Our Carers

We use a rigorous selection process so we ensure we are selecting carers with the relevant

experience and training in care. Managing Care provide further in house training before our

carers are assigned to our clients. All our carers are employed directly and we process their

payroll in-house, which includes their tax, National Insurance and we are responsible for their

holiday pay and sickness pay. All carers will carry out a Criminal Record Bureau

(CRB) check and four references are followed up by our recruitment team.

Our Carers are regularly checked by our supervisor or Care Manager to ensure their work is

carried out correctly as well as ensuring our carers they have the right support by our

management team.

Our Carers are awarded on a regular period for recognition and their commitment to care.

This is done through Internal Awards, certificates, payment bonus, as well as National

Awards. Such awards have received support from across the social care sector, including

the Department of Health, the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services

(ADASS), Ceretas, the English Community Care Association (ECCA), the Social Care

Institute for Excellence (SCIE), theNational Skills Academy and Skills for Care.

Matching the Right Carer

Managing Care team members work extra hard to ensure that we can match the right carer for

you. We feel it is important that we consider a suitable fit of personalities and general interest

so that you look forward to our carers visits. Normally we would like to introduce two or

three carers where one will be the main and regular carer for you. The other two are available

to provide support during holidays and sickness cover of your main carer.

During the initial period of your care service, our team will be in touch to make sure you are

happy with your carer and to discuss if your current carer is a good fit. If this is not the case,

we are only more than happy to make adjustments and find another carer for you.

What Our Carers Say

Working in a care environment, particularly with clients with dementia, can be very

challenging, but also just as importantly, it has its own rewards. To begin with no two days

are ever the same; a clients needs are always changing, which means you are constantly

adapting to keep up with them. One of the innovations that I have helped implement has been

around introducing more flexibility around the way in which we organise our day,

particularly around feeding times. This has involved moving what was previously the largest

meal of the day, which was served in the evening to lunchtime and swapping this with a

lighter meal of soup and sandwiches. This small change has however already made a big

difference. As well as, accommodating better the various mood swings that the client has

during the day, it has helped remove a lot of the stress that previously surrounded meal times.

We can now better ensure that the client is always well fed. Taking care of the little details in

life, those we often take for granted, such as using the toilet, brushing ones teeth or having a

bath has equally required new ways of working. This has involved introducing greater levels

of flexibility, within reason. For instance around when and how we begin certain tasks; only

beginning a task when it is clear that the client will be receptive. Stopping if he is not or

postponing it to a later time; with the focus shifting to getting things done when it best suits

the mood of the client, rather than sticking religiously to a set schedule. Naturally these

changes have required me to be better organised. This has meant not only ensuring that the

duties that I carry out every day are done in the most efficient way possible, but also that I

am always responsive to my clients needs. Finally, in my view, caring for someone else

involves being sensitive to all their needs; be they physical, in terms of being kept warm, fed,

comfortable and clean; to understanding their emotional needs, learning what makes them

happy, as well as, providing companionship. I have spent many hours quietly sitting beside

my client, listening to him and providing reassurance. I have equally spent just as many

hours singing along with him to his favourite records and seeing in the glint in his eyes the

joy that a lifetime of memories can bring.

- Richard Traill

My personal approach to providing care is driven by my passion for the job that I do and the

people that I help. It makes no difference if they are black, brown, yellow, white, male or

female, or what religion they follow. Whilst I know they are “clients”, to me they are first and

foremost people. And each one is an individual with his or her own personality and needs.

People who need care are more frequently in situations that are difficult and potentially

demeaning.

By the very nature of their situations, the people I care for suffer from mood-swings which

can be surprising. Fortunately, I have a patient nature – combined with enough experience

under my belt which allows me to handle these changes, while at the same time maintaining

the patient’s self esteem and and dignity.

Some personal qualities of care are constant – like courtesy and respect. At different times, I

bring different attributes, as the moment requires: be it compassion or positivity, and

frequently a sense of humour.

The key is to get to know each person very well. I feel a very strong sense of responsibility

here, because on numerous occasions, they come to lean on me and rely upon me totally.

They expect me to become a friend and always be there for them.

After 10 years experience, I have developed levels of awareness such that I often know

immediately and intuitively what to say and do, and the right way to handle a situation.

This experience not only helps me to support each person in a way that is tailored to his or

her individuality and personality; it also allows me to look objectively at the way their days

are structured, and to re-organise their routine, in a way that is most beneficial to them.

Good, clear, communications are basic skills, often highly under-rated, but doubly important

in the work of caring.

