by this wonderful community and its residents. Everyone is welcome to attend the Progress Association meetings and we encourage your active communication should you wish to do so. Transport Minister

Responds to Submission

The Mango Hill Progress Association has

received a response from Steve Minniken, (A/Minister for Public Transport) following our meeting with him and State Member Reg Gulley on 8th November on bus transport in the local area.

The A/Mininister has thanked the Association

for its submissions on various issues and advises that: “The A/Minister is pleased to advise that the suggestions in your submission about bus routes 681 and 682 have been considered as part of the south-east Queenlsnd bus network review currently underway. Currently Translink is considering a number of changes to these routes including the provision of improved morning and afternoon weekday services to and from Petrie rail station that may benefit residents in Freshwater Estate and the Mango Hill area”

A copy of our previous submissions to

Translink in 2011 & 2012 has also been forwarded to the Minister for his consideration.

The Association appreciates the efforts of our

State Member, Reg Gulley in facilitating this meeting with the minister and will be following up with Reg on our strong recommendtions for park and ride facilities near the new Bus Station in North Lakes.

Park Vista Connected to NBN

As outlined in the November issue of the Mango

Hill News, Mr Ryan Williams ( NBN Co) made a presentation to the Novmember meeting of the Progresss Association on the roll out of the NBN.

Ryan advised that the general Mango Hill

community (along with North Lakes) was included in the current 3 year plan to roll out the NBN and he expected that Mango Hill will be connected within 12 months, although this could not be guaranteed. .

However, given their status as a “greenfield

estate” and a lack of “copper line” telephone connection, the Park Vista Community would be connected to the NBN in late December 2012 and new Progresss Association member, Josh Pitman has emailed as below.

For many this will be a great outcome as there

are so many that do not have reliable internet connections and the sooner the remainder of households are connected the better

From: Josh Pitman Sent: Wednesday, 23 January 2013 9:03 PM To: Laurence Subject: NBN

Hi Laurence, Just a quick note to let you know that

Park Vista is live on the NBN now, so we finally have real internet and phone lines! Josh Pitman

Additonal Post Box possible on Halpine Drive

Mango Hill Following our meeting with Senator

Conroy in November, a letter has been received from Senator Conroy’s office advising that consideration is being given to the location of a Post Box on Halpine Drive near the junction of Anzac Ave. Whilst no guarantee is given, there is cautious optimism that residents on the southern side of Mango Hill will at last get a post-box.

Tennis Court upgrade Waits for end of Wet season

With a grant of $10,072 from the Moreton Bay

Regional Council, the Progresss Association will upgrade the surface of the Mango Hill Tennis Court as soon as practical this year, but after the normal wet season. Under the terms of the grant, the Association will fund 25% of the total project cost along with Council’s contribution for which the Association is very grateful.

The children of our community are privileged to

have a number of dedicated coaches who come to Mango Hill on most days after school to encourage them to learn the skills and values of the game of tennis. This upgrade will benefit our kids and all who use the court.

Association Website expands

http://www.mangohillprogress.org/main.htm

The Progress Association website is now

operational and whilst there is still much to do, it is already providing a service beyond the levels of our paper based communications in previous years.

Village resident, Josh Hood of Start Marketing is

working on a volunteer basis to develop the site more fully and your patience is requested as the site is improved. Readers are welcome to provide their ideas for further enhancements of the site over coming months.

However, for those who appreciate the ability to

read the printed paper version, you can be confident that there is every intention that Village residents will continue to receive the Mango Hill News in their letter box.

Over the past 4 years Yvette has given much support to the activities of the Mango Hill Progress Association and has been a regular attendee at Association meetings, facilitating Guest Speakers on a range of issues including, NBN and Moreton Bay Rail Link.

2012/13 - was a great start on the Moreton Bay Rail Link with Kinsellas Road East overpass commenced and well underway. With the tender for the track lines to be let later in 2013, it is expected that work on the tracks will also commence in 2013. Top marks.

2012 – NBN – Mango Hill and North Lakes residents are on current plans, to be connected in 2013 or 2014. Speeding this up will be of great benefit to our communities.

2013 – Review of additional Post Boxes underway. Australia Post needs to be more aware of a growing community needs and more than one post-box is required.

2013 >> A Centrelink/Medicare Hub at North Lakes is essential for the expanding numbers of clients in the surrounding community who currently have to travel to an already overcrowded and largely in accessible office at Redcliffe.

Since being newly elected as State Member in March 2012, Reg has developed a strong working relationship with the Mango Hill Progress Association both as Patron and local member and shown great empathy with issues raised by the Association.

2012 - Reg has facilitated meetings with A/Minister for Transport, Steve Minniken re Bus improvements in Mango Hill and North Lakes (see this issue). A good start and the Association will continue to work with Reg on outcomes including a “Park and Ride” at the new bus station in North Lakes

2013 – Additional signage to highlight existence of Mango Hill on Bruce Highway

2013 - Outstanding issue of state of bitumen and line marking on Anzac Ave lane onto the southbound ramp of the Bruce Highway.

