THE METHODOLOGY CONSISTS OF:

• A competency framework defining ten career management competencies important in managing one’s career

• A competency checklist for practitioners which can be used as a support tool in the guidance process

‘Career management skills play a decisive role inempowering people to become involved in shaping theirlearning, training and integration pathways and theircareers’ (Council Resolution on better integratinglifelong guidance into lifelong learning strategies, Nov2008. Council of the European Union).

According to Cedefop in their review of lifelong guidanceacross Europe (2011), Career management skills helppeople to identify their existing skills and explore thelearning goals necessary to improve their employabilityand social inclusion. Career Management skills aretherefore essential for assisting people to achieve theirpotential and to empower them in an ever changinglabour market.

There are many definitions of Career Management Skillsused in literature but the Manage Your Career methodhas adopted a definition proposed by member states. ‘Career Management skills refer to a whole range ofcompetences which provide structured ways forindividuals and groups to gather, analyse, synthesiseand organise self, educational and occupationalinformation as well as the skills to make and implementdecisions and transitions.’ (Sultana, 2009a).

Member states have also been encouraged to assistprofessionals working in lifelong guidance and VocationalEducation and Training (VET) to acquire the necessaryskills to support their client groups to develop and applyCareer Management Skills in periods of transition andthroughout their working lives. (Lifelong guidance acrossEurope; reviewing policy progress and future prospects,2011)

5. WHAT CLIENT GROUPS WILL IT WORK BEST WITH:

This methodology has been developed specifically forguidance practitioners working with disadvantaged jobseekers but has the potential to be used with all jobseekers.

The Bruges Communiqué (2010) calls for EU memberstates to ‘ensure (at national levels) that keycompetences and career management skills areadequately integrated in Initial Vocational Education andTraining curricula and that they can be acquired throughtraining opportunities in Continuing Vocational Educationand Training’.

The competencies identified in the Manage Your Careermethodology are important for all workers across Europeto develop. The Manage Your Career training thereforecould be adapted to meet the needs of guidancepractitioners working with a variety of job seekers in bothinitial and continuing Vocational Education and Training.