Improving and sustaining their “Quality of Life” at the highest possible level is really

important to me. I do this through gaining their trust, and building a strong and lasting

relationship. A caring relationship is based on recognition of, and sensitivity to, their

individuality and needs – and that relies on skills of keen observation and awareness, good

listening and conversation. Developing these critical skills are goals which I constantly

measure myself against.

In quiet moments when I sit back and reflect, I know I leave each individual I care for, in a

state of mental happiness and physical wellbeing. I feel truly blessed that I perform a task

that also gives me such a great deal of fulfilment and personal satisfaction.

Our Specialised Care Programs for the Elderly:

Dementia

Quality of life means a lot of things to a lot of people. At Managing Care, we believe that three key

factors are vital to enjoy a better quality of life and we address these through the services we offer.

These are to have:

someone to love and be loved in return

somewhere to live, a place we call our home

something to do which caters for our interests and aspirations

It’s very important that people with dementia are treated with respect. It is important to remember that

a person with dementia is still a unique and valuable human being, despite their illness.

When a person with dementia finds that their mental abilities are declining, they often feel vulnerable

and in need of reassurance and support. The people closest to them – including their carers, friends

and family – need to do everything they can to help the person to retain their sense of identity and

feelings of self-worth.

Our carers can help you on a one-to-one basis with all domestic duties that may have become more

difficult, as well as providing personal care. Our carer will also be a companion to support you

emotionally as well as physically.

If you are caring for a person with dementia, you may sometimes find their behaviour confusing,

irritating or difficult to deal with, leaving you feeling stressed, irritable or helpless. We specifically train

our carers to work with these situations. They understand the importance of learning the meaning

behind the actions of the person with dementia and to always respond in a calm manner. This way

our carers can deal effectively with the challenges that arise.

Managing Care Ltd, really ‘Get-It’. They understand that the (old) Care Models of ‘statism’ and applied

chunks of Hours/Days/Visits are a thing of the past. They engage carers on the basis of supporting

the Client OUTCOMES, through the application of normal care activity, without loosing sight of the

OBJECTIVES. They are also a very professional firm, who try that little bit harder to win-through.

Sarah my Wife recognises this as a good reason why we moved from the last firm, who were rooted

in static care. This is OUTCOME focused dynamic care in action. Well done MCL. Well done Emel,

our carer.

Parkinson’s

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, you may be anxious about the

future. Parkinson’s is a serious degenerative brain condition that impedes motor skills, speech, and

other functions. It creates rigidity of muscles and slows physical movement, meaning everyday tasks

can become increasingly difficult or even impossible.

Managing Care supports Parkinson’s clients works across the spectrum of Parkinson’s progression.

Whether you simply require regular care for medication prompts and meals, or are looking for a full-

time, live-in carer, we can help.

Why opt for care at home?

When it comes to managing Parkinson’s, routine is everything. For example irregular medication

consumption can be hazardous for sufferers, upsetting the balance of the brain and causing

unpredictable symptoms, such as:

Inability to speak, move, eat or swallow

Uncontrolled body movements

Disturbing psychosis symptoms.

With Managing Care, you will have a one on one relationship with an expert carer, in which your

welfare will be their sole focus. And since inconsistency of surroundings and routine can create stress

(which can be harmful for Parkinson’s sufferers), the stability of this relationship has further benefits.

We can help with:

Carefully monitoring your ups and downs day by day

Supervising of medication intake

Cooking, housekeeping and general errands

Supporting and supervising you in performing tasks which you are able to do, but that are

difficult

Being on hand to liaise with any other helpful professionals as necessary, as well as giving

regular wellbeing reports to family

Providing a friendly face and a stable, consistent source of personal support

Ensuring health and safety at home.

Our expert carers are specially trained in how to deal with Parkinson’s. We search out the most

highly-qualified and dedicated staff, to walk hand-in-hand with you through those tasks that have

become a challenge. From the outset, we will work with you and your family to create a unique care

plan that maximises your independence in a safe way. Your life, best lived, is our priority.

the condition is vital in maintaining a high standard of care. Care staff is also trained to be flexible in

their approach, to be creative listeners and adopt different communication techniques when

interacting with people with Alzheimer’s.

We have successfully built a good working relationship with the Alzheimer’s Society and send our

care staff to gain some practical experience at one of their local day centers as part of their induction

training.