2013 – ensuring ongoing funding of the Moreton Bay Rail Link – see Federal issues above.

Now in her 3rd Term as Councillor for this community, Julie continues to work well with the Association to meet the sometimes diverse demands of existing and expanding developments which is never an easy task. 2012 was a very positive year for Mango Hill with many issues being addressed and a number of goals yet to be achieved

2012 - Danzy Buchanan Park Playground/shelters and pathways completed and proving extremely popular with Village and external visitors alike. The park is very well used.

2012 – Kinsellas Road West (west side) footpath re-installed, with road line marking following community representations.

2012/13 - Kinsellas Road West – planning in place for extension of kerbing and channelling from Park Vista drive Round-about to Muriel St and beyond. (an extension of the Village drainage and kerbing program commenced in 2010 in John St)

2013/14 - Consideration of ongoing need for capital work program for Community Hall. The Association has placed additional room and storage high on our “needs” list for some years.

2013/14 - Commencement of master-plan for Halpine Lake surrounds for community facilities that will include walking paths, shelters and BBQ’s etc.

2013 – Village Entry Sign for Mango Hill Village

Whilst the primary role of Progress Association is to lobby for improvements in our local environment, we achieve the best results by seeking to work in a cooperative and consistent manner with all levels of government and local business/community groups wherever possible. Thank you to Yvette, Reg and Julie for your willingness to work with this Association.

CLEANING UP AFTER OSWALD Jenny Topp says “Thank you”

My beloved Liquid Amber tree which stands on Alice Street suffered severe damage on the night of 27th January. While the house itself was still intact, the sight of all those branches in my front yard as well as 2 trees at back of house and a fence, was almost too much to bear for a lady on a disability pension to cope with. However, enter Grant and Mark from Alice Street who became the heroes, along with Peter from Ruby Street. These men just moved in with chain saws and ladders, not only cutting up the debris but also helping Tracey across the road that also had a fallen tree. All packed onto a trailer and off to the dump in a matter of hours. The title of "town clown's" was given by Grant at the mention of this story being written. They are humble men who didn't want to be acknowledged. But to me and Tracey they are wonderful neighbours and heroes and one good reason why we have chosen to live in our little village.

Cheers (Jenny Topp)

Volunteers Clean Up Courts

When the waters swept through Danzy Buchanan Park on the Australia Day weekend it scuttled Skate Night and dumped a “ton” of debris from the playground over the two courts. With Skate night then postponed to 9th Feb, the race was on to clean up return

the courts to an acceptable state.

Sincere thanks go to the Mary Street families, (Lyn, Jade and Jonathon Kubler) and Brendan, Haley and Sam Fergus) who pitched in despite the mozzies to help me have the courts back on the weekend after the flooding.

Guys, it was a fantastic effort and certainly proved the value of community spirit that is well and truly alive in the Mango Hill Community. Within a few hours after your great work, folk from everywhere were on the courts “shooting ball” and serving a volley or two. I only wonder if they knew of your efforts!

“Santa’s Helper” on the mend.

Marty leaves Hospital (at last) after bumpy landing at Mango Hill Christmas Tree

When Marty Miller of Rothwell was offered the opportunity to assist

Santa at the Mango Hill Christmas Tree he did not hesitate to accept. Whilst that decision was in itself to prove to have unfortunate consequences when he suffered a broken pelvis and other injuries as he came into land in front of some 2000 spectators, Marty in his own words, has been counting his blessings.

“I have so many people to thank for their good wishes, visits and support over the past two months that I will never forget them.”, Marty commented. “After 30 years, I have made my last jump but will always remember the wonderful experiences that Skydiving has given me. I wish to sincerely thank all who supported me during the past few months and for the donations made at the Mango Hill Christmas Tree. I will be going home on Monday (18th Feb) and wish to thank the wonderful staff here at Redcliffe Hospital and also at Royal Brisbane Hospital where I have spent the past two months being cared for.”

Above: Marty accepts a donation of $500 from Paris and Jasmine Teasdale which was donated by families attending the Mango Hill Christmas Tree on the night of Marty’s incident. Special thanks go to Jill King, a former village resident for her initiative and efforts to pass the hat around and all who donated. Marty was thrilled to learn of your generosity. This donation and other support received has assisted the family through a very difficult period.

“Australia Day” celebrated at Skate Night in Mango Hill – 9th February after weekend washout.

“We’ve not seen anything like this”, Nas Deghgan commented as his children enjoyed a night of fun at Skate Night on the Mango Hill Tennis Court taking out a prize or two from the Aussie Day gift bag.

It was another enjoyable night as numerous families enjoyed the night air under the stars as the kids swept around the tennis court on all types of wheeled contraptions. (left: Elijah D'Souza rides under the “limbo Stick”.

