Mon 24th JuneA Day OutTransport in own cars. Cost for day £1511.00Guided tour of Brockhampton ChurchRoss-on-Wye HR1 4SDIf you have any interest in architecture, you must visit this church. The building is inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement. This was a brief period between 1890 – 1914 when British designers in the Decorative arts, furniture as well as architecture, made an important contribution to the culture not only of Britain but of the world. Pevsner, the great authority on British heritage, describes Brockhampton as ‘one of the most impressive churches of its date in any country’.Take a picnic or pub lunch at the White Lion, Wilton HR9 6AQ

and 14.30Visit Weston Hall Gardens & Teanear Ross on Wye HR9 7NS.Weston Hall dates back to the 16th century and is surrounded by a 6 acre garden. Over the past 100 years or so, four generations of the Aldrich-Blake family have been enthusiastic stewards of this lovely place. Each generation has left its mark on the house and the gardens. A doorway in the garden, opens into a walled garden with herbaceous borders, vegetables and fruit overlooked by a Millenium folly. A lawn sweeping to the west of the house is surrounded by magnificent cedars as well as other unusual trees and shrubs. This leads to a meadow and orchard with a small lake beyond. The visit includes tea and biscuits.

19.30‘Trench Life in Silhouette’Talk by Jerry Rendell OBE BscLewis Theatre, Malvern College WR14 3DFH.L. Oakley was one of the most talented and prolific silhouette artists of the twentieth century. Despite his fame, he was determined to enlist and play his part in fighting for his country in the First World War. He joined up in the summer of 1914, but continued to create arresting images, including one of the most famous recruiting posters of the day, that was used not only across Britain, but in Australia, South Africa and Canada. He served with the Green Howards and continued throughout his military career to create silhouettes of the front, from famous officers to the men in the trenches, capturing the imagination of those back home and his illustrations became a regular feature alongside the famous cartoonists of the day in ‘The Bystander’ magazine. These quirky, charming and powerful silhouettes show life on the frontline during the Great War in a whole new light. Tickets £10, wine & nibbles included.

Wed 26 June 10.30 and 11.30Council House OpenAvenue Road WR14 3AFAn opportunity to see around the downstairs area, including the Elgar Room used for wedding ceremonies, and the lovely stained glass windows. Sun 30 June10.00 departure from Victoria Park carpark WR14 2JYCycle Ride 10 miles Leader Roger Keeling from U3A Cycle Group

This is a 10 mile circular bike ride aimed at young families. We will ride as a group with an appointed leader and back marker. Part of the ride is on quiet roads or lanes (we will not be riding on main roads) and a few short sections will be off road. The route heads out to Callow End where there is a playground where the children can let off steam and where hopefully we might have refreshments available.

The route is suitable for all children who can ride a bike safely on pavements and quiet lanes. There are no hills on the route. Children will need to show road discipline when riding on the lanes. The ride speed will be determined by the speed of the slowest. This is not a race; we are aiming to get families out on their bikes riding together. In general it will be suitable for children between the ages of 5 and 12. We aim to return by 12.30. The ride will be cancelled in the event of poor weather. Numbers are restricted to 20. An entry form will need to be signed by a parent before setting off and this can be obtained by emailing [email protected] or telephoning 01905 831542If you have any further queries then please email Roger

Exhibitions Sun 30 June – Sat 6 JulyAlabaster into ArtA display by photographs showing the work of Samuel Baldwin to mark the 70th Anniversary of the Friends of Malvern Priory. You can see the monuments created by Samuel Baldwin (died 1645) in churches in Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. Chrys Plumley, an expert on 16C & 17C dress, has photographed many of Baldwin’s sculptures. He considers that the figures are ‘real characters’ and that his work was influenced by the arrival of Huguenot refugees from the Netherlands. This display includes the Knotsford monument in Malvern Priory, dated to around 1618. Mr and Mrs Knotsford lived in the Prior’s lodgings (now replaced by the Abbey Hotel). One mystery is that Anne Savage, the Knotsford’s daughter, wears Elizabethan dress whereas her mother is dressed in the up to date Puritan style of 1618. The explanation is that Baldwin’s son, fresh from his apprenticeship in London and

aware of the latest fashions of dress, was responsible for carving Mrs Knotsford.
