INTRODUCTION.

The Man-Machine Interface, the fusion of two extraordinary powers-human intellect and dexterous machines. This paper explores the realm of the control of humans over machine and vice-versa. Vice-Versa? Extraordinary isn’t it? As this interface thins, the future is too seeing, astounding development in this field.

Man-Machine Interface (MMI) refers to the graphical, textual and auditory information the machine presents to the user, and the control sequences the user employs to control the machine. ……DEFINATION

The examples of MMI can be simple daily life objects like,the dash board of a car,refrigerator’s defrost buttons,our television and ofcourse the personal computer.More advanced examples can be robots,auditory and visual systems,control panels,neuroprosthetics etc.

Historically MMI can be catalogued as the human attempt to “humanize” machines to make them more useful.The famous book on the first semi human “Frankstein”,explored the realms of the interaction of man and the machine.

The basic concept of man-machine relation lies in the readability of the interface. This implies the ability of the human brain to interpret and command the machine action.

TYPES OF INTERFACES.

There are mainly two categories:1. Non Responsive.2. Responsive.

1. Non Responsive: The interface only displays the output from the machine but does not take input from the user.

2. Responsive: It displays the output as well responds to the input from the user.

INTERFACE IN DEFENCE

Brain computer interaction (BCI), have developed interfaces which can directly control machines by the brain. The BCI experiment carried out on monkeys have established that monkeys could quickly achieve voluntary control over the firing rate of individual neurons in primary motor cortex.It has been possible to move the actuators by sensory reflexes in monkeys.

The movie “Matrix” seen from the MMI perspective,happens to be one of the most influential movies of our times.In the movie the protagonist Neo is a cyborg with man-machine integration.Matrix is a story of people who are born and raised within pods repleat with electronic parts.Their entire nervous system is wired from head to foot.They have massive amounts of electronics in their brain that allow a virtual reality simulation. IMPORTANCE: The Matrix peeks into the future of man and machine interaction.It puts up a very important question,”Will machines take over men?”.The current advances in nanotechnology may solve the problem of microprocessors matching the reflex speed of nervous system.The HUMAN GENOME PROJECT further advances prospects in this field.

APPLICATIONS

Neuroprosthetics is an area of neuroscience concerned with neural prostheses, that is, artificial devices used to replace or improve the function of an impaired nervous systemOne of the prominent goals in neuroprosthetics is a visual supplement, noting roughly 95% of all people considered 'blind' suffer significant impairment but have some capability (for example, seeing some sort of blur) - only about 5% of 'blind' people are totally blindWhen specific areas of the brain were stimulated in blind volunteers, all reported "seeing" phosphenes that corresponded to where they would have appeared in space. However, experiments were discontinued because of the uncomfortably high currents required for stimulation on the surface of the brain.

VISUAL IMPLANT

Brain implants, often referred to as neural implants, are technological devices that connect directly to a biological subject's brain - usually placed on the surface of the brain, or attached to the brain's cortex. A common purpose of modern brain implants and the focus of much current research is establishing a biomedical prosthesis circumventing areas in the brain, which became dysfunctional after a stroke or other head injuries.

USER INTERFACE:

The user interface is the aggregate of means by which people (the users) interact with a particular machine, device, computer program or other complex tool (the system). The user interface provides means of:

1.Input, allowing the users to manipulate the system

2.Output, allowing the system to produce the effects of the users' manipulation.

COMPUTER PANEL

To work with a system, the users need to be able to control the system and assess the state of the system. For example, when driving an automobile, the driver uses the steering wheel to control the direction of the vehicle, and the accelerator pedal, brake pedal and gearstick to control the speed of the vehicle. The driver perceives the position of the vehicle by looking through the windscreen and exact speed of the vehicle by reading the speedometer. The user interface of the automobile is on the whole composed of the instruments the driver can use to accomplish the tasks of driving and maintaining the automobile.

The term user interface is often used in the context of computer systems and electronic devices. The user interface of a mechanical system, a vehicle or an industrial installation is often referred to as the human-machine interface (HMI).

ROBOTICS:A robot may act under the direct control of a human (eg. the robotic arm of the space shuttle) or autonomously under the control of a programmed computer.The MMI in robotics pertains to development of hmanoid robots which may gain more social access n the future.The fusion of man and machine looks clearly in robots.

FUTURE INTERFACE:MICROBES RUN MACHINES

It's the rise of the machines, literally. Japanese scientists have got the first microscopic mechanical devices to successfully incorporate living microbes together with inorganic parts by yoking bacteria to power rotary motors. This pear-shaped microbe, a millionth of a meter long, can glide over surfaces at up to seven-tenths of an inch an hour. Translated to a six-foot-tall runner, this roughly equates to 20 mph. The researchers built circular pathways coated with sugary proteins, which the microbe needs to stick to in order to glide over surfaces. This shows possible biological control over machines, thus creating a new interface known as BIOLOGICAL CONTROL INTERFACE.

CONCLUSION

The understanding of the MMI is important for the continued development of mankind. For instance, the cruise control systems have made cars safer, efficient and faster. Commonly used interface like displays of cell phones may give way to direct interaction between the human minds. Rapid development in Programmable Logic Control (PLC), has improved the production rate of industries. Robotics is another field which is the real interfusion of the man and the machine. After the advancements seen in the field of nanotechnology, chemical and biological interfaces are in great possibility.Nanomotors have already been developed by a group of scientists (JAPAN).Man Machine Interface is thinning, and humans are walking he border, what will happen?The answer lies in the future.
