Although she stopped working outside of the home when her first of seven children was born, trust me when I tell you that she never stopped being a nurse. During the many years of childrearing, there were hundreds of times when her expert nursing assessment skills were needed for the various illnesses, broken bones, and other injuries my siblings and I incurred. To say the least, we kept her busy! When her last child was old enough, my mom returned to the work force. She went back to work simply because she loved being a nurse. The VNA (Visiting Nurses Association) was her first place of employment after being away from the work force for more than 20 years. Although she could have been hired as an RN, because my mom is a very careful and conscientious person, she decided it would be best for her to start as a nurse’s aide in order to refresh her skill set. In a very short period of time, she was working as an RN for the VNA and absolutely loving her work. She adored every single day of her work up until the day she officially retired (for the second time) from the work force. Although I know she cared for many special people during her career, in my opinion, her nursing skills were never more important than when she cared for my dad. When his health declined, my mom was a champion in attending to his every need. I will always be forever grateful to her for this. This month, among other events, we celebrate Nurses Week. Please join me in thanking our nurses for the exceptional compassion and care they deliver. I am most grateful to the nursing staff at Belmont Village and appreciate all that they do every day, 24 hours a day, to ensure that our residents are given the best! And I know, without a doubt my mom is proud of you and thanks you, too! NURSES WEEK Celebrate Belmont Nurses May 6 - 12

flowers in a garden. Based on thefollowing clues, can youdetermine how many flowers andhow many bees there are?

1. If each bee lands on a flower, then one bee is left withouta flower.

HealthyLifestyle

Springtime has arrived, andwith it, the time for springcleaning. This is normally done bycleaning out closets, organizing, and throwing out junk. We can dothe same with our diets bythrowing out junk food, processedfoods and eating only fresh fruitsand vegetables. We can springclean our metabolism by cleaneating, one meal at a time.

Clean eating is a trend that wesee everywhere these days. A lot ofrestaurants are getting back tobasics, called “farm to table.” Theybuy local foods that are fresh andnot processed. The taste is muchbetter and the food is morenutrient rich. Our foods atBelmont are fresh and local, so wehave been eating clean at Belmontfor a while now!

The term clean eating means toeat the healthiest options in eachfood group, embracing foods suchas whole grains, fresh vegetablesand fruits, and healthy proteins. Italso means staying away fromjunk food and processed foodslike hot dogs, bologna, donuts, candy bars, etc.

Clean eating is not aboutweight loss but focuses on goodhealth. Eating clean may lead toweight loss for some byeliminating unhealthy fats andsugar from the diet. If you eat

fresh vegetables and fruits andstay away from fried foods andprocessed foods you will startfeeling healthier. Eating localmeats that are not raised on largefactory farms is also healthier byeliminating antibiotics andhormones that are fed to largefactory-farmed animals.

Here are some tips to starteating clean:

• Eat fresh fruits and vegetablesinstead of salty and sugaryfoods as a snack

• Instead of eating sweetenedfruited yogurt, buyunsweetened yogurt and addyour own fresh fruit

• Eat snacks like pretzel chips, nuts, or crunchy vegetablesinstead of salty chips

Experiment With SaladsMay is National Salad Month,

the perfect time to change up yoursalad repertoire. Ingredients likesliced Brussels sprouts and fenneladd crunch to the mix, while kalestrips incorporate an earthy flavor.

Employees and residents, let’sexperiment with salad!
