IntroductionThe studio members include three creative

    individual:

    Sean Banford http://seanyb-art.blogspot.com/

    Dayle Sanders http://daylesanders.blogspot.com/

    Adam Webb - http://thevistor.blogspot.com/

The Attack of the Robot Spiders is set in the roots of

the period of the 1950s but has been brought forward as

a modern production that represents a possible future. It

combines the genres ofSci-Fi and Horror to

communicate the story of the hidden secrets of an

abandoned research facility returning to haunt the cast

that attempt to explore and reopen it. This book guides

the process of making the 1 minute 30 second trailer for

    the film.

    Story

    4

A News Crew bribes a scientist to take them down to an

abandoned advanced research facility. To find out what

advanced technology was going on. Linda wants to make a

big hit, convinces some of the members to go down with

her to make the interview and shoot, the news crew sneak

into this place surreptitiously unaware of the secret

mechanical creatures that have been locked down there.

Something has been stirring in the

shadows and as Linda and the team

    voyages through the complex, the

    unknown experiments make their

presence known and seek out the

    source of what disturbed them.

Fear Lurks in the laboratory as the members

    of the crew mysteriously disappear...

    Storyboard

This Storyboard helped to visualise the shots and help to piece together a logical order

of what scenes would work and also what needed to be edited out.

    Animatic

    7

After redrafting the script and shot transitions, this animatic was a crucial stage to figure out camera shots

pacing and lighting techniques that could be used to make the trailer stronger. As a group we decided that

plain black and white tones would contrast better to the intense red glow of the spiders.

To reach these final concepts,we had to decide on a style to make the characters feel believable

for our world of the trailer. It was agreed to chose very specific stereotypes of the 1950s

1960s time period of typical characters that stand out in a social group.

    Drone and Alpha Spider

    9

There were many ways that we could of designed the robot spider but to address

the horror section, it was decided that one solitary eye could be considered quite

menacing that creates one intense red glow. Also a spiky machine approach was

used in the legs to capture the terrors of a spider combined with robotics.

    Prop Designs

    10

The style used for the characters helped to define the props and what would suit the characters. Also

the 1950s design were more restrictions that were taken into consideration.

    Environment: Laboratory

    11

We decided that the lab should be represented as clean and basic soft colours such as white,

typically found in a lab environment. This was to explain how some areas were left

abandoned as they would of looked in the past. Also how the spiders could of taken over

some corridors and create nests using wire for metallic webbing.

    Character RigSetup

    15

The rigging for the three characters had to include blend shapes, nurbcurves, etc so that they could be animated to give facial expressions and

smooth body movement in order to complete the required scenes

where they are interacting with props, the environment and each other.

    Spider RigSetup

    18

The rig for the spiders were quite simple joints nurb circles because they

are only shown in few and specific scenes and only require movement that

would be layered with the red glow and shadows later in post-

    production.

    Modelling Props

    19

The props were made to fit the characters or the environment that it was meantfor so were styled to fit style of animation. The textures and colours were also

considered as pale and clear colours that would be desaturated.

    ModellingEnvironment

    20

The environment had to meet the requirements of the

animatic to match the shots for the trailer. Simple textures

have been used to keep to the idea of the lab as a clean

environment and would be blurred out in Post-Production.
