When more than 800 graduates were conferred degrees and certificates at Manchester Community College’s 50th commencement ceremony in May, it marked the end of a year-long celebration of MCC’s five decades of service to the greater Manchester community. The celebra-tion kicked-off with a birthday party in September 2013, attended by hundreds of students, faculty and staff, alumni and community members. Throughout the year a series of signature events followed, including a retiree luncheon, an alumni networking event, a student leaders reception, a homecoming reception, an alumni art show, the annual classical cuisine dinner, and a luncheon for emeriti faculty and staff, founders, valedictorians and salutatorians, distinguished alumni and other special guests preceding commencement. The Evening of Fine Wines also added birthday flair to its program, with the singing of “Happy Birthday”, birthday-themed desserts and special guests includ-ing restaurateur Billy Grant and Miss Connecticut United States.

MCC’s Vision:

1. Academic Excellence. MCC demon-strates academic excellence and rigor in its programs and courses, and continu-ally improves the quality of learning, teaching and student support.

2. Student Success and Enrollment Management. MCC is a college where all students develop a clearly identified pathway to meet their educational goals.

3. Partnerships. MCC meets the needs of our students and stakeholders by lever-aging the collective creativity, experience and commitment of the college commu-nity and our regional partners.

4. College Culture. MCC is a world-class organization where we intentionally build our capacity for shared leadership, shared understanding and shared re-sponsibility. The college fosters a culture of innovation, diversity and inclusion.

Educational and Facilities Master PlanMCC’s 2011 Educational and Facilities Master Plan proposes the addition of a classroom building that will house a new Hospitality and Culinary Arts Center, an

expansion for Allied Health programs, a new Child Development Center and STEM (science-technology-engineering-mathematics) classrooms. While MCC offers a wide variety of workforce and technical programs to meet the needs of the region, there are space constraints that do not allow for program and enrollment growth in certain clusters. Four signature programs – Hospitality, Allied Health, Engineering and Manufacturing – are particularly stifled by space challenges, limiting the number of students the programs are able to accommodate. Additionally, the Culinary Arts classroom kitchens and the Early Childhood lab are in need of major upgrades. State of Connecticut bond funding will be sought for the planning of the new classroom building and the cost of construction, and a capital campaign will complement the expansion plan through equipment and renovations.

Transform CSCU 2020At a press conference held at MCC, Gover-nor Dannel P. Malloy introduced Transform CSCU 2020, “a multi-year, multi-layered investment that will unite our 12 communi-

ty colleges, four state universities and single online college into one system. It will help colleges adapt to student needs and offer the kind of dynamic higher education experi-ence that students want and employers expect. We know that 70 percent of jobs in 2020 will require postsecondary education. That’s why it is imperative that we garner support for these necessary investments in our students.”

Transform CSCU 2020 is designed to improve student experience and degree completion, expand academic and work-force training programs and build stronger partnerships with the state’s manufacturers and the business community. The goal of Transform CSCU 2020 is to create a system

that better serves students and ensures that Connecticut’s system of higher education remains accessible, affordable and account-able. Building on the strength of current programs, Transform CSCU 2020 will at-tract and retain students through innovative new programs, expand online learning and better align coursework with the strongest industry growth sectors.

These planning documents are the roadmap by which MCC will travel for the next five to ten years. Through the efforts that went into creating these plans, and the commitment to student success exemplified in their deployment, MCC is on a clear path to continued accomplishment and success.

Strengthening Student Success

Scholarships

Each year, the MCC Foundation scholar-ship program awards funding to deserving students who struggle to cover the cost of higher education. Academic achievement and financial need-based scholarships are awarded to students that meet the criteria for funding, which include financial con-straints, academic excellence, outstanding merit, and service to the community and to MCC.

For scholarship recipient Maria Reyes, the support of the MCC Foundation Scholarship program played a significant role in helping her close her financial gap. Reyes, who is paying her own tuition as well as living expenses, says that MCC has provided her with a support system. “The college has given me direction,” she said. It has opened a lot of doors . . . I didn’t even know that they had scholarships.”

