Dear Parents
MALVERN TIMESSPECIAL EDITION
I am writing to you for the last time in an e-letter, reflecting eclectically on some of
the recent activities at Malvern. Firstly, however, I would like to thank you all for your
support over the past eleven years. Such support has been evident in many ways and
notably recently in your response to the Service held at the Malvern Priory to mark the
end of my tenure at Malvern. My wife, Brigitte, and I were deeply moved by it and by
the response of many pupils, staff, parents and others. We appreciate so much the good
wishes of the wonderful Malvern community as we embark on another challenge in
South Africa. It has been a privilege to play a role in developing the school and Malvern
is well set to go from strength to strength under the leadership of the new Headmaster,
Keith Metcalfe.
We are in the season of Lent and valued the thoughts of our two Lenten Speakers,
James Baron and Simon Austen, soon after half-term as they enriched our lives and
challenged us to grow spiritually.

Lea-Smith Reading Competition
The Lea-Smith Reading competition brought to us, as an
adjudicator, Professor David Punter, Emeritus Professor of
Poetry at the University of Bristol. The FY winner was Oliver Beer
(No.7) who read Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness, whilst the
Remove winner, reading an extract from the Rocky Balboa script,
was Syuzanna Avanesova (EH). The Hundred winner, Ani King,
(No.3) was praised for her reading from Atonement by Ian McEwan.
The Lower Sixth winner was Lucie Fletcher, (No.8), for her
nuanced reading of After Juliet and the Upper Sixth winner was
Hamish Houghton, (SH) with his poignant reading of Stop
Saying I love You. Congratulations to No.3 who won the overall
competition and bore off the most magnificent and valuable
trophy in the school.
Careers and Futures evening
In our Careers and Futures evening, open to all year cohorts in the school, our pupils were introduced to a range of different speakers
from more traditional professions such as Law, Medicine, Finance and Journalism through to areas which are relatively new such as hostage
negotiation. One would hope that there were relatively few career opportunities in the last of these areas, but it is of huge interest and value
for our pupils to know how the job market is evolving.

under the sharp eye of Senior Cadets. Our Duke of Edinburgh Award candidates have braved the most recent storm to carry out their training
in very difficult conditions.

In the Biology Olympiad, an extremely challenging competition,
James Wakefield gained a silver medal, placing him in the top ten
percent of entrants in the UK, whilst Robbie Hardwick achieved
a bronze medal. Well done to Konrad Barbers who achieved a
silver certificate in the UK Linguistics Olympiad.
National Coding Challenge
In the National Coding challenge, Lakshya Joshi, Ani King,
George Kent, James Francis, Basil Marsden-Smedley and
Ben Chen all achieved merit passes, whilst Felix Olschewski and
Paras Ladwa achieved distinctions.

Art Focus
Laetitia WattsLaetitia is looking at portraiture for her GCSE course work.
Initially she was working on some great large-scale charcoal
drawings of dancers and has now turned her attention to
more personal drawings of her classmates, deconstructing
her drawings trying to find a much freer style. These are
looking fantastic so far.

Sporting Snippets
CricketOver half-term, our 1st X1 Cricketers were touring South Africa.
Considering the strength of our opposition, we did well to win
two fixtures against top schools. Josh Baker was our best bowler
and Sean Aggrawal our best batsman.
Cross Country | 132nd LedderOn the Sporting front, we have recently hosted over 3,000 visitors
on our campus for the National Prep Schools Cross Country event;
Malvern is well-known for this throughout the UK and prep school
children come from as far afield as Scotland, the Isle of Man and
the Channel Islands to compete in this annual event. We have
also staged the 132nd Ledder and, once again, the competitive
spirit and determination of participants encapsulated many of
the Malvern Qualities and led to a memorable afternoon. The first
boy home was Lawrence Hooker in a time of 54 minutes and
52 seconds. He was followed by Harry Myddelton and Tom
Doherty, whilst the first girl back was Ariana Davison in 64
minutes and 54 seconds, with Esther Woods and Megan Jones
in hot pursuit. In the girls’ House competition, No.4 finished in
fourth place, with No.6 in second place and the winners were
No.8. In the boys’ competition, No.5 finished third with SH
second. No.2 were the winners. Ultimately, the Ledder is about
so much more than points or trophies; it is a physical challenge
taken on by many and the rewards are there when pupils come
onto the Senior to the applause of fellow-competitors and others
in the school.
In the Junior Race, Tom Birley put in a commanding performance
to win the boys’ event with Edward Carryer coming second and
Archie Bailey third. The first girl home was Harriet Carpenter,
with Chloe MacKellar second and Lily Hutton third.

EquestrianWarmest congratulations go to Otty Thomas who was selected in
Equestrian sports as part of the England Prince Philip Cup Team for
2019. Such national recognition is a tremendous honour for her.
HockeyOur 1st Hockey XI beat Christ College Brecon 6-4 with a hat trick
from Tristan Hubbard,
NetballIn Netball, our 1st team lost narrowly 25-27 to Cheltenham College.
Girls FootballOur Girls 1st Football Team finished their season with a convincing
6-1 victory over Cheltenham College with Vivien Kruse scoring
four goals and being our Player of the Match.
Boys FootballOur Boys’ 1st Team drew 4-4 with a competitive and experienced
Old Malvernians team with two goals from Jonny Asamoah and
one from each of Henry Forbes and Luke Tulacz.
Canoe PoloIn the relatively new sport of Canoe Polo, our A team have finished
second in the league overall which is a very impressive result
against teams which feed the Great Britain squad.
GolfIn Golf our team has won the Area Cup semi-final with a 2-1
win over Cheltenham College, Ally Renton and Marco Garbi
winning 4 and 3 and Izzy Lloyd and Josh Baker winning at the
twentieth hole.
RugbyThere have been two Rugby Sevens tournaments recently:
the U14As reached the final of the tournament at Old Swinford
Hospital with Charles Hoyland, Tom Morison and Frankie
Jefferies excelling, along with Ben Myers, Noah Hanke, Ed
Carryer and Sam Lafferty. In the U16 tournament played at
Stowe, we were up against schools such as Millfield to whom
we narrowly lost. Vansh Ladwa, Joe Randall, Minty Murray,
Jack Yeoward, Harry Sigley, Will Crossland and Louis and Kit
Staley took us through to the final of the Vase Trophy which we
won very narrowly by 22-21 over the Royal Latin School.
RacketsFinally, in Rackets against Cheltenham College, our first pair,
Dan Holland and Gus Stephenson, saw us home to a 3-2 victory,
whilst Myles Holland and Olly Cox won the U15A event 3-1 and
Tommy Boorman and Joel Cox the U14A match 3-0.
All of these results reflect great endeavour on the part of our
pupils who enjoy the huge variety offered by our co-curricular
programme and are proud to represent their school against similar
opposition.
May I wish you everything of the best for future terms and years.
Antony Clark | Headmaster
