Class of 2020,Congratulations on your graduation from high school! Graduation is one of the most incredible moments in a person’s life. There are wonderful childhood memories behind you, infinite possibilities ahead of you and an incredible feeling of accomplishment and celebration pervading your senses. You weren’t given this moment, you earned it, and you should feel a huge sense of accomplishment and pride. Your family and friends surround you in a cushion of love and support as you relish in this moment. Though this year has been an unprecedented period of time in our lives, it does not diminish the incredible significance that this time has to you and to those who love and care for you.

Many people say that life is filled with ups and downs, but I challenge you to see life as being filled with opportunities. Coupled with opportunities comes choice, and the older you become, the more you are personally responsible for each of the choices made in your lives. This current moment affords us the opportunity to reflect on our lives and what is most important in our life. As you reflect, I encourage you to dispel what is considered possible and imagine the impossible. If you can conceive of the impossible, and believe it is possible, you can make the choices necessary to achieve those goals. What we make possible is not always easy, but life is not easy, so why not make the choices that will elevate our lives, our present and our future.

I challenge you to make the impossible possible, and to make positive choices that will lead to achieving those goals, but I also challenge you to be positive, kind and to have fun. These three ingredients will help you to enjoy your life’s journey and to have a positive impact on those you meet along the way.

Finally, I challenge you to be you. The world needs the unique, beautiful soul that you are to make it an interesting and productive place. You will contribute to the culture and the work of this world, but your impact can only be realized if you are your authentic self. You have started to explore and understand who you are, and you should continue to develop and love yourself. There is no need to compare yourself to others, because you are the best and only you that exists. Always seek and support your best self and do not let anyone detract from who you are.

It has been an honor to serve you as your principal this year. I am proud of you and your accomplishments as young men and young women. You will always hold a special place in my heart, and in the body of Mallard Creek High School. You are a Maverick and you will always be #CreekStrong. Draw upon that strength when your opportunities are coming from challenges. Your light and strength will move you through the valleys in your life, and make the shadows disappear. Your light will also be a beacon and a lamp for others when you are experiencing peaks in your life. You are the dawn of a new decade and the hope of our future. Congratulations Class 2020.

Honor CordsThe custom of wearing a distinctive dress for academic ceremonies goes back to the Middle Ages, when scholars were nearly always associated with a church or monastery. A heavy gown, usually black or brown and worn at all times, signified a man of learning. As fields of study became more numerous, colors were added to distinguish scholars from the clergy and to indicate the degree and rank, areas of academic specialty and scholarly excellence. Following this long-standing tradition, members of the class of 2020 reflect Mallard Creek’s academic excellence and student achievement by proudly wearing the colors of the specific fields of achievement.

Platform Guest R egaliaMembers of today’s platform party are dressed in traditional academic regalia. The style of robe and the length of the hood indicate the highest degree earned. The bachelor’s degree, the baccalaureate, takes its name directly from the medieval practice of bachelors wearing a garland of bayberries. The robes, which have a long pleated front with shirring across the shoulders and back, are primarily distinguished by flowing sleeves pointed at the fingertips.

The master’s degree in medieval times was equivalent to a license to teach and sometimes was followed by the phrase Licentia Docendi. The robe symbolizing this degree has sleeves cut so that the forearm comes through a slit just above the elbow. This unique feature gives the appearance of long cloth strips which extend from each sleeve.

The doctor’s degree was originally a title of respect and recognition of great learning. Today, the doctorate indicates advanced study and independent research in a highly specialized field of learning. The doctoral robes feature a broad velvet panel down the front and three velvet bars on the full round sleeves. The velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the degree.

The hood is the most essential aspect of the academic regalia. Its interior silk lining bears the colors of the university conferring the degree. The color of the exterior velvet strip indicates the field in which the scholar has studied.

The bachelor’s hood is three feet long with a two-inch strip of velvet; the master’s hood is three and one-half feet long, faced with a three-inch strip of velvet; and the doctor’s hood is four feet long, faced with a five-inch strip of velvet.
