MALACHI HOUSE News for our Friends and Volunteers - July 2014 Letter from the Chairman Every day at Malachi House, we are blessed with volunteers who give us their time and talent. Last month, I had the pleasure to meet four young men—Rob Armagno, Mike O’Brien, Jared Richard, and Phil Shen—all graduates from Gilmour Academy, who are volunteering to run our summer beach party, Krusty’s. This unique event was started 22 years ago by Joe Granzier and Tony Shaker, two St. Ignatius graduates, who began inviting their friends to Whiskey Island for a fundraiser on the first Saturday in August. Last year, over 1,200 people had fun listening to music, eating barbecue food, and playing games. Since its inception, Krusty’s has raised over $850,000 and an awareness of Malachi House. Recently, Kaitlin McCready and Andrea Ball from our Associate Board, chaired a fundraiser by creating a Kentucky Derby party. Nearly a hundred people attended dressed in their Derby attire, where they enjoyed playing games, and learned of the mission of Malachi House. For the last 27 years, volunteers have organized our annual benefit. In recent years, Diane Kennedy, Carol Hildebrandt and I, have had the support of friends like Sue Veber, Dawna Meng, and Hilarie Hionis, who have kept the tradition going. This event hosts over 200 people who come to support our home, but also to enjoy a memorable evening at a unique location in our city. If you would like to learn how to organize a beach party, golf outing, Derby party, annual benefit, or create a fundraiser of your choice, call us to volunteer. I guarantee you will have fun, and learn effective ways to fundraise; but most importantly, you will have a chance to give back to your community and support Malachi House. Malachi House is fortunate to have groups choose to share their talents for a “done-in-a-day” project. We were honored to be selected as a project site for the 2014 Sherwin-Williams GSC Technical Summit. The group of Sherwin-Williams employees that we welcomed was exceptional. They seemed to truly understand that Malachi House is a home, and treated it as though it was their own. While they visited, they painted a stairway hall that spans three floors, our sitting room, a kitchenette, a bathroom, our pantry area, a staircase, a resident room and two offices with the paint and materials they donated. They even had enough time to paint an extra resident room! They were able to get right to work thanks to a group from Hylant Insurance who prepped the areas prior to this work day. In addition to painting, they brought three pallets of donated goods. A dedicated group sorted those donations and also helped tidy-up our pantry. The outpouring of generosity was completely awe-inspiring. With all that we had already received, you can imagine the overwhelming sense of surprise when we were presented a donation of $2800. We survive solely upon donations, whether it’s material, monetary, or time. Sherwin-Williams did all three in one day! We could not be more touched by this entire experience. We want to thank all the employees of The Breen Technology Center for their kindness and for reminding us of the intense community support of our mission - to care for those at a time in their lives when they need it most. Letter from the Chairman Every day at Malachi House, we are blessed with volunteers who give us their time and talent.

News from the Volunteer Coordinator

Everything we do at Malachi House would not be possible without the gracious help of those who donate their time. In 2003, we presented our first Father Paul Hritz Volunteer of the Year Award to recognize one of our amazing volunteers. This is no easy task, so I enlisted the help of all staff, volunteers, and supportive hospice colleagues to nominate who they felt deserved this award. We had 17 individuals nominated, and many received more than one nomination. We are happy to present this year’s award to Margie Kaminski.

Dear Friends, “Many hands make light work” John Heywood once said, and our volunteers know that. They know that “someone” needs to answer the phone, cut the grass and wash the dishes. They lead with their hearts and they give selflessly of their time, talent and treasure. They present themselves and ask, “what can I do?” with no agenda other than to help. I thank God for all that you do, have done or will do. I thank you for your kindness, love and dedication to our Home. Blessings,

I am so grateful for the special people who have shared their music with our residents. I would like to mention a few of our “regulars” who have added so many special experiences for the residents. Each spring, we have had music therapy students fulfill the requirements for their music therapy advanced practicum by working with some of our residents. Last year, Lauren Welich (Cleveland State University) brought us such joy by bringing in her full size harp: a beautiful instrument we rarely hear in such an intimate setting. Our most recent student, Jaclyn Ford (Baldwin Wallace University) says that her experience with residents at Malachi has inspired her to apply for internships in a hospice setting. Currently, Wiley Smith (Cleveland State University) is volunteering his time to gain extra music therapy experience before he begins his internship. Wiley is the research assistant for our ongoing music therapy

Notes in Music Therapy research project and will also provide music experiences while I am on maternity leave. In addition to music therapy students, we have been blessed with some women who have shared their music in a special way. Ellen Peoples is known for her powerful voice and Qchord skills. She has been volunteering at the House for almost ten years, and adds a special element to communion for the residents whenever she is here. Ellen also occasionally provides the music for the volunteer prayer service, which gives me a rare chance to enjoy the service rather than focusing on providing the music. Lastly, I want to mention Pauletta Williams, director of the wonderfully generous Bethany Ensemble from Bethany Christian Church. When I first started working at Malachi House, I was in search of a group who could provide live gospel music, and for nearly two years now the Bethany Ensemble has come almost every month to share music and prayer with the residents. Thank you to all of these amazing volunteers!

Margie began volunteering in 2010. In her application she stated that she wanted to volunteer because, “I love people… I want to share my time and talents with those in need.” Margie does this every Thursday as she acts as an aide to our Caregiver Assistants. Margie will do resident turns, help with feeding, provide comfort and companionship, clean floors, bathrooms, and really do whatever is needed. One nominator stated, “She not only brightens the

residents’ day, but the staff’s day as well.” Another said, “Fantastic with residents… always a positive influence.” We thank Margie for her service and are so happy to present her this award.

Sharing Their Talents...

MISSION STATEMENT:Malachi House, created out of a Christian sense of ministry, serves persons who are terminally ill without regard to gender, race, or national origin and without cost to the resident or family. This home ministers to individuals

who need an available caregiver, who have limited or no financial resources and are in need of special home care in the final stages of life. A trained staff and volunteers provide spiritual, emotional, and physical support with the

assistance of a Hospice team.

It’s certainly no secret that Pier W, a landmark Cleveland restaurant, has been serving an award-winning menu of seafood and contemporary dishes since 1965. But what you may not know is that Pier W is a tremendous friend to Malachi House! Our friendship began when their Executive Chef, Regan Reik, donated his time and talent to prepare breakfast for our residents in our very own kitchen. Now under the leadership of Mark Kawada, Pier W’s General Manager, our partnership has grown. “The Greater Cleveland community has given so much to us that we wanted to find a way to give back,” says Mark. “I wanted to find a worthy local charity that had a long-standing presence and helped the neediest in our community—and I found the perfect choice—Malachi House.” For three years now, our friends at Pier W have hosted the annual Copper River Salmon Run. Every one of their employees volunteers countless hours to plan, prepare for, and hold the day’s festivities. In addition to this day, many of their employees also donate throughout the entire year. The event includes a fabulous 5K walk/run that begins at Lakewood Park to celebrate the famed Copper River Salmon Season and culminates in a post-race party on the restaurant’s deck. Of course, the day would not be complete without a delicious lunch of Copper River Salmon burgers with all the accoutrements prepared by Chef Reik. This year’s event, held on May 31, had nearly 300 participants who joined in on the fun and helped to generate proceeds that will allow us to continue to provide the best quality care possible for the residents in our home. THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered at or supported the Copper River Salmon Run. See you next year for an even bigger and better event!!!
