The TIM processes the collected dataand displays the parameters to the ope-rator, on which he or she should act. TheTIM can also perform more detailed ana-lyses of the individual cow, groups ofcows and the entire herd. First-class milkand healthy cows result from TIM dataand first-class milking processes.

SAC has developed the IDC and TouchScreenapplications to allow the milker easy accessto the data he needs, even during the mil-king process. He can access analyses atPC level. If a PC crashes, operational dairymanagement will be processed by the cen-tral LCU computer. SAC TIM is a reliablesystem and better for the cow, the milk andthe milker.

Communication - the choice

"If there's anything we can do for thegood of the cow, the milk and the milker,we'll do it!"Svend Aage Christensen founded SAC in1938. His motto has been the company'sguiding star ever since; from the invention ofthe KALVO bucket milking machine, a simplestroke of genius, to tie-up stalls, milking stal-ls, rotary parlours, milking robots and inte-grated management systems (MDS).

As a full-line supplier of milking systems, youcan rest assured that SAC can supply exact-ly the right milking system to meet your spe-cific needs. You can also choose how youwish to communicate with the TIM dairymanagement system. The SAC wireless bussystem allows you to choose the optimalsolution to match your particular parloursystem.

It is important that the data from the milkingparlour is relevant and that the operatorknows precisely when to react. In the MDSdairy management system, the devices inthe milking parlour – the IDC, Saccomatickeyboard and touch screen computer – arespecially designed to give clear visual alarmsignals when the operator is required to act.

On the PC located outside the milking par-lour in the farm office, it is possible to confi-

gure any number of attention lists with datarelating to cow records, milking, feeding, activity, conductivity, reproduction status, ani-mal health, etc.

You can chose precisely the parameters youwish to see and can adjust the sensitivity ofalarm lists.

The IDC provides you with the datayou should act on here and now

The PC ensures that you know everything you need to know about

"If there's anything we can do for thegood of the cow, the milk and the mil-ker, we'll do it!"Svend Aage Christensen founded SAC in1938. His motto has been the company'sguiding star ever since; from the inventionof the KALVO bucket milking machine, asimple stroke of genius, to tie-up stalls, milking stalls, rotary parlours, milkingrobots – and advanced cyberspace devi-ces, such as the SAC Glasses.

Our first step on the road to making dataaccessible to the operator was to introdu-ce a touch screen computer. The touchscreen computer gives the operator anoverview so that milking is fast, efficientand hygienic. But there was still somet-hing missing. We needed a clever way toensure that the operator has the data heneeds wherever he is.

SAC Glasses are a new and useful offer tothe milk farmer who has a large herd andmany milkers. As you approach a newcow for preparation, the glasses showyou if there is a problem you need toaddress; milk separation, three-teated,cow separation, mastitis, etc. You see thedata in the glasses, right before youreyes, as you approach the cow and areready to start the milking process.

SAC Glasses are cyberspace glasseswhich make life easier for the milker. When you approach the next cow, theSAC Glasses capture the cow's data via aQR code and, if there is anything youneed to know, the cow's status datacomes up automatically – before youreyes – as you prepare her for milking.

SAC Glasses help to ensure that no peni-cillin enters the milk tank, three-teatersare milked correctly, cows which have trig-gered a conductivity alarm are tested, andmilk samples are taken. You also ensurethat the heat alarm is OK and can sepa-rate individual animals from the herd, ifnecessary. - SAC makes life simpler.

It is now technically possible to project data as if through a pair of

spectacles. We jumped at the oppor-tunity to use this technology and giveour customers the chance to try it out

Our touch screen solution isspecially designed to createan overview of the milkingparlour. You can connect upto four CCTV cameras tomonitor e.g. the collectionarea, rotary exit, separationbox or elsewhere

And, of course, you canmonitor all of this from another PC when you areaway from the milking parlour.

SAC Glasses give the ope-rator the data he needsabout the cow being milked:Is she a three-teater, is sheon heat, does she havemastitis, etc.?

"If there's anything we can do for thegood of the cow, the milk and the milker,we'll do it!"Svend Aage Christensen founded SAC in1938. His motto has been the company'sguiding star ever since, including wheneverSAC produces new products.

The IDC milking place control device is ashining example of this.

A primary function of the IDC milking placecontrol device is to record milk quantities inaccordance with ICAR guidelines. Milkflows through the measurement chamber, which has no mechanical or moving parts. This simple construction is extremely reliab-le, and simple and easy to service.

Like UNICO, the IDC milking place controldevice is a simple mechanical device,

Sensor - milk quantities..

which has a minimal number of movingparts in the areas of the device throughwhich the milk must flow. The milk is there-fore handled with great care and there is astable vacuum between the milk set andthe udders.

The IDC milking place device is modular. An IDC2 device which measures to an

accuracy of +/- 5% can be upgraded to anIDC3 which measures to an accuracy of +/-2% and the upgrade requires no replace-ment parts. The modular design means thatthe measuring unit can be removed fromthe upper part of the IDC device and fittedunder the cattle floor in a rotary milking par-lour. The display remains conveniently pla-ced at eye level.

Milk quantity recording and a num-ber of other functions are integralparts of the IDC milking place con-trol device, which means that thepatented IDC device is second tonone on the world market

The IDC measuring unit, electronicparts and display can be separated sothat the IDC display is visible at alltimes even when the measuring cupis fitted at a high level in a middle- orlow-lying external rotary parlour

MDS Saccomatic IDC3 measures at such accuracy

that it is ICAR-approved

During milking, the IDC devicedisplays the quantity of milk mil-ked, peak flow, current flow andaverage flow. The device canalso display the cow's letdowncurve

In tie-up stalls, the IDC PowerSupply collects the data fromthe individual IDC milkingmachines when they are con-nected for recharging.

