Because they can be placed in cow flow areas, management rails simplify animal selection and restraint. Front pipes position heads and a rail in the rear restrains movement. Cows are positioned herringbone-style, allowing for rectal ex- aminations, breeding or injections. Management rails are most useful when a small number of cows requiring treatment can be sorted as they leave the milking parlour. Cows not requir- ing restraint are free to return to the feed bunk or free stalls.
