2. Ph.D. degree Degree requirements

• Six required courses: 3 core courses (MSCI 603, 605, 607) and 3 elective courses.

• An overall average of at least 73%: This rule applies both to master and Ph.D. degrees.

• Pass the comprehensive exam, no later than the end of the 4th term of enrolment.

• Pass the oral exam and defend a thesis of independent and original research, to be completed by the end of term 12.

2. Switching from MMSc to MASc For MMSc students, the Graduate Officer is your

supervisor. Students must complete the 1st or 2nd term, and take

time to get to know the potential supervisor. • Some issues to consider in selecting a supervisor include

topic, expertise, supervision style, personality and funding. Final assessment of each student’s supervisor match

3. Graduate courses Core courses

• MSCI 603: Principles of Operations Research • MSCI 605: Organization Theory and Behaviour • MSCI 607: Applied Economics for Management • MSCI 609: Quantitative Data Analysis (for MMSc) Elective courses outside the Department must be

3. Course exemptions Students (master and Ph.D.) may apply for

exemptions from any of the required core courses. • For master students, each exempted course must be

replaced. o For MMSc students, a minimum of 8 courses must be taken. o For MASc students, a minimum of 5 courses must be taken.

• For Ph.D. students, exempted core courses do not need to be replaced.

• Please submit exemption application with ALL documentation by September 12, 2014 to Lisa Hendel.

3. Failure in courses Students must maintain a minimum 73% overall

average in all coursework. • A grade below 65% is considered a fail. • A failed course will count in your overall GPA, but will not

count towards the required number of courses. Review of failing grade

• A failed core course must be repeated (one time only). • A failed elective course must be replaced. • Students with the average lower than 73% are required to

withdraw from the program.

3. Drop/Add courses Students can drop & add courses via Quest available

until the 6th week of the term - October 20th. After October 20th, students should complete a

drop/add form. • The form must be approved by the course instructor and

your supervisor. • Return the form to Lisa Hendel. Be sure to include a rationale (reason) for dropping

the course; or it will not be approved!

3. Activity Reports Only MASc and Ph.D. students should submit the

activity reports each term, starting the second term. • It enables the department to gauge students’ progress and

to assist in the awarding of scholarships. • Students are provided feedbacks if required. Process

• It is due by the end of the second week of the term. • It indicates the academic progress (courses and research). • Your supervisor must sign the activity report before you

submit it.

4. Policies and Grievances It is your responsibility to be familiar with the

University Graduate Calendar, Faculty guidelines, and Department guidelines. • If you are a transitional or probationary student, be sure to

review that section in the Graduate Calendar. All students should read:

4. Academic Integrity All students are required to take the online

Academic Integrity course. One important topic is how to avoid plagiarism. See

the handout. New graduate students will have until October 31,

2014 to successfully complete the quiz. Any questions, please contact Amanda McKenzie at

4. Academic Integrity If a student is found guilty of plagiarism, there will be

a minimum 20% penalty taken off of the final grade. If the assignment is worth more than 20%, the value

of the assignment will be used. The Associate Dean of Graduate Studies may

penalize you with another 5 points off of your final grade. • Check UW Policy 71 (Academic Discipline)

5. Co-op program Application requirements

• Application deadline: December 2, 2014 • It is available to master students only. • Minimum of 80% in the Fall 2014 grade or previous degree. • A good command of English Program requirements

• Sequence 1: F14A – W15A – S15WT – F15WT – W16A • Sequence 2: F14A – W15A – S15WT – F15A – W16WT – S16A • Complete a work term reports for each term, approved by

the Graduate Officer.

6. Teaching Assistantships (TAs) Each term, the department hires TAs for various

courses (depending on the number of enrolment). • The application form and information on TA application

• Students must successfully completed the ExpecTAtions workshop to be eligible for TA (offered on September and April each year).

• The selection decision of TAs is solely on the instructor of the course.

6. Teaching Assistantships (TAs) TAs’ duties

• TAs are paid for providing support to the teaching of MSCI courses (approximately $3,900 per term).

• One full TA position is equivalent to 10 hours/week over 13 weeks of the term.

• Full-time graduate students may not accept more than 10 hours of employment per week.

• TAs should be present at UW from the start date of the term to the date of completing the marking the final exam.

• If not, the TA contract may be cancelled.

7. Scholarships Faculty of Engineering/UW Merit Scholarships are

awarded by the Department. • Available to domestic and international students. • Students must maintain a minimum 80% overall average. • No Incomplete grades • Scholarships are applied against the students tuition. Scholarships are not eligible to those students

• who have a probationary or transitional condition, • who are part-time or inactive, are in the Coop program • No transfer students for MMSc program from other Depts.

7. Department Awards Fraser Research Award (approximately $1,000)

• Open to Master’s and Ph.D. students for research paper. • Students must be registered as an MSCI students in one of

the previous three terms. Donald J. Clough Memorial Award (approx. $300)

• Awarded to (domestic and international) Master’s students. • Students must be enrolled in the first year. El Gabbani Award (approx. $750)

• Awarded to (international) Master’s students only.

7. MSCI Graduate Research Scholarship It is targeted to MMSc students who are interested

in transferring to the MASc program. • The selection process is based on academic performance

during the Fall 2014 and/or Winter 2015 terms. • Successful applicants are expected to have achieved an

average above 80%. • $4,000 is awarded evenly over 3 terms, conditional on

students’ finding a thesis supervisor. MSCI TA Awards

• One award per term is given to an excellent TA.

7. International Student Award Requirements

• International students (with valid study permit) who maintain full time student status.

• Students should meet the academic progress requirements of the program.

• Students are not receiving external awards or sponsorships.

Amount • MASc students: $1,800 per term (maximum of 6 terms). • Doctoral students: $3,600 per term (maximum of 9 terms).

7. Graduate Studies Bursary and Award It is open to all students who are OSAP eligible, that

is Canadian and permanent residents. Minimal money are available for International

students. • Check Millennium Graduate Bursary Application on

7. Tri Council and OGS Scholarships They are major federal and provincial scholarships.

• NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, OGS To learn about eligibility criteria and application

process, attend the scholarship information session. September 15th-4:00 to 5:30pm OR September 18th-5:00 to 6:30pm (Humanities

Theatre). See Department website for more details. • These sessions are geared towards MASc and Doctoral

students who have a minimum 80% average.

8. Graduate students email list The department UW administrative offices will use

your “@uwaterloo.ca” email account. • Most correspondence to students from the Department

and University will be through email. • It is your responsibility to read your emails and on a

• Kathy Tytko (Department secretary, CHP 4309) is responsible for assigning office space to MASc/Ph.D. students.

• Office space is not guaranteed and it may be taken back at any time.(NOTE: You must complete on-line mandatory safety training prior to receiving your key permit.)

Be respectful of university space, departmental computer equipment and your office mates. • Student mailboxes are located in CPH 4312. Your mail is sorted

alphabetically by last name. • For access to the TA Printer and Copier, see Kathy Tytko.
