In the 19th century, Manchester was oneof the few cities in the UK to boast alarge open meeting space in the heart ofits centre. Back then, the area was knownas St Peter’s Field, people from all overthe North of England would meet at StPeter’s Field to debate issues of the day,be it free trade and labour reform or theburgeoning movements towards equalityand democracy.

Today the area is known as Petersfield,this historical part of the city is home toManchester’s modern meeting place - aconvention complex where people fromall over the world can meet in style andcomfort, trade ideas, do business andhold great events.

At the heart of Petersfield lies one of theUK’s most flexible venues, which hasbeen part of the Manchester skyline forover 150 years. If you were stood withinits huge vaulted arches at the turn of thelast century you’d be surrounded bysuitcases and steam trains, butsophisticated exhibition stands are nowthe order of the day.

In 1986 Manchester Central RailwayStation was reborn to form the GreaterManchester Exhibition and Event Centre,more commonly know as G-Mex. Theconversion of this landmark building wasrevolutionary as one of the first urbanregeneration projects in the UK. G-Mexhas been home to an eclectic anddemanding range of events during its life;high profile political conferences, world-class sporting events, gala dinners for

thousands, jumping pop concerts andeven an indoor funfair and dance arena.

The year 2000 saw the opening of theadjacent Manchester InternationalConvention Centre (MICC) which createda focus for re-development and renewal.

In January 2007, the combined facilities ofG-Mex and MICC started using a newname - Manchester Central, this name isused to refer to the whole facilities on-site including a convention auditorium, ahost of breakout rooms, corporatefacilities, and not forgetting 13,500 sq mof exhibition space. The overall facilitieswithin the area are known as ManchesterCentral Convention Complex, a name thatis now firmly established within theinternational event marketplace.

Manchester Central is currentlyundergoing a multi-million pounddevelopment programme. The plansinclude a new and extended foyer areaplus extra catering and seminar spacesthat will add to the venue’s appeal as oneof Europe’s major convention andexhibition complexes.

The development, which will cost inexcess of £20 million, has been carefullyplanned over three phases to avoiddisruption to the venue’s ongoingoperation. Designed by the award-winningarchitects, Stephenson Bell, thedevelopment will be both sympathetic tothe Grade II listed frontage as well asbringing substantial operational benefitsto clients and users of the venue.

Manchester Central is a combination of exhibitionand conference facilities that form a uniqueconvention complex right in the heart of the city.

For event organisers, Manchester Central has the flexibility to handle all size of events fromintimate corporate functions to large scale highprofile international exhibitions and conferences.The complex boasts two exhibition halls, apurpose-built auditorium and breakout rooms,plus a suite of corporate meeting facilities. Themain exhibition space, Central Hall, provides asingle column-free area that can be used forconventional exhibition layouts or for moreunusual installations that utilise the height andcharacter of the interior. Central Hall can also besubdivided into two smaller halls.

The year 2009 promises to be an exciting year forManchester Central as the Convention Complex isundergoing a multi-million pound redevelopmentprogramme, which will provide greater ease ofaccess throughout the site and additional facilities.

The first stage of the development – the creation of a new entrance and foyer space – was completed on time in November 2008, ensuring that events and conferences can continue as normal during the second stage of redevelopment work.

The next phase of the development will create additional capacity, flexibility and accessibility for Manchester Central, including a new look frontage to Central Hall that will reveal even more of the magnificent Grade II listed building.

The building’s £20 million facelift will give a contemporary new look to one of Manchester’s best-loved landmarks, as well as significantly enhancing the levels of service excellence that event organisers and visitors can expect.

Work has started on the second stage of Manchester Central’s major redevelopment, creating even more choice and even better services for conference and event organisers.
