Our Mission

Spring Branch Education Foundation is committed to supporting our students and educators. We partner with Spring Branch ISD and the community to fund programs that enhance education and prepare our students for the future.

Our Challenge

Local taxpayers pay additional taxes attributable to increases in property valuations. However, the additional tax dollars do not remain in Spring Branch ISD under the current State of Texas public education funding formula. Unfortunately, the formula was recently confirmed as constitutional by the Texas Supreme Court. Our Solution

Private funding, through the Foundation, remains in the district and helps enhance quality of education. SBEF raises funds only for SBISD. Last year, the Foundation donated more than $1 million to the district, reaching students on every campus through grants and scholarships.

A letter from Lisa Schwartz,Spring Branch Education Foundation Chair

It is my honor and pleasure to present this annual report of the Spring Branch Education Foundation (SBEF). Along with the other dedicated members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, I take great pride in sharing the Foundation’s accomplishments that directly benefit the students and staff of the Spring Branch Independent School District.

Recognizing that SBEF’s 2014-15 gifts to the district totaled more than a $1 million for the first time, the SBISD trustees awarded the Foundation with one of the first IAmSBISD for Collective Greatness medallions. Given at the School Board’s discretion, these medallions recognize organizations that exemplify one or more of the district’s core values. Superintendent Dr. Scott Muri noted the Foundation’s continuing passion for and commitment to the children and staff of SBISD.

In addition, the Foundation was ranked number one in the nation among education foundations with $1 million to $1,999,999 in revenues by “Stepping Up: The Top K-12 Education Foundations in the Nation,” the nation’s only annual study that ranks K-12 foundations.But, without a doubt, these Foundation successes resulting in enhanced educational programs and experiences for our district would not be possible without you – our donors, supporters and volunteers. Thanks to you, SBEF awarded $274,446 in grants to 28 campuses and gifted the entire district with 11 grants. In addition, the Foundation gave 127 student scholarships totaling $113,130. 

In this report we also highlight the Foundation’s signature events – the Gala, Style Show, Golf Classic, Sporting Clay Tournament, Running for the Arts and Cookin’ for a Cause – that have become community traditions. These events are more successful each year – a testament to our wonderful volunteers, our involved community and the unwavering enthusiasm of our Executive Director, Cece Thompson.

Professionally, I travel in many Houston-area school systems and also participate in other education foundations. I have never seen such support for a school district from its community. To me, that is exactly what sets Spring Branch ISD apart from any other: unparalleled leadership, quality instruction and the incredible support given to our students, teachers and administrators.

I commend each and every one of you for helping the Foundation make a very real difference. Together, we’re making our schools better and I look forward to seeing you at one, or all, of our events!

Dear Friends of the Spring Branch Education Foundation,

The impact and importance of our community’s deep commitment to our children, our educators and our school district cannot be underestimated. Research affirms our children thrive when they know their community values and supports them and has high expectations for them. Nowhere is this support more evident than through the great work of the award-winning Spring Branch Education Foundation.

This year marks the launch of The Learner’s Journey, Spring Branch ISD’s new five-year plan that targets opportunities to personalize the learning experience for students, staff and families. We will transform the educational experience with intentional, targeted focus on four key strategic areas: the student learning environment or “ecosystem” including both traditional and beyond school time; the care and development of every SBISD employee; the people, places, partners and programs that provide personalized supports for students, families and staff; and specific initiatives foundational to the success of the plan including innovation, enhanced supports for schools and school leaders, and strong community engagement.

We cannot do this work alone. The Spring Branch Education Foundation will continue to be a critically important partner in assuring the success of Every Child we serve. Our single-focused goal remains Spring Branch T-2-4—the successful completion of a technical certificate, military training, or a 2-year or 4-year degree by every SBISD graduate.

I thank you for your support of SBEF and encourage your continued engagement in the Foundation’s fundraising and community engagement efforts and targeted philanthropy. You make possible campus and teacher grants, arts experiences for every elementary and middle school child, sustained mentoring programming, college scholarships for dozens of SBISD graduates, and more. Your generosity helps us fill gaps resulting from the current public school finance model and supports innovation needed to keep SBISD at the forefront of learning.

