Integrating ERPsim and SAP® into the COBcurriculum

    Thursday November 1, 2018 @ 11:00 am @ BUS 310

Felix BollouAssistant Professor of Computer Information Systems

    College of BusinessFerris State University

Synopsis: As more and more data travel through the wire, there is increasing demands for fasteranalytics to master the data and integrate it for accurate business decision making. This situation hasbrought some of the important decision making tasks down to the level of the middle managers.Recent research claims that over 64% of middle managers are being asked to run some sort ofadvanced and complex queries and further organize the data to help in the business decision makingprocess. This assignment can be stressful if one is not prepared and had no prior knowledge of analyticsand data processing in a fast-paced environment. For decades, business schools have used simulation tools to give their graduates a near real life flavorof the subjects they are learning. These simulations’ goal is to equip new graduates with the tools thatwould help mitigate with the above situation. In this session, we are going to experience ERPsim in action and discuss how to integrate the tool in ourcourses.ERPsim is a unique business simulation technology developed at HEC Montréal that enables thesimulation of near-real-life business contexts of large corporate information systems. There are othersimulation games which allow you to take a stra- tegic view of an enterprise, but ERPsim is closelycoupled with SAP® so participants have to use a real ERP system like they would in a real context.ERPsim Development Team has trained over 1000 instructors worldwide to use simulation games forteaching ERP concepts to IT professionals and executives. These instructors are faculty members andinstructors at universities and colleges, teaching ERP systems in fields such as Business, ManagementInformation System, Computer Science, Operations Management and Industrial Engineering. So far,ERPsim has been used in more than 170 universities worldwide. Note: Anyone with a disability that needs special accommodations to attend this event should contact (231)591-3166 at least 72 hours in advance.

Teach Technology, Teach Democracy There is more to the digital divide than simple ideas of those with technology and those without (DiMaggio, P. & Hargittai,E., 2001; Warschauer, 2003), or conceptions of Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants (Prensky, 2001).  If those of us ineducation do not teach how technology is used to communicate information, we inadvertently become assistants to theemergence of a digital variation of Jim Crow laws:  Those who understand how to critically interpret digitally presenteddata, and those who don’t.

Teach data visualization.Far more than the pie charts, line graphs, and bar charts of years gone by, today’s data visualizations are often artfullycreated and possibly interactive.  The old adage, “There are three kinds of lies:  Lies, damn lies, and statistics” gets new lifewhen infographics can be easily used for gerrymandering of ideas.

List of 38 data visualization toolsExamples of lessons related to voting using data visualization tools

Teach digital storytelling. It’s the new language of advocacy.  Beyond the old “who, what, where, and why” of journalism, those who want to beheard also need to have a sense of the visual and auditory.  What does truth in photojournalism now mean when softwarenow supports even elementary aged children editing images and videos?  Is a written editorial about a societal wrong as

  • powerful now as a video showing it captured via cell phone and gone viral on YouTube?

    Screencapture and Digital Storytelling Resources

Teach social media.Although we still have newspapers and televised news, gone are the days when major cities would have two papers--oneleaning to the right, and one to the left.  Today’s social media networks are an integral part of politics and the news--ofteninteractive in nature, with TV hosts fielding questions from Facebook and Twitter during live interviews.  With socialmedia, anyone can quickly and easily comment directly to the famous and powerful--and often get replies!

Example assignment using social media for professional development

Teach search engines and web domains.Just because something’s on the web, it’s true, right?  Well, that depends on who put it there--but how you figure that partout can be a bit complicated.  Beyond basic differences in  .com, .gov, .org, or .edu, there are a number of other factors atplay.  What browser did you use for your search?  You may get different results, depending on the browser’s data analyticsas well as your personal settings for privacy, cookies, location, history, and more.  Are your devices synced?  Your searchengines may be pulling info from those devices as well.  You found an amazingly informative site, but is it true?  Who ownsit?
