What is Nutrition?
The act or process of nourishing or being nourished;
Specifically , the sum of the processes by which an animal or plant takes in and utilizes food substances
Malnutrition
Malnutrition is the condition that results from taking an unbalanced diet in which certain nutrients are lacking, in excess , or in the wrong proportions.
What leads to Malnutrition
Mother is not well-nourished during pregnancy, she is unable to provide sufficient nutrients for the body stores of the child.
Iron & Vitamin C deficiency cause anaemia and severe anemia can lead to maternal and perinatal deaths.
What leads to Malnutrition
Folic acid deficiency in early pregnancy leads to birth defects (neural tube defects).
Dietary iodine deficiency during pregnancy hinders development of the fetus.

The 2011 Global Hunger Index (GHI) Report ranked India 15th, amongst leading countries with hunger situation.
Prevention & Cure A computerized Central and Block level
monitoring systems should be devised with deliverable targets and time frames
A community based nutrition monitoring and surveillance through ICDS infrastructure could include growth monitoring of infants and children and weight monitoring of adolescent girls and women
Creating a data base on the nutritional status of children, adolescents and women in each Anganwadi
