BEST ADVICEGARNET BARNSDALE: Watch the early races closely and try to determine if the track favors

leaders or closers and adjust your handicapping and wagering accordingly. You could hit some big prices if you see a legit track bias.

DAVE BROWER: Just try to have fun and enjoy one of the sport’s best nights of the year! You’ll see some truly championship performances on Saturday. Know you’re watching greatness.

DERICK GIWNER: There are some heavy favorites on the card. Don’t be afraid to take the small profit.

ASHLEY MAILLOUX: As always, don’t let the morning line odds talk you off a horse. Do your homework and go with your gut!

MARK MCKELVIE: The bigger they are the harder they fall. Favorites don’t normally sweep the stakes. Favorites have won five of the last 18 Cups. Take your shot.

KEN MIDDLETON, JR.: Take advantage of watching replays and scouting for troubled trips on horses from previous weeks of racing.

MONIQUE VAG: When stuck deciding between a few horses in the race, let the tote board guide you and pay close attention to the multi-leg WILL PAYs: these tell you the amount of money already bet.

GORDON WATERSTONE: Play Pick 3s where you can use longshots you might not normally consider. If you have a horse you love, and will single, you can spread out even more in the other legs.

IF YOU ONLY HAVE

$20GARNET BARNSDALE: Bet $20 to win on 3 ISLAND BEACH BOY in RACE 9

DAVE BROWER: In RACE 8, make a $10 exactor box of 3 PARTY GIRL HILL and 5 LADY LOU — They were both outstanding over the strip last week and I see them as towering over this stakes bunch.

DERICK GIWNER: RACE 4: $16 Exacta 4 with 3; $2 Trifecta 4 with 3,7

ASHLEY MAILLOUX: I’d make a $2 win bet in 10 of the races and just enjoy the races and hopefully win some money! Personally, in RACE 5 I’d play a $10 exacta 8/6,9.

MARK MCKELVIE: Just make sure you’ve got something left for the Jackpot Hi-5 mandatory payout (Race 13).

KEN MIDDLETON, JR.: $20 to win on 7 REAL SURREAL in RACE 6

MONIQUE VAG: $20 straight Daily Double. RACE 11 — 5 CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT with RACE 12 — 5 BEST HEAD WEST

GORDON WATERSTONE: In RACE 8, a $10 exacta box 3 PARTY GIRL HILL and 4 PEAKY SNEAKY

LOCK OF THE NIGHTGARNET BARNSDALE: RACE 4 – 4 ATLANTA – Doesn’t

have to face the boys or Manchego here. She is too good for these.

DAVE BROWER: RACE 2 — 5 CAVIART AUDREY — looks like the Lock of the Night to me! She’s an absolute superstar in the making for very top connections and the filly doesn’t even know what she’s doing yet. Onwards and upwards.

DERICK GIWNER: RACE 2 — 5 CAVIART AUDREY — Her talent is limitless and you might get a price as bettors lean to the undefeated Bet On Becky.

ASHLEY MAILLOUX: RACE 5 — 8 AMERICAN HISTORY — Won the preferred here last week and he LOVES this track.

MARK MCKELVIE: RACE 4 – 4 ATLANTA

KEN MIDDLETON, JR.: RACE 12 — 5 BEST HEAD WEST

MONIQUE VAG: RACE 11 — 4 TALL DARK STRANGER

GORDON WATERSTONE: RACE 11 — 4 TALL DARK STRANGER

LONG BOMB PICKGARNET BARNSDALE: RACE 9 – 3 ISLAND BEACH BOY – His race in the

Dream Maker final was excellent and he was flying late but ran out of race-track; could upset here with a trip.

DAVE BROWER: RACE 1 — 4 NIGHTLIFE SEELSTER — Not sure how the betting will go in here, but he might get ignored. And, that was some display of ability last time, so I’ll hop right back on aboard, hoping price will be right.

DERICK GIWNER: RACE 5 — 7 SINTRA — Lands in a contentious race and only needs the right trip to surprise.

ASHLEY MAILLOUX: RACE 10 — 4 SOHO BURNING LOVE A — she doesn’t have to face Shartin N, another King trainee tonight and she was sharp against her in the Dorothy Haughton and Clara Barton.

MARK MCKELVIE: RACE 7 — 10 UCANTTOUCHTHIS

KEN MIDDLETON, JR.: RACE 7 — 9 LAWLESS SHADOW

MONIQUE VAG: RACE 3 — 5 NIRVANA SEELSTER

GORDON WATERSTONE: RACE 3 — 8 IWONTDOTHATAGAIN — Dropping in class, but moves to an outside post after three straight post ones; should keep price up.

4 ATLANTA — losses this year have come to Manchego or a male competitor. There are no such foes here. Let’s hope her recent efforts help her price climb to even money.

3 PLUNGE BLUE CHIP — is 100 per cent the second best mare in this field. She has an upset chance given a great trip or an awful trip for Atlanta, but more likely she is racing for second.