The only U.S. study of K-12 education foundations ranked SBEF #1 in our revenue division ($1 million - $1,999,999) and 17th out of the nation’s 200 largest school districts. We’re #1 in Texas!

We’re proud of that distinction, but we’re even prouder of the impact our grants and scholarships have on our students!

Campus and District-wide Grants $209,508CampusEvery spring and fall, the Foundation awards grants, up to $5,000 each, for innovative projects that enhance education. Staff and campus volunteers are invited to dream big when they apply for the grants. And they do! Programs are as diverse as expanded technology, ground-breaking reading programs, water safety classes, sensory motor labs and specialized workshops for teachers.

District-wideSome grants reach across the district: funding for the award-winning SpringBoard Mentoring Program and fine arts field trips to the city’s premier performing and visual arts venues, as well as our own Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum. In 2015-16, the Foundation also funded, among other programs, STEM activity supplies and substance abuse awareness programs for all SBISD students.

Donor- designated Grants $731,546Generous community members – individuals, businesses and organizations – donate money for specific projects that benefit one campus or the entire district. This year, for instance, Texas Capitol Bank funded a program for Spring Shadows Elementary students to take riding lessons. As they worked with the horses, young riders gained a sense of accomplishment and empowerment.

Scholarships $113,130SBISD grads – 127 strong – received scholarships through SBEF in 2016. We’re proud that our scholarships are based on each student’s holistic achievements: personal qualities, school and community involvement, family life and academics. Included in the 127, are 47 graduates, children of SBISD employees, who received scholarships thanks to the SBEF Employee Campaign.

Style Show and Luncheon

$26,609SBISD parent and volunteer models rocked the runway at the Foundation’s fifth annual style show and luncheon, wearing designs by Houston’s own Chloe Dao and Elaine Turner. Co-chairs Lara Bell and Patty Busmire welcomed more than 450 guests who share a passion for education.

Golf Classic

$71,224Golfers always expect to have a great time when SBEF hosts its Golf Classic, and the 20th annual event exceeded expectations. Co-chairs Doug Goodson and Rob Stewart had no problems enticing teams to the links to help fund programs for students and teachers.

Spring Branch Education Foundation Gala

$184,339Chairs Melissa and Mano DeAyala hosted an enchanted evening at the Foundation’s annual gala, A Magical Masquerade Ball. As they competed over games and auction items, guests had the satisfaction of knowing they were funding grants and scholarships.

Running for the Arts

$51,000Foreboding weather forecasts forced the cancellation of SBEF’s 24th annual Running for the Arts. Even so, the event attracted nearly 2300 registrants, the community stepped up as generous sponsors, and SBISD students enjoyed field trips to the city’s premier visual and performing arts venues.

Sporting Clay Tournament

$19,272Forty teams gathered on a blue-sky day in February for the fourth annual Sporting Clay Tournament. Kirk Guilanshah chaired the event that is quickly becoming a favorite for men and women who support SBEF and SBISD students.

Cookin’ for a Cause

$1,811SBEF Young Leaders co-chairs Laura Stein and Vincent Montalbano hosted the inaugural Cookin’ for a Cause in May. Teams competed for bragging rights for the best BBQ in SBISD. Guests spent the afternoon visiting with friends, playing games and listening to music, while funding scholarships for SBISD seniors.

Northbrook High School, Collegiate Challenge

Students volunteered with senior citizens, then visited St. Edwards University in Austin.

The grant “gave our students an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zones to make connections with people they previously didn’t know. . . . The St. Edwards visit opened their eyes to the idea that there are many types of universities out there, that some may be a better fit for them than others…”

Running for the Arts, a 24-year traditionRunning for the Arts, SBEF’s longest-running and most popular fundraiser, supports ArtsPartners, which provides cultural arts field trips for SBISD students in grades one through eight and the district’s Health Fitness program. This year, Northbrook Middle School sixth-grader Alexia Lara won the RFA art contest and saw her artwork on the event’s t-shirts.

Employee Campaign scholarship recipientsCongratulations to the 47 2015-16 Employee Campaign Scholarship recipients! This annual campaign funds scholarships for children of employees who attend SBISD schools. Recipients say the scholarships feel like a vote of confidence as they leave SBISD. What a wonderful send-off!
