Module TwoModuleTwo:.ContinuesLeadership pitfalls!!! Did You Recognized Them? Avoid Them Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 36. Leadership pitfalls to avoidAs we strive to build and develop our leadership skills inpeoples management, there are so many practices andattitudes we must give away. This will not only bring anadded value to our organization but we will find morepersonal enjoyment in our work as we proactivelymanage our career.Below are some of the most common deadliest sinsleaders and managers commit in the excess of exercisingtheir authority and powers over their followers people. To cultivate the needed peoples management skillsrequired for your continue success in your managementand leadership career, you must learn to depart fromthese acts.Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 37. Leadership pitfalls to avoid* Publicly rebuke and embarrass a follower in front of thewhole team. If for anything or reason, a leader must haveconventional wisdom to understand that the number one killermove, is to publicly embarrass a team member in front ofeveryone. It destroys a teams faith in you as a leader and createsfear rather than respect. If a follower is wrong in his conduct thenseek to address and correct their attitude and behavior privately. The whole team will respect you for this. It will show that even ifthey do wrong you still love them and value their dignity andintegrity as unique individuals.* Be suspicious of your followers. The worst thing you can do as aleader is to distrust your people. If you do not trust your followers peoplesoon they will pick it up and before you know it the wholeorganization is being run by suspicion and distrust. You have tosow seeds of trust and comradeship in your organization if you areto lead effectively. Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 38. Leadership pitfalls to avoid* Criticize all the time. Criticism has never proven to be the best way of motivating a team. I have seen many leaders criticize their subordinates with the hope of getting better results. They have always been disappointed. For they discovered that their followers went on to do the same thing they had criticized them about and told them to stop. This was not because their followers wanted to spite them or disrespect them. The school of psychological thought has scientifically proven that if you want to create behavioural change in anyone instead of telling them to stop doing what you do not like them to do, tell them what you want them to do.* Say one thing and mean something else. One of the key attributesof every leader is that a leader is a person who keeps their word. Aleader is someone whose word means something. They will keep theirword even if it costs them something or is painful. Their word is theirbond. A poor leader is one who when they say something they do notstick to it.Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 39. Leadership pitfalls to avoid* Believe you know it all. You do not need help from anyone. It isonly a foolish leader who believes they know it all and do not needhelp from any one. All the greatest leaders I know in history hadmentors. You need the advise and wisdom of those who have beenthere before and seen it all. You will save yourself time, energy andresources by listening to the coaching of those who have beenthere before you.* Be secretive about your dealings and conduct as a leader. The best way to earn the respect and trust of every one of yourfollowers is to live your life before them. Be honest and open withthem. Share with them your strengths and weaknesses and you willbe amazed to realize they have so much they want to share withyou. It starts with you taking the first step of opening up tothem then they open up to you. That is how effective strongteams and organizations are made. Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 40. Leadership pitfalls to avoid Demand respect. After all you are the boss. Respect is earned andnot demanded. Only dictators demand respect. Real leadersearn respect. They earn their followers admiration and respect byhow they conduct themselves and by how accountable they are totheir followers about their organizations activities and vision. Others includes; blame, defensiveness, contempt andstonewalling. Where there is blame, we have a leader that does nottake responsibility for her actions and puts others down. A leader whois defensive is unable to hear valuable feedback and learn from theperspectives and opinions of others. Contempt and contemptuousbehavior destroy morale and model a value of disrespect in theorganization. And finally, stonewalling. Stonewalling is one of themost effective tools at destroying the leadership relationship. A leaderrelationshipwho stonewalls will find himself isolated, unapproachable, andperceived as lacking in humanness.Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 41. Module ThreeManagement!!! What is Management?Who are Management? What are their Roles?Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 42. managementManagement in practical perspectives entailsthe application of varied leadership skills by agroup of people in an efforts directed towardsthe actualization and attainment of organizationset goals and objectives by adequatelymanaging her human, financial and materialsresources through effective and efficientplanning, organizing, leading, and coordinatingactivities to achieve the outlined visions andgoals of the organization. It is the act of makingpeople more effective and productive than theywould have been without you. Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 43. managementTo most employees, the term "management"probably means the group of people (executives andother managers) who are primarily responsible formaking decisions in the organization. In a nonprofit, the term "management" might refer to all or any ofthe activities of the board, executive director and/orprogram directors. However, some writers, teachers and practitionersassert that, management needs to focus more onleadership skills, e.g., establishing vision andgoals, communicating the vision and goals, andguiding others to accomplish them.Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 44. Leadership - managementThey also assert that leadership must be morefacilitative, participative and empowering in howvisions and goals are established and carried out.Another common view is that "management" isgetting things done through others. Yet anotherview, asserts that the job of management is tosupport employees efforts to be fully productivemembers of the organizations and citizens of thecommunity. Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 45. Leadership - managementNowadays, the concept of Management Vs Leadershipis growing and changing. Organization are developingflatter structure and concentrating decision makingdownward to teams and employees. Employees giveauthentic dedication; seek solutions and become partnersrather than followers.Organizations are expecting more than keen managersand great leaders. They are looking for executives whocan concurrently lead and manage. Executives are people managewho lead, build visions and strategies, mastermindoperations and allocate resources effectively. Theycascade and share strategies and plans with all structuresand teams, distributing power and bringing out leadershipat much deeper levels.Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 46. Overlapping functions of managementThe four major functions ofManagement in anorganization are integratedand overlapped throughoutPlanning Organizingthe organization. The application of effectiveand efficient leadership Managementskills and techniques arethe bedrock of success ofthis process in anorganization which willresult in greaterLeadingproductivity as better Coordinatingperformance are& Controllingencouraged and employeesmotivated. Module ThreeModuleThree:.Continues Leadership Model!!! What does it mean?Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 49. Leadership modelsLeadership model is a behavioral theory that isused to determine the best style of leadershipbehaviour that is most appropriate to individualleader with reference to the developmental levelsof the leaders subordinates. The situational perspective of leadership model isbased on the amount of direction (task behaviour)and socio-emotional support (relationshipbehaviour) a leader must provide to thesubordinates given the situation and the "level ofmaturity" of the followers. Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 50. Leadership modelsTask behaviour is the extent to which the leader engages inspelling out the duties and responsibilities to an individual orgroup. This behaviour includes telling people what to do, howto do it, when to do it, where to do it, and whos to do it. Intask behaviour the leader engages in one-waycommunication.Relationship behaviour is the extent to which the leaderengages in two-way or multi-way communications. Thisincludes listening, facilitating, and supportive behaviours. Inrelationship behaviour the leader engages in two-waycommunication by providing socio-emotional support. Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 51. Leadership ModelMaturity is the willingness and ability of a person to takeresponsibility for directing his or her own behaviour. People tend tohave varying degrees of maturity, depending on the specific task, function, or objective that a leader is attempting to accomplishthrough their efforts. The task-motivated style leader experiences pride and satisfactionin the task accomplishment for the organization, while therelationship-motivated style seeks to build interpersonal relationsand extend extra help for the team development in theorganization. The key situational variable, when determining the appropriateleadership style, is the readiness or developmental level of theleaders subordinates.Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 52. Leadership stylesThe leadership behavioural mode recognizefour leadership styles.Leadership Styles;1. Directing Leadership Style2. Coaching Leadership Style3. Supporting Leadership Style4. Delegating Leadership Style Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 53. Leadership stylesDirectingCoaching Leadership StylesDelegatingSupportingFelcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 54. Leadership stylesDirecting: The leader provides clear instructions andspecific direction. This style is best matched with a lowfollower readiness level.Coaching: The leader encourages two-waycommunication and helps build confidence andmotivation on the part of the employee, although theleader still has responsibility and controls decisionmaking. Selling style is best matched with a moderatefollower readiness level.Supporting: With this style, the leader and followersshare decision making and no longer need or expect therelationship to be directive. Participating style is bestmatched with a moderate follower readiness level.Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 55. Leadership stylesDelegating: This style is appropriate for leaders whosefollowers are ready to accomplish a particular task and areboth competent and motivated to take full responsibility.Delegating style is best matched with a high follower readinesslevel. To determine the appropriate leadership style to use in a givensituation, the leader must first determine the maturity level ofthe followers in relation to the specific task that the leader isattempting to accomplish through the effort of the followers. As the level of followers maturity increases, the leader shouldbegin to reduce his or her task behaviour and increaserelationship behaviour until the followers reach a moderatelevel of maturity. As the followers begin to move into an aboveaverage level of maturity, the leader should decrease not onlytask behaviour but also relationship behaviour. Once thematurity level is identified, the appropriate leadership style canbe determined. Felcotech Consulting, Warri Delta State 56.