Above Deghgan family –

(from left, Dibi, Jay, Mily, Nas and Mia and Ray) Thank you to all the volunteers and folk who supported the event. Next Skate night should be at end of School Holidays in April. Date TBA.

Farewell to Jenny Stok

1915-2013

A Mango Hill Village Resident

1990 to 2002 Born in Holland

during World War 1 Jenny Stok would again endure the horrors of war as a young mother with two children born

during the Nazi occupation of Holland from 1940 to 1945. A trained nurse and teacher before the war, Jenny went to live in Italy and Spain in the 1950’s to 1970’s before emigrating to Australia in 1976 on the strong recommendation of her son Jon who had moved over in the 1960’s.

After living in Toowoomba, Deagon and

Brackenridge, Jenny and husband (also Jon) moved into the Village (Rose St) in 1990 where sadly Jon was to pass away only days later.

Thankfully despite that setback, Jenny would

come to know many friends in Mango Hill and was a member of the Progress Association for over a decade, Jenny loved to help out in the kitchen and cook items for Association activities.

Jenny was a very quiet achiever, who rarely

made mention of the hard times in her life and never forgot a birthday. She was a loyal friend who loved gardening and would drive twice weekly to Bribie Island for Taichi, Yoga and Meditation Classes. It was no wonder that in 2002, she made the decision at eighty seven to move to her new home on Bribie Island to be near her Taichi classes and friends.

Her history of travelling in many ways belies her

quiet demeanour. Jenny made several trips back home to Holland, as well as taking a daredevil trail through the Middle East, Kashmir and Afghanistan. Later she did the Rocky Mountains through Canada in a hired motorhome. In 1996 Jenny made her last overseas trip to China.

Blessed with wonderful health and determination,

Jenny continued to drive up until late 2012 when she fell ill with cancer and passed away on 6th January, only 1 month shy of her 98th birthday.

All who were privileged to have known Jenny

found that she gave life strength, substance and spirit to everyone around her. Her legacy of kindness, love and commitment will live on in our hearts and memories forever.

Selina and David prepare for their “Day of Days”

Congratulations go to Selina Billingham of

Alice Street and fiancé, David Fyfe of Everton Park who have announced their engagement and are preparing for their marriage on 6th April.

A medical scientist at Caboolture Hospital, Selina

is the second of five daughters to Walter and Jenny Billingham whilst David is an Electrical Engineer.

From Right:

Selina with sisters, Renata, Elysia, Janita and Corina

Having grown up in the Village, the Mango Hill

Community Hall was a fitting venue on Sunday for “High Tea” as Selina celebrated with her friends and family in readiness for the big day with Renata travelling up from Wagga on the NSW Victorian Border to join the happy “male free” occasion.

“We met at the City North Baptist Church & David proposed to me last October on the Sandgate Waterfront” Selina told the Mango Hill News.

Mango Hill News Readers join with Selina’s

friends & family in wishing the happy couple a wonderful day in April as they celebrate their wedding in the same church they met in some years ago.

Callum Jarvis prepares for

University as Mum also celebrates. Congratulations to Callum Jarvis of Rose St who has achieved his goal of entry into QUT to study Business Accounting. Callum who recently graduated from Grace Lutheran College at Rothwell and celebrated his 18th Birthday is keen to follow his Mum’s (Melody) career path as an Accountant.

The Big

beckoned for Melody last month & was a jovial affair given the

sounds of laughter and music from over the fence. “Walking to and from the bus each working day keeps me fit & young, but now having an 18 year old Uni. student; well that is another matter.” Melody quipped.

Art Group in Mango Hill A Community Art Group has been formed in

Mango Hill/North Lakes with local resident (and Artist), Jenny Topp (left) seeking to support art

and artisans. The group meets at the Mango Hill

Community on the 2nd and 4th Friday nights of the month. (7.00pm) You don’t need to be a professional! All abilities are welcome as well!

Music aids brain development in

many positive ways and this, accompanied by movement, accelerates the learning process

and establishes patterns faster and more concretely.

Not only that, the obvious joy it brings to both child and

carer and to friends and other class members we share our experiences with, contributes to our sense of community and gives us a sense of well-being. Just think – we are doing all this brain exercising and having fun at the same time! Singing is a very physical process – a great workout for the body – not only does it work out the upper body muscles but also releases endorphins (the body’s feel good hormones) to help reduce stress levels and increase alertness through increased oxygenation.

La di dah is pleased to be offering music classes for

children 2 years to 5 years of age at the Mango Hill Community Centre on Fridays. Children attend with their parent/carer for 45 minutes of singing, movement, instruments, playing games, and experience a vast range of activities using puppets, balls, books, ribbons and other things. Language and social skills are also nurtured whilst participating in these play based activities.

You are welcome to attend a free trial session. If you

wish to find out more information about the classes, please contact me as below.

Classes began on Friday 8th February 2013
