Overview: Mandarin Chinese 4 continues the Mandarin course emphasis on reading, writing,

listening, and speaking skills for higher-level communication in Mandarin. Topics include vocabulary,

grammatical structures, idiomatic expressions and the forming of sentences and questions while

focusing on the communicative aspects of language.

Grammar is treated as a necessary component for accurate expression, written and spoken

communication containing proper grammar are assessed through differentiated activities to

accommodate all learners, including those needing further grounding in the intricacies of accurate

expression through grammatical precision.

The use of traditional as well as online tools for study, practice, and reinforcement in reading,

writing, speaking and listening is emphasized as important components in the preparation of

productive lifelong learners.

Geography and culture topics provide a necessary, well-rounded background for linguistic

acquisition, understanding and fluency.

Students must complete a minimum of two research projects related to Chinese culture, each

requiring information sourced from both library and online resources, submission of a written paper

with appropriate citations (4+), and a brief classroom presentation. See unit 12 for details on one of the

projects. The timing and content of additional projects will be determined by the teacher based on

classroom discussion topics.

Unit 1 (§37): Chinese Festivals 中国的节庆

Unit Outcomes: In this unit, students will learn the names of Chinese festivals and the

food, customs and history of these festivals. They can describe a festival in Chinese.

Essential Outcome and Related Standards:

A. Students will understand and remember words and phrases about festivals.

B. Students will be able to use the “过……节” to express “to celebrate ……festival”.

C. Students will master the use of “……的时候” to describe an action with a specific

time.

D. Students will be able to describe food, customs and history of a festival in Chinese.

E. Students will be able to correctly recognize and write basic Chinese characters

pertaining to Chinese festivals (灯,节,元,正) .

National Standard(s): 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2

Content and Instructional Activities:

A. Students will understand and remember words and phrases about festivals by

watching a PowerPoint presentation, watching videos, engaging in group activities,

and reading, writing, listening and speaking exercises including conversing with

classmates, computer-based exercises and engaging in a word card game.

B. Students will be able to use the “过……节” to express “to celebrate ……festival” by

watching a PowerPoint presentation and engaging in classroom activities, a

characters game, computer-based exercises, and reading, writing, listening, and

speaking exercises.

E. Students will be able to correctly recognize and write basic Chinese characters

pertaining to festivals (灯,节,元,正) by imitating teacher’s writing, writing with

practice sheets, using technology tools and playing a word card game.

Remediation: Review, workbook exercises and practice worksheets, dialogue practice,

listening exercises, tutoring, computer-based exercises and feedback, videos, revising

the mistakes of class work and homework, explaining difficulties, recording students'

pronunciation, personalizing vocabulary and using online resources (e.g., textbook, and

Unit 2 (§38): Shopping At the Store 去商店买东东西

Unit Outcomes: In this unit, students will use new vocabulary and grammatical structures used in shopping and bargaining with vendors. They will be able to describe items using an expanded array of colors.

Essential Outcome and Related Standards:

A. Students will know and use additional vocabulary to describe the colors of items,

including shades of light and dark colors (浅/深).

B. Students will know how to use“一点儿”to express comparison and small degrees of change.

C. Students will be able to use the comparison structure ”太……了”to express "too" or "very".

D. Students will be able to use “···吧” at the end of a sentence to indicate a suggestion or a command.

E. Students will be able to use “···行吗” at the end of a sentence to make a polite suggestion.

F. Students will be able to use Chinese to shop and bargain.

G. Students will be able to correctly recognize and write basic Chinese characters

related to shopping (百,行,以,深).

Unit 3 (§39): Grandpa’s Birthday Party 爷爷的生日会

Unit Outcomes: Students will use Chinese to describe events associated with a

birthday party, including authentic expressions of birthday wishes.

Essential Outcome and Related Standards:

A. Students will recognize and correctly write Chinese characters pertaining to

birthday parties.

B. Students will be able to use the sentence pattern “someone /something + 真 +

adj.” to describe “really……”.

C. Students will become familiar with specific measure words and their use in context.

D. Students will be able to use the sentence structure “Someone + 一面 to do

something + 一面” to describe someone doing two or more tasks at the same time.

E. Students will recognize and correctly pronounce and write the Chinese characters

for specific phrases pertaining to parties and party activities.

F. Students will be able to use and understand the sentence pattern “Person A + 送给

+ person B + something” to express “person A gives person B something as a gift”.

G. Students will know how to create a list with the sentence structure:Somewhere +

有 + something A,B,C,还有 D 和 E

H. Students will become familiar with specific four-character expressions of good

wishes used on birthdays:

Unit Outcomes: In this unit of study, students will be able to understand vocabulary

surrounding illnesses, they will be able to describe medical symptoms and speak to a

doctor about how they feel.

Essential Outcome and Related Standards:

A. Students will recognize and correctly write and pronounce Chinese characters

pertaining to illnesses.

B. Students will become familiar with the phrase ”body part + 疼”to describe pain in a

specific area.

C. Students will become familiar with the phrase “量体温”to talk about body

temperature.

D. Students will become familiar with the phrase “多+verb”、“少+verb” to describe

the frequency for doing something.

E. Students will understand and correctly use the conversational phrases “还有”,“还

要”and “还是”and they will be able to tell the difference between them.

F. Students will recognize and correctly use “应该”(should).

G. Students will understand and know how to use the phrase “person A + 要+ person

B + action”(person A asks person B to do something).

D. Students will discuss each presentation and take a test on key points highlighted in each presentation by student presenters and the teacher.
