1 GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 Safety Precautions
All persons involved in the transport, installation, operation,
maintenance and repair of this system must have read this
user manual carefully.
The system and its accessories are in accordance with the
current state of safety technology at the time of delivery. Owing
to the work processes involved, however, there may be parts
of the system and its peripherals which cannot be given opti-mum protection without an unreasonable reduction in function
and usability.
This is why we request you to observe the following
safety precautions without fail!
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONSWork on this system and its peripherals must only be per-
formed by qualified and/or trained staff. Other persons must be
kept away.
This manual shall be permanently available to the supervisory,
operating, and maintenance staff for reference.
Improper use may endanger life and limb, the system and
connected equipment, as well as the efficient functioning of thesystem. This is why you are allowed to employ the instrument
only to the purpose it has been designed for by its manufac-turer.
Always use the appropriate tools for any operation on the sys-
tem and for running it and keep your tools in good repair.
Permanently supervise the observance of all safety instruc-
tions during operation and maintenance.

Only authorised persons with sufficient expertise are allowed to
operate the device.
Make sure the instrument and its peripherals are in good work-
ing order when they are put into operation.
Never use any foreign parts on the instrument and its periph-
erals, otherwise the necessary degree of safety cannot be en-
sured. Do not carry out any operation that may jeopardise the
safety of the instrument.
The user is required to immediately report any change in the
system to the supervisor in charge.
The operator is required to shut the equipment down withoutdelay whenever some functional disorder occurs that may
jeopardise the safety of persons. The instrument must not be
put into operation again unless the fault has been repaired.
ELECTROTECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS
Connect the instrument and all its accessories according to in-
structions and regulations. Make sure the relevant regulations
such as EN, DIN, VDE or national standards, respectively, are
observed.
Every repair or maintenance operation shall be carried out only
after the equipment has been switched off (is in a dead state)
and only by an electrotechnical expert. A person is regarded
an electrotechnical expert when due to his or her training, knowledge, and experience as well as knowledge of relevant
regulations he or she is able to assess the operations to be
carried out and detect any possible risk.

2 TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
2.1 Application
The length of a cable can be measured easily and fast by
means of a reflectometer provided there are no sleeves, junc-
tion boxes, or multiple ends in the path of the cable. This is
only the case, however, when both ends of the cable under
test have been disconnected.
When measurements have to be taken in completely installedcable networks there is often no chance to assign the incoming
reflections of the test pulse to a specific test point in the cable
network since each of the sleeves, junction points, and ends
generates a test pulse reflection of its own.
Our 'Echo Pulser' is the appropriate remedy in this situation. It
is connected to the end of the cable section under test. The
test point will now clearly stand out on the display of the reflec-tometer thus allowing the length of the cable section under test
to be determined without delay.
The 'Echo Pulser' can be applied to a network under mains
voltage without the need to use additional accessories.

2.4 Basic Function
When the length of a cable segment within a completely in-stalled and ramified cable network shall be measured, a reflec-
tometer such as type Teleflex M, easyflex, or miniflex HV is
connected to one end of the segment under test. The
'Echo Pulser' is connected to the other end of the cable seg-
ment. You need not cut any existing electrical connections, e.g.
in junction boxes. The 'Echo Pulser' alternates between open-
circuit and short-circuit conditions at a cycle rate of once per
second. The change in reflectivity at the location of the'Echo Pulser' can easily be detected on the display of the re-
flectometer. Any other reflections caused by junctions or ends
of cables branching off will remain unchanged, on the other
hand.
Die electrical circuitry of the 'Echo Pulser' is so designed that
the short-circuit condition is only effective for the test pulse of
the reflectometer but not for voltage at power-line frequency ordc voltage. When the reflectometer, too is equipped with a
blocking filter circuit to keep off the mains voltage, length
measurements can be taken without the need to disconnect
the cable under test.

3.2 Batteries to be Used
Insert a conventional 9-V battery block (size IEC 6F22 / E
block) to power the Echo Pulser. You have the choice to useeither a primary battery of the Normal / Alkaline type or a re-
chargeable battery of the NiCd / NiMH type.
The battery compartment is located in the rear of the enclo-
sure, it is covered with a sliding lid.
ATTENTION:
Before opening the battery compartment
make sure that the Echo Pulser has been
disconnected from the cable!!!
How to proceed:
Open the battery compartment by shifting the lid down-
wards.
Release the exhausted battery from the contact clip.
Connect a fresh battery with the contact clip. In doing so
make sure that polarity is observed correctly.
Insert the battery into its compartment. In doing so make
sure that the connecting wires of the contact clip are neither
strained nor squeezed.
Close the battery compartment by pushing the lid on till it
engages..
When you want to charge the battery or dispose of a dead bat-
tery, please follow the instructions given in paragraphs 4.1 and
4.2.

3.3 Battery Monitoring
Battery voltage is monitored automatically. The battery condi-
tion can be evaluated by watching the repetition rate of the
pulse which can be heard as a click and seen as a flashing of
LED PULS.
When during operation the supply voltage drops below a speci-
fied minimum, the repetition rate is clearly reduced. You can,
however, still run the Echo Pulser for several hours.
We advise you to exchange the battery immediately should the
supply voltage be below the specified minimum already at the
time the Echo Pulser is switched on.
For values of the pulse repetition rate please refer to para-
graph 2.

3.9 Safety Instructions for Working under Voltage
Please observe the following instructions when working under
voltage:
Tools, utilities, and clothing shall be in line with the relevant
regulations.
Carry out all protective measures such as marking, cover-
ing, or barricading as required by the relevant regulations.
First completely connect the test leads and adapters of the
measuring accessories to the 'Echo Pulser', then make
connection to the cable under voltage.
Make sure the necessary voltage sustaining capability is
ensured when using other adapters or test leads.
Never use a device or accessory item that has been dam-
aged or impermissibly changed.
Further measuring and test equipment such as audio-frequency transmitters or insulation testing equipment mayonly be connected when the maximum permissible voltage isnot exceeded (paragraph 2.2).

4.1 General Information
Use exclusively soft detergents for plastics when you remove
soiling from the surface of the enclosure or the front panel. We
advise you to use a slightly moistened soft duster or a sponge
for cleaning.
ATTENTION:
Do not immerse the enclosure in liquid. Never
apply any chemical agent such as petrol, ace-tone, paint diluent, acid, or alkali.
Please remove the battery from its compartment when you in-
tend not to use the device for a lengthy period of time. Other-
wise you run the risk that the ability to function may be im-
paired due to leakage of the battery.
Please dispose of your dead primary cells and rechargeable
batteries according to regulations in an environmentally friendly
way.
4.2 How to Charge a Rechargeable Battery
When you use a rechargeable battery, please remove it from
the device for charging and use a conventional charging de-
vice. Please observe the instructions of the battery and
charger manufacturers without fail.
