  • Malware - definition Malware is software which is designed to gather private information, gain access to a computer, disrupt the normal activity of a computer and/or sell a product.

  • Malware vs. Virus In its strictest definition, the term “malware” includes viruses and Trojans. However, for this presentation, we will address the other forms of malware.

  • Malware – What it can do It can be annoying Cause pop-ups Block websites Slow down your computer

  • Malware – What it can do Some malware can: Turn off your anti-virus and download viruses Lock your files (Ransomware) Keep you off the Internet

  • Malware – What it can do Cost you money When you purchase fake software to take off the fake infections When you pay us to take off the infections

  • Malware – How? How does malware get onto your computer? Generally, malware is from the Internet not email: Via Social Engineering Via Drive by Downloads Via Packaging with other downloads

  • Malware – How? Social Engineering Panic and Fear Act without thinking Fool you into giving up personal information Trick you with false labeling

  • Malware – How? Drive by Downloads Often legitimate sites which have been hacked Install in the background using known software security bugs

  • Malware – How? Packaging with other software Probably largest source of adware You want software which is usually free. When you install it, you also install adware/malware – sometimes in the form of toolbars

  • Malware – How to Avoid It Think before you click Don’t panic Don’t click links in suspicious emails Stay away from porn, gambling and off-brand game sites

  • Malware – How to Avoid It Remove checkmarks which will automatically install extra software Remember… If you have up-to-date anti-virus, you won’t have 100+ viruses, etc. Your computer/router’s IP address is always showing on the Net

  • Malware – How to Avoid It If you encounter a website with malware, don’t click anything (Not “Yes,” not “No,” not the X in the corner. Close the page or shut off your computer, if necessary.