The MCC Foundation awarded over $220,000 to more than 260 deserving students in 2013. These awards are made possible due to the generosity of donors, through which students realize their dreams of access to higher education.

The following scholarships were awarded in 2013:

22nd Annual Evening of Fine Wines an Undeniable Smash

The MCC Foundation held its 22nd annual Evening of Fine Wines on Friday, April 25, 2014. Over 600 people were in attendance at the college’s largest fundraiser. This year’s event was also a signature event for MCC’s 50th birthday celebration.

Thanks to the support of the presenting sponsor Barry Kelly, president and CEO of Kelser Corporation, this year’s Evening of Fine Wines was one of the most successful ever, grossing nearly $259,000. Proceeds from the event support academic programs and provide financial assistance for hundreds of deserving students.

Elegant hors d’oeuvres and a display of special 50th birthday desserts were prepared and presented by Culinary Arts students. Local celebrity chef Billy Grant, one of the MCC Foundation’s most recently elected board members, worked with student chefs in creating menu items. MCC student Delany Quinn, of Willington, commented on her experience working with Grant. “Working on the wine auction and with Billy Grant has been a real life experience of the ins and outs of the food service industry. The preparations can be difficult at times, but the end result is what makes this all worth it.”

MCC Foundation board members and event co-chairs Gary Lavigne and Betsy Treiber extend their gratitude to all of the donors, volunteers, guests and students. “Our community continues to make this event the premier wine tasting gala east of the River,” stated Treiber.

more has nearly doubled over the last two years. Many of these donors have given and increased their support of the Foundation through the Evening of Fine Wines. The 2013 Evening of Fine Wines grossed over $240,000, an increase of more than $50,000 from 2012, with 650 attendees. This year’s Evening of Fine Wines is projected to exceed its gross goal of $250,000. A huge boon to the event’s success in 2014 was a $50,000 gift from Dr. Robert and Mrs. Joyce Fish.

Each year, the MCC Foundation awards scholarships to students based on academic merit and financial need. In 2013, 268 students were awarded $209,000. In 2014, 260 students were awarded $221,055. The Foundation has also done more and more to support college programs. This programmatic investment is essential in achieving and sustaining a level of excellence for our programs that would not be possible without private financial support. Academic programs such as culinary arts, student programs such as our Veterans OASIS, and community arts and entrepreneurship programs such as those held at MCC on Main thrive because of your generosity and, in turn, help more students earn an excellent education from MCC.

Looking ahead, we continue to work with the campus community, volunteers and Foundation board of directors to explore feasibility for a major capital and program-matic campaign. This campaign will be essential to the advancement of the college’s master plan for program and facilities expansion. To assist in these efforts, the Founda-tion recruited seven new members onto its board to help carry forth in its broadened focus and new direction. The goal, as always, is to touch the lives of as many students as we can.

I hope you will continue to be part of this next exciting chapter in the Foundation’s history. Thank you for your support of MCC, its students and its future.

Alumni

Alumnus of the Year Tina Carnelli ’99Tina Carnelli ’99 is the recipient of the 2013 Alumnus of the Year Award. The award is given to an alumnus/alumna who has shown exemplary service leader-ship; offered major, positive contributions to society; and who has brought credit to themselves and MCC through distin-guished accomplishments.

Carnelli recently joined Morris Group as marketing manager. Previously, she was communications manager for Pratt & Whitney. Following her graduation from MCC, Carnelli went on to receive a MA in communications from University of Hartford, where she graduated summa cum laude. Carnelli is also an adjunct professor in MCC’s Communications Department.

Carnelli has been acknowledged for her skill in writing and communications through several literary and service awards. Carnelli is also involved in and supports many basic needs, health-related, and animal rights causes and organizations. She was also voted onto the MCC Foundation board of directors in 2013.

“Tina epitomizes the true essence of the alumnus of the year,” stated Jim Parry, MCC Foundation board member. “After graduating in 1999, she has remained connected with MCC, not only serving our students as an adjunct faculty member, but also supporting our community through her civic responsibility. She is a remarkable individual and truly deserving of this award.”