The milk quantity from theindividual IDCs and the totalquantity milked can be readoff when they are connectedfor recharging

"If there's anything we can do for thegood of the cow, the milk and the milker,we'll do it!"Svend Aage Christensen founded SAC in1938. His motto has been the company'sguiding star ever since, including whenSAC produces new products. Integratingconductivity and temperature measurementinto the IDC milking place device was there-fore a natural step for us to take.

Conductivity measurements are taken tomonitor if the cow is likely to develop masti-tis. This method is generally used to gene-rate an early warning before a visible chan-ge in the milk is registered. The benefit ofusing the system is that the cow receivesearly treatment, limiting the extent of dama-ge to the udder compared to treatment at alater stage.

Sensors - conductivity an

MDS brochure GB 2014 07/11/14 10:29 Side 12

The IDC measures conductivity in twoways, by measuring either total milk flow ormilk per gland. Each method has advanta-ges and disadvantages. It is up to you tochoose. Measuring at gland level is veryaccurate but depends on a cable betweenthe unit and the IDC, Measuring total milkflow is less accurate but obviates the needfor a cable.

The IDC temperature measurement functionis connected with the use of the SAC masti-tis unit, which measures the temperatureinside the device to +/- 0.1 °C accuracy. The measurements are sent via a cableconnection to the IDC, which has an LEDand visual alarm display. The cable is a wearing part which can easi-ly be replaced if it is trodden on.

If you require a simple solution towarn of an imminent threat ofmastitis, the IDC measuring cupcan send the data to the PC togenerate analysis and alarm lists

The data is stored in the mastitisunit and transmitted to the PC,

where it can be used to separatecows whose condition has trigge-red a temperature or conductivity

alarm

If there is an imbalance in theudder, the alarm on the mastitisunit with its four measuring cellsis triggered and registered onthe IDC. The cow's temperatureis measured in the same way.An alarm is triggered immediate-ly if the cow's temperature ishigh. The alarm is a visual signal– 5 LEDs on the cow's IDC

The four measuring cells in the masti-tis unit are designed as partly enclo-sed cells which are always filled with

milk, so that they measure accuratelyregardless of the angle of the milkingdevice and any air ingress. When theflow of milk from a gland is less than

about 70 g/min, the unit stops measuring from that gland

Any reliable dairy management system hasto have a reliable check on the cow's identi-ty. The SAC system receives a clear signalof the cow's identity via its excellent anten-na system. At SAC, we have done ourutmost to create a system that is flexibleenough to meet the needs of any dairy farmoperation. Flexibility is the cornerstonewhether you use the SAC precision ID andactivity sensors, electronic ear tags or acombination specifically adapted to meetindividual herd needs.

The SAC system is supplied with an anten-na system, specially developed to handleboth full-duplex and half-duplex technologi-es, so that both types of ear tags availableon the market can be used. To achieve per-fect ID registration, we also offer Tiris collartransponders and a combined solutionmonitoring both ID and activity from ourMRS collar or leg transponders.

Identification & activity...

MDS brochure GB 2014 07/11/14 10:30 Side 14

The MRS ID+ activity sensor collar caneasily be transferred from one cow to anot-her. We can also supply a variant which fitson the cow's leg as research has shownthat this type of sensor results in clearestsignals of high activity. To ensure preciseidentification of cows showing high levels ofactivity, the MRS device measures andgathers a total of 15 sequences per day sothat even a cow which shows weak heatsigns is reliably identified.

Data from the MRS is transferred to themanagement system at milking time so thatinsemination can be made at the mostfavourable time. Research has shown thatdairy farm finances can be optimised if thecow is impregnated with the shortest possi-ble open period. The way to ensure that thisis the case is to use an efficient systemwhich informs the milker in good time thatthe cow is in heat.

The image shows a regular wall-mounted antenna used at the milkingparlour entrance. This antenna canbe used in combination with a floorantenna, which reads off activityrecorded on an MRS collar or legsensor

To locate cows that are in heat, itis important to have an effectivelocation system and to ensurethat cows are inseminated in duetime and that the open period isreduced to a minimum

This is a simple method by whichto ensure that the stalls are filledwith calves and that the farm iseconomically viable

The MRS sensor sends data aboutthe cow's activity to the manage-ment system, which analyses whichof the animals are probably in heat.Cows in heat are separated from theherd and the system produces a listof cows to be inseminated

SAC works closely with a number of researchcenters and universities around the world toget the best possible knowledge of the milkingmachine's influence on cow milking and milk.Through this cooperation, we have seen theneed for specially designed equipment forresearch stalls, also equipment which is tar-geting towards researching food, health, milkproduction and reproduction.

SAC RIC stall is a system that is designed todetermine exactly what the cow is fed andhow much to feed the cows actually consume. We are talking about all kinds of food, fromroughage of concentrate to water intake. Inthis way, the researcher knows exactly whatthe animals eat. In preliminary experiments, itmay be appropriate to screen a large numberof different feed compositions on memoriesbut many animal groups.

Where SAC RIC stall systems are to be found:•• NL – WUR ASG Dairy campus•• DE – FAL Braunschweig•• DK - Aarhus University•• USA – Wisconsin University•• CA - University of Guelph •• NZ - Ruminant Methane Measurement Centre•• FR – INRA Tours•• And many more
