EDUCATION

Basic Education

Save the Children’s basic education program aims at increasing the number of girls and boys that

complete primary school. This is meant to ensure that there is an increased equitable access to quality basic education for school-aged children. The program also aims to ensure that there is improved household and community capacity to protect and increase children’s participation in basic education.

Under Sponsorship, basic education is implement-ed in four zones within Traditional Authority (TA) Chikowi in the district of Zomba. It is implemented in 40 schools and serves over 41,000 children. In addition, there are basic education programs operating in three other districts, Mchinji, Ntchisi, and Rumphi. These programs are a microcosm of the basic education programs under Sponsorship.

Together, they reach over 60,000 children.

The programs work with the district education network to improve the effectiveness of committees and different

parties such as parents and protection action groups, who are in-volved in establishing suitable learning environments for students.

HEALTH

Save the Children currently supports several health sector initiatives in Malawi. They focus on addressing the health and survival needs of women and children under the age of five years living in rural and peri-urban communities.

Maternal, Newborn & Child Health

This programme supports the Ministry of Health and its partners to improve facility and community based maternal and newborn care interventions. It also aims to increase community knowledge and practices for optimal health and HIV behaviours as well as increasing demand for health care. The maternal and newborn interventions include fo-cused antenatal care, delivery assisted by a skilled attendant, early post-natal care for mother and newborn, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) for small babies and management of birth asphyxia using the Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) algorithm.

EVERY ONE Campaign

EVERY ONE is an ambitious global campaign that was lanched in 2010. Its aim is to stop children dying needlessly before they reach the age of five. The ambitious goals can’t be achieved by Save the Children alone. We’re working with donors, government, international corporations, civil soci-ety and local communities.

FOOD SECURITY & LIVELIHOODS

This sector consists of initiatives, which address various issues in Malawi. These include maternal child health and nutrition, HIV and AIDs, orphan and vulnerable children, household level food security and more. The program targets rural and peri-urban communities.

CHILD PROTECTION

As part of the Global Child Protection Initiative, the CLEAR project (Child Labour Elimination Actions for Real Change) is being implemented in Malawi. It is designed to protect and withdraw children from hazardous child labour in tobacco growing areas and reintegrate them into schools and communities. Implementation is through a consortium of four NGOs; Save the Children, Creative Centre for Community Mobilisation (CRECCOM,) Total Land Care (TLC) and Youthnet and Counseling (YONECO).