7 FELICITYSHAGWELL S — put in her best race of the year in the Joie De Vie last time. She still needs to step it up another notch to compete on the win end. At least she has blazing early speed.

2 HEY LIVVY — is a talented local horse that has plenty to prove on this level. Her price seems likely to be lower than warranted.

3 PARTY GIRL HILL — hard to find any fault in a seven-for-seven record. She’s been absolutely sensational and has enough tactical speed so that she will be placed per-fectly early by driver Doug McNair to get the trip to make it eight straight.

4 PEAKY SNEAKY — it’s tempting to put her on top as strong as she looked in the elim while racing on Lasix for the first time. I have a sneaking hunch she’ll be challenging Party Girl Hill in deep stretch but not sure she can get past.

5 LADY LOU — gave Party Girl Hill all she could handle in the elim. I look for her to get a great covered trip here and make her presence felt in the stretch.

8 ALICORN — can’t win the race from behind from this post so I look for driver Louis Roy to fire her fast off the gate to look for early position. If he’s successful she will find a spot on the ticket somewhere.

8 STONEBRIDGE SOUL – looking at her performances so far this year, she finished third to Shartin N in the Lady Liberty and second in the Artiscape, which speaks volumes. Recently finished a solid second locally in the preferred for girls.

4 SOHO BURNING LOVE A — has picked up three wins this year, including a strong win on July 4 at the Big M, where she beat several in here. She’s also performed well in the Clara Barton (second) and the Dorothy Haughton (third).

3 MAJOR OCCASION A — scored the upset in the Dorothy Haughton at 50-1 with a solid drive from Dunn. Made changes to her hobbles and it’s seemed to help her, as she’s stepped up in some big races. Simply second best in Lady Liberty.

6 WARRAWEE UBEAUT — 2019 was her year and she per-formed quite well here. She’s yet to get back to that same form, but she might have needed time and notice who is getting back in the bike.

4 TALL DARK STRANGER — just loves this track! Don’t be fooled by last week’s “less-than-inspiring” elimination victory. This talented fella just loves to dig and fight. He’ll have to earn it again, as usual, but I would have a very tough time betting against.

3 CAPTAIN KIRK — arguably uncorked the best elimination effort last week. Even I was impressed with his relentless-ness. Also proved to me that he’s not just a “front-end” kind of horse. Very dangerous with a perfect new driver in Jody J.

7 TATTOO ARTIST — keeps McClure’s loyalty and that says a lot to me. Bob actually Tweeted this week, saying not to overlook this longshot. Had some traffic issues, and some pace left. That’s a big call!

8 ALLYWAG HANOVER — may end up getting over-bet again, just like he did in the Meadowlands Pace. He draws another unfortunate outside post and it will be Roy’s job to somehow save something for late. That may not be easy, without a complete change of tactics.

4 ATLANTA – returns to defend her title in this prestigious event for Burke and Gingras. The fastest female trotter in the history of Canadian racing will look to rebound from a rare off-the-board finish in the Cashman Memorial. She’s the one to beat.

2 HEY LIVVY — was a fast-closing runner-up versus preferred foes this past Monday, and she’ll do her best to play that type of a role in here. She’s her own worst enemy at times, but when she’s on her game she can fly.

3 PLUNGE BLUE CHIP — disappointed in her 2020 debut, but she’s been anything but disappointing since then. She turned a two-hole trip into an upset score over Manchego and others in the Joie De Vie at Tioga Downs in her latest. She’s very capable.

7 FELICITYSHAGWELL S — is a combined 0-for-16 over the last two years, and I don’t see her breaking out of that slump tonight. What I can see, however, is her playing a minor role for trainer Svanstedt and driver Filion.

3 PARTY GIRL HILL — never looked in danger of being defeated in her elimination as driver McNair appeared to be saving as much as he could for this final. She remains the one to beat as she looks to stay undefeated.

4 PEAKY SNEAKY — was razor-sharp and she impressed winning her elimination and having Gingras in the bike is an obvious plus. This race could turn out to be an epic battle between these two excellent fillies.

5 LADY LOU — paced a big back half uncovered last week and if you are looking to create some wagering value here, you might consider using her for 2nd in the Exacta and try to split the two elimination winners.

2 LAURAS LOVE — was motoring late in her elimination with-out threatening the top two. If she produces the same kind of late speed here, she can sneak into the Superfecta.

7 SO MUCH MORE — has had an incredible rise to promi-nence over the last year. The Beatson trainee was last year’s OSS Grassroots champ in October and by February beat the boys in the preferred. She’s won two of her last three going into her biggest test. We’ve seen her get airborne and I’ll look for her to soar by in the lane.

6 WARRAWEE UBEAUT — hasn’t had the year that anyone expected for her, but a return to the spot where she won a Breeders Crown last fall could provide a spark. Expect at some point she’ll find her groove.

