About This Book
ay the word kaleidoscope and images of dazzling, colorful repeatingpatterns come to mind. Kaleidoscopes havefascinated children and adults alike since they werefirst invented in the early 1800s.
Sir David Brewster was a scientist who studied theprinciples of light. He was fascinated by whathappened when light was reflected. Brewstercarefully placed three mirrors in a tube and attacheda rotating chamber to hold pieces of broken coloredglass. The results were marvelous. The images viewed when gazing intothe tube were vibrant, ever-changing geometric collages formed by thereflections of the broken glass in the mirrors.
Brewster applied for a patent and marketed hiscreation as a toy. The inventor put three Greek wordstogether to name the toy: kalos, beautiful; eidos, form; and skopeo, I see. Most people would agreethat the images and colors reflected by this simpledevice are, indeed, beautiful forms to see!
In this book you will find a collection of kaleidoscopic images for yourstudents to color and enjoy. On each activity page, they will first solveaddition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems and then use akey at the bottom of the page to determine how to color the designs. Allyour students will need to complete these activities are colored pencils ormarkers, and a regular pencil.
You may wish to use the activities in this book toreinforce basic math skills. To further extend the math, science, and art connection, you may want tointroduce some of the basic principles of reflectionand have students make a simple kaleidoscopebefore beginning the activity pages. You’ll finddirections for a more in-depth look at this topic on thefollowing pages.

Kaleidoscope Basics
4. As students begin using the activity pages, encourage them to usetheir set of mirrors to explore the designs before coloring them. Forexample, in Circle of Stars (page 23), ask students todescribe the overall shape. (a hexagon) How manytriangles are inside the hexagon? (six ) Have themplace the hinged corner of the mirrors on the centerof the circle and then line up the mirrors with thesides of one triangle.
T
3. Then, invite students to experiment with the mirrors by placing themcloser together to form a right angle. How many reflections do they seenow? (four ) Next, have them test an acute angle. Guide students togeneralize that the farther apart the mirrors, the fewer the reflections; thecloser together, the more images they see.
Place two mirrors side by side, facedown on a flat surface. Tape thebacks of the mirrors together, leaving atiny space between them. This will allowthe mirrors to bend after they are taped.
To begin, have students position the mirrorsso that they form an obtuse angle. Tell them toplace a coin or another small object between thetwo mirrors. How many images or reflections dothey see? (two)
2.
1.
hrough the use of mirrors, kaleidoscopes create multiple repeatingimages and patterns. To figure out how kaleidoscopes work, it is best tostart with a hinged mirror. (See Resources, page 9.) If you do not havehinged mirrors, students can create their own:
5. Ask students how many images they see in themirrors. (six ) Have them remove the mirrors andlook at the whole page. They will notice that the image in the mirrors andthe image on the paper are identical—both show a hexagon with sixtriangles inside. Students can repeat this exploration with Candlelights(page 48), Ring of Peace (page 52), and Rainy Day (page 53).

Place the three mirrors facedown on a flat surface. Leave a smallspace between them so they can bend toform a triangle after they are taped.
1.
2. Cut two lengths of tape as long as theedge of the mirrors. First, press one piece oftape down firmly on the edge of two of themirrors so that it holds them together. Then, tape on the third mirror.
3. Stand the mirrors up, keeping the taped sides out.Fold the mirrors inward to form a triangle. Cut anotherpiece of tape and tape the last two edges together. Trimoff excess tape from the top and bottom.
Now, invite students to experiment with Purty Birds (page 12) and BirdsPlaying (page 24). Ask them to predict how many images they will seewhen they line up the mirrors with the sides of one triangle on each ofthese designs. Then have them test to find out. (Purty Birds: 8, BirdsPlaying: 12)
Let students explore further by placing the mirrors on top of otherdesigns in the book, or colorful pictures from magazines or posters.Encourage them to experiment making acute, right, and obtuse angleswith the mirrors to create different patterns. Students can also place smallobjects such as beads, coins, paper clips, and sequins between themirrors and experiment with how placement between the mirrors affectsthe reflections they see.

Make Kaleidoscope Math Art!
tudents will have fun making their own kaleidoscope math art activitiesusing the patterns on pages 61–64, scissors, glue sticks, and coloredpencils.
Half MoonsGive each student a copy of pages 61 and 62. Instruct students to followthe directions on page 61. As they position the half moon cutouts on thehexagon, guide students to notice that the shapes mirror each other.
Jumping DolphinsGive each student a copy of pages 63 and 64. This activity is a bit morechallenging. In order to make a kaleidoscopic image, students need tothink about where to place each dolphin around the circle so that theimages mirror each other.
After completing these activities, students can cut out the designs alongthe outer solid lines, and then mount them on construction paper fordisplay on a bulletin board or the windows of your classroom.

Now it’s time to have fun with the kaleidoscopes!Have students shake them up and watch the shapes tumble aroundinside, making beautiful reflections. Encourage them to hold theirkaleidoscopes up to the light of the window or take them outside. Askstudents to look in the kaleidoscope and find the six-sided hexagon shapeand the mirrored reflections. Remind them of their explorations with Circleof Stars, Ring of Peace, Rainy Day, and Candlelights. What similarities dothey notice between those designs and the kaleidoscopic images?
Students can decorate the outside of thekaleidoscope with wrapping paper, constructionpaper, or wallpaper samples, if desired.
Place the scraps of paper, sequins, glitter, orbeads inside the kaleidoscope.5.
Cut a piece of plastic wrap a little bigger thanthe triangle opening. Pull it tight over the openingand hold it in place with a rubber band. Now, holdthe edges of the plastic wrap in place with tape.
