June 1 started our hurricane season. Whether you decide to stay put in an emergency or evacuate to a safer location, you will need to make plans in advance for your pets. If your animals are on medication, make sure that you have an extra supply. You never want to be down to the last few pills. Their vaccination records must also be current and available if you have to move to a shelter or board them at a kennel. They will not be accepted for boarding if they are not current on their shots. Each cat should have their own individual carrier. This month we have brought back our popular microchip clinics to help you get your cats and dogs microchipped at a reduced cost of $15.00. The first clinic was June 12 and we will have follow up clinics on the second Thursday of every month from 5-7:00 PM at our shelter. The next one will be July 10. No reservations are necessary but your pets must be on a leash or in a carrier. Along with a microchip, make sure your pets wear identification tags as well. Have a safe and fun filled summer everyone!

Feral Cat Spay Days will be Monday, July 14th and August 11th. Feral cats will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated and ear notched for $10.00. There is no limit; bring as many as you can trap!

* Be cautious on humid days. Dogs and cats pant to rid themselves of excess body heat. Air moves through their nasal passages, which picks up excess heat from their body. As air is expelled through the mouth, the extra heat leaves with it. Humidity interferes with this process and it is harder to rid themselves of this excess body heat. * Take special care with snub-nosed breeds like Pugs, Shih Tzu, and Bulldogs. Since they have a short nose, it is more difficult to breathe especial on humid days. * Elderly, very young, and ill animals have a hard time regulating their body temperature, so make sure they stay cool and out of the sun. * Water, water, water!! Whether indoors or out, your pet needs to have access to lots of fresh water so check the bowls throughout the day to make sure they are full. * Some pets need sunscreen, especially those with little or no hair. Make sure the product is made for animals and apply to nose, ears and hairless areas to avoid sunburn. Sunburn can cause the same pain and problems it does in people. * Keep your pet out of the sun between 10-4 to avoid sunburn and avoid the hottest part of the day. * If your pet does become overheated, you will need to lower his body temperature. Apply cool (not cold) water over his body to gradually lower his core body temperature. It can be dangerous if you cool your pet too rapidly. Let your pet lick ice cubes or drink SMALL amounts of water. Get him to your veterinarian as soon as you can. * Keep in mind that the asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pets paws. * NEVER EVER leave your pet inside a car, not even with the windows down. Studies have shown the temperature can reach 120 degrees in five minutes even with the windows cracked. Pets can suffer heat stroke, brain damage, and can even die.

* Summer also brings thunderstorms which can frighten animals, so keep your pets inside during storms. Electrical current is felt by many dogs during a storm, this is why many hide in a bathtub to help combat the feeling. * Don’t take your pets to crowded summer events. The loud noises and crowds, combined with the heat, can be stressful and dangerous for pets. Be especially aware of these threats during holidays and Fourth of July. * Summer is a time when people work in their garden. Lawn fertilizer, plant food, and insecticides can be fatal if your pet ingests them. * Fleas are a problem throughout the year, but they are especially bad during the summer months. Make sure you use a good quality flea control product on your pet and the environment.

Bark in the ParkThis years’ Bark in the Park was a howling good time and raised over $80,000 for the animals. Humane Society of Tampa Bay supporters joined us at Al Lopez Park with their furry friends for the one mile walk. The fun filled day included pet demonstrations, pet tricks, and pet costume contests. Tuxes and TailsThe sixth annual Tuxes and Tails black-tie event was a big success, raising more than $124,000 for the animals. Over three hundred guests enjoyed dinner and music and bid on items in both our live and silent auctions. The celebrity fashion show, including models such as Jules Burt, Ian Beckles, Chip Carter and Shark from 97X was a big hit. Summer Bake Off ChallengeDoggie Delicious and Cat Cuisine are looking for recipes that satisfy even the finickiest of tastes. Please submit your original dog or cat recipes for our consideration. You can even bring some into the shelter for us to sample. Send your entry to [email protected] or mail it to us at Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Bake Off, 3607 N Armenia Ave, Tampa, FL 33607. Please submit all entries by September 5th. All entries should include your name and address. The winning recipes will be in the next issue of Making Tracks.

Families for a Better Life donated supplies, food, treats, litter ⇲and money.Primrose School of Westchase donated over $250 worth of ⇲food that they collected.Kelsey had her guests at her birthday bring gifts for our ⇲animals instead of for her, she brought in $65 in cash and approximately $70 in food.Cleveland Elementary School’s Kindergarten classes held ⇲a donation drive and brought in food, litter, supplies and treats.Asher, Max and Stella brought ⇲in donations for our animals.Chamberlain High School’s ⇲DECA held a donation drive and brought in food, supplies and treats.Lake Magdalene held a donation ⇲drive and gathered over $250 worth of supplies and food.The two children pictured sold ⇲Gasparilla Beads and raised $150.7 Springs Middle School ⇲donated treats, food and toys.Ella sold lemonade and raised $28. ⇲

Girl Scout Junior Troop 1275 ⇲donated items and brought in handmade blankets and kitty hammocks.Aiden and Quinn had ⇲their birthday guests bring donations.Girl Scout Brownie Troop 433 ⇲brought in supplies and $20 in cash.The 6th grade classes at Mann ⇲Middle School made bandanas for our dogs.Girl Scout Junior Troop 346 ⇲brought in treats and supplies.

You can volunteer at HSTB starting at age 12. Those that are 12-15 must volunteer with an adult. Ages 16-17 can volunteer without an adult. Everyone must fill out an application (go to www.humanesocietytampa.org) and attend an orientation and other training as needed.

Tragedy to Triumph

On the evening of May 5th, Mizz Ginny was rescued by Hillsborough County Animal Services. She had not been fed for two months. The investigators thought she was dead, then suddenly her eyes moved. She was still alive. She was fed intravenously until she was strong enough to drink water and eat soft food.

On May 19th, Ginny was transferred to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. Her condition has continued to improve and she is currently in foster care. Despite all she has been through, she shows no sign of aggression.

Ginny has started treatment for heartworms and once that is completed, she will be put up for adoption at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

The woman responsible is facing felony charges for cruelty to animals - intentional starvation and misdemeanor charges for confinement of animals without food and water. Stay tuned and we’ll let you know what happens.

Mister Car Wash:Thank you to Mister Car Wash who offered free car washes in exchange for a donation to the Humane Society of Tampa Bay at their Grand Opening May 23rd & 24th. Mister Car Wash raised $7,365 for the homeless animals of Tampa Bay!

Scratch My Back:The 12th Annual Scratch My Back concert was held once again at Skipper’s Smokehouse in Tampa. The event brought in more than $5,500 to help the animals. Attendees enjoyed music by The Quivering Rhythm Hounds and Johnny G. Lyon. Thank you to our hosts Steve Otto and Parti Marti and a special thanks to Skipper’s Smokehouse and Scott Peterson for their continued support!

Pondscapes:The annual Pondscapes tours was held on Saturday, April 26. South Tampa residents opened their homes for guests to tour the ponds and water gardens. Thank you to our friends at Pondscapes and to all the generous individuals that opened their homes for such a great cause!

dmg world media:Thank you for choosing the Humane Society of Tampa Bay to be the beneficiary of the Extreme Dog House Charity Challenge at the Tampa/St. Petersburg Home and Patio Show April 18-20. The doghouses which were built by the exhibitors were sold to support HSTB and raised $2,200.