8 STONEBRIDGE SOUL – winless so far in her 4-year-old season, but has been knocking at the door in recent starts. Her start last week at Mohawk Park should do her well for tonight.

3 MAJOR OCCASION A — scored the huge upset win over the best mares last month and has been in the hunt in other stakes contests. Early factor that will need to show plenty of fight.

4 TALL DARK STRANGER — showed a lot of grit in his elim win despite the issues with getting the plugs out. He had the luxury of choosing his post for the final and depending on what happens up front, the options are endless to map out a winning trip.

7 TATTOO ARTIST — got locked in and shuffled back in last week’s elim. For the final he draws a great post to show off that quick gate speed and solidify position up front early. Bob McClure’s choice over the other elimination winner in CAPTAIN KIRK!

5 CAPT MIDNIGHT — enters off two very solid efforts: two runner-up finishes in 1:47.4 in the Cane Pace, and in 1:48.2 in last week’s elim, both times to Tall Dark Stranger. If they decide to mix things up early, this colt could benefit the most.

8 ALLYWAG HANOVER — drew outside in the elim and got stung early (:25.4) making the front. Although he did get a breather in the second half, the damage may have been done. With some others likely quicker off the gate; a different trip could be the difference maker.

When the Pepsi North America Cup was launched in 1984, part of the concept was to pit the United States vs. Canada for continent-wide supremacy in one of the harness racing’s premier events. In order to carry on that theme for Pepsi North America Cup #37, we are proud to feature a handicapping battle between four Canadians — Garnet Barnsdale, Mark McKelvie, Ken Middleton, Jr. and Monique Vag — and four Americans — Dave Brower, Derick Giwner, Ashley Mailloux and Gordon Waterstone — all in the name of good spirit and, hopefully, maximum betting profits for you.

$1 MILLION PEPSI NORTH AMERICA CUP

Captain Crunch delivered a stunning Canadian record 1:47.2 performance to win the 36th edition of the $1 million Pepsi North America Cup on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Trained by Nancy Takter, Captain Crunch and driver Scott Zeron blasted off the wings of the gate from post-eight and claimed the top spot through a :26 opening-quarter. Bettors Wish overtook the lead quickly entering the backstretch before Workin Ona Mystery, the 7-5 favourite, surged up to take control at the half in :52.4.

Captain Crunch was removed by Zeron going into the far turn and confronted Workin Ona Mystery at three-quarters in 1:20.

In the stretch, Captain Crunch powered by to take the lead and held off a late push from Bettors Wish to win by three-quarters of a length in a track and Canadian record. Workin Ona Mystery finished third. Aflame Hanover, the longest shot in the race at 136-1, finished fourth.

“It feels unbelievable,” said Zeron following his first Pepsi North America Cup victory. “This has been the end-all, be-all for me. It’s completed my entire bucket list.

“We’ve got a lot of racing left to do, but I can’t say enough about how amazing this animal is. I didn’t want to be in that spot I was in in that race but at the same time he overcame it with just his greatness.”

A son of 2013 Cup winner Captaintreacherous, Captain Crunch came into the final off a break in his elimination. The sophomore pacer broke in the first-turn after jumping a shadow, forcing him to grind out a fifth-place finish.

Trainer Takter had the 2018 Breeders Crown champion prepped perfectly for owners 3 Brothers Stable, Christina

Takter, Rojan Stables and Caviart Farms.

“It was just one of those things that happens,” said Takter of Captain Crunch’s elimination miscue. “I knew that the horse raced really well just to make it to the final, so I really wasn’t wor-ried. I don’t want to sound cocky or anything but I knew he was the best horse going into it and it was just up to him to show everybody.”

Nancy Takter is the daughter of Hall of Fame trainer Jimmy Takter. Cap-tain Crunch was Nancy’s first

starter in the Cup. Ironically, the Pepsi North America Cup is one of only a few marquee races that her father did not capture during his Hall of Fame career.

“The last eighth of a mile I must screamed (the horse’s) name like 30 times,” said Nancy Takter. “My hands actually hurt but it was excit-ing to watch the race. Obviously, he didn’t get anything for free. He’s just an amazing animal.”

Captain Crunch went off at odds of 4-1 and returned $10.30, $5.10 and $3.30. A $2 Exacta with Bettors Wish paid $41.90. The $1 Trifecta with Workin Ona Mystery in the third-slot returned $59.70, while the $1 Superfecta completed by Aflame Hanover paid $721.80.

The clocking of 1:47.2 smashed the previous mark Canadian mark of 1:47.4, set by Cup winners Thinking Out Loud (2012) and Betting Line (2016).

Captain Crunch went on to finish the season with six wins, 12 top-three finishes and $1,096,853 earned in 16 starts. He was retired following his three-year-old campaign with career numbers of 12 wins, $1.7 million earned and a mark of 1:47.2.

Captain Crunch now stands stud at Diamond Creek Farms in Pennsylvania.