We provide a range of services for people with Alzheimer’s including respite

care, companionship and one-to-one support. Engaging Alzheimer’s patients in stimulating activities

has been proven to be an essential contributing factor to healthier lifestyles, good quality of life, well

being and slow regression.

household chores, depending on the client’s interests, hobbies and background. We understand that

by building a rapport and getting to know our clients really well and collating information about their

background, family history, past interests and hobbies, we can provide them with activities that are

both stimulating and satisfying.

Our Specialised Support Programs for Younger People with:

Learning Disabilities

If your adult child has a learning disability, you are probably anxious to ensure they receive the best

care. Sometimes families can feel conflicted about leaving a loved one with a new carer, and worried

effectively with adults with learning disabilities, including:

Autism

Down’s syndrome

we’ll take the time to find out all about your loved one – their needs, health, habits and preferences.

For example we can assist with:

Helping your adult child to think about what they want in their life and be involved in the

planning of their care if at all possible

Liaising with any other appropriate professionals as required by you and your family

Supervising your child’s health and safety as they undertake day to day activities

Helping your loved one to develop and stick to boundaries and routine – for example when to

wash and eat, and physically assisting with these tasks if required by your child’s condition

Encouraging your adult child’s independence in a safe and responsible manner – for example

helping them to get out and about and participate in activities or pursue any goals

Cooking, housekeeping and general errands

Prompting medication.

Our experienced carers have the expertise, and just as importantly the compassion, to ensure your

loved one is supported in order to thrive.

Multiple Sclerosis

We understand the difficulties that a brain or nervous system injury can inflict upon a person, both in

terms of daily life and their ongoing health. Multiple Sclerosis, motor neuron and brain injury all

manifest in varied ways and require the utmost level of care. Sensory problems, wasting muscular

strength, loss of balance and speech, increased fatigue, and a general impact on thought and

emotion make these traumatizing and life-changing situations to be in.

Different people react differently to such diagnoses, from relief in knowing that there is a definite,

known cause for the problems they are facing to shock at the sudden and life-altering consequences.

Such reactions are completely natural. Our carers understand and empathise with the client’s

situation, making them realise that a diagnosis of this nature does not necessarily spell the end of

independence.

You are not alone. We are there for you.

Our services range from live-in care services, where the carer stays with you and assists you

professionally and personally, to respite and hourly care services to relieve family carers when they

need to rest or are otherwise unavailable.

Cancer

We know that being diagnosed with cancer can be life-changing, both emotionally and otherwise. Our

carers are sensitive to your needs at this important juncture of your life. We offer a comprehensive

care plan, covering the following areas:

Everyday caring: This includes personal care such as washing, bathing, dressing, hair care,

controlling pain and sleep problems.

Respite Care: We know that when you’re caring for someone full-time, it is very important to

take breaks, or you might get stressed, resentful or even fall sick. We offer respite in such

situations with our hourly care service.

Hospital Visits & Rehabilitation Support: For a person with cancer, routine visits to the

hospital unfortunately become a part of life.

We mould our services around your needs, and don’t expect you to mould around our services. We

know that everyone’s needs are different and our carers completely adapt their care to you. They are

good listeners, professional supporters, help you with finding points of social contact, and always try

to ensure that you can live as independently and for as long as possible in the familiar surroundings of

your own home.

Testimonials

“My husband suffers from dementia and, when we recently moved to London after 35 years

in Switzerland, I was at a total loss in terms of finding good and reliable care for Gerald. An

acquaintance recommended Managing Care. I have been extremely pleased with the service

provided – the carers are very good in dealing with my husband: they have quickly picked up

on his specific needs and, most importantly, show him respect and kindness. I can leave my

husband with confidence knowing that he will be well looked after.” Asha, Fulham

“I should mention that we are very happy with the service we’ve been getting from my

mother’s regular carers, Juliet and Leona – mother, who is 94 and has advanced dementia,

seems to trust them and gets on well with them – and from their manager Michelle who has

always ensured that the care service is uninterrupted and of a very high quality.” Tony,

Clapham

“I appreciate all the excellent work your Team has done while we’ve been here, they

exceeded our expectations, thank you, especially Mirta who has been an absolute jewel.”

Jeremy, Putney

“My uncle (aged 77) is not an easy man. When he was in hospital he lost his independence

and they seemed to strip him of his personality. He became cowed and unable to do anything

for himself. Leona and Mirtha (his Managing Care carers) have given him back his

personality and his will to live. Thank you – I now have my difficult old uncle back!” Sue,

Brixton

“Just to say that we were delighted with how it all went yesterday! My mother liked Mirtha,

who sounded very nice and Simona was happy too. So, thank you for coming to the rescue so

promptly and efficiently, and with such kindness too.” Christine, Putney
