We cordially invite you to participate in the Third International Conference on Thermochemical Biomass Conversion Science, tcbiomass2013. The event will be held 3–6 September 2013, in downtown Chicago, IL USA—a dynamic international city and a center of technological development in the area of renewable energy.

The use of biomass as a renewable and sustainable fuel is being realized as industry experts move advanced conversion processes into commercial projects—and the world toward a cleaner, more diverse, and affordable energy future. At tcbiomass2013, participants will be at the center of international collaboration, hearing first-hand the latest research, development, and deployment results for thermal biomass conversion technologies and systems.

As co-chairs, we are confident that tcbiomass will be a landmark event in 2013. We anticipate 400+ participants and an extensive program addressing critical issues and emerging opportunities in the global bioenergy area. Our keynotes and invited speakers come from around the world, representing the very best in their field of

expertise. We will also have presentations, both oral and poster, from industry, government

and academia in the areas of gasification, pretreatment, pyrolysis, and upgrading.

and synthesis gas for use in power, chemicals, and liquid fuels production.

Kyriakos Maniatis , PhD

Kyriakos Maniatis is Principal Administrator, Biofuels, for the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission. He currently leads

European efforts on the deployment of advanced biofuels technologies for road and aviation applications.

Alan Del Paggio, PhD

Dr. Alan Del Paggio received a BS degree in Chemistry from Purdue University and a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from UC Berkeley as a National Science Foundation

pre-doctoral fellow.

Alan is currently the Vice President of CRI Catalyst Company, a fully owned subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, plc. He has 27 years experience with petrochemical and refinery catalytic processes with a current focus on delivering catalysts for whole crude and unconventional heavy oil upgrading, the Shell Gas-To-Liquids process and creation of a new business unit to produce ‘tank ready’ cellulosic hydrocarbon fuels directly from biomass via IH2® technology from GTI.

Robert M. Sturtz

Vice President of Business Development, World Fuel Services

Bob Sturtz holds a BS degree in Engineering and an MBA. He recently joined World Fuel Services as Vice President of Business

Development after retiring from United Airlines with 36 years of service. Bob was responsible for the purchase and distribution of over $12 billion of jet fuel. In 1986, he founded United Aviation Fuels Corp., a wholly owned jet fuel trading company that sold term jet fuel supply contracts to 35 other airlines, transported jet fuel, traded, and imported jet fuel to the U.S. He also founded airline consortia and corporations that maintain and operate airport fuel distribution systems. Bob has been involved in developing aviation bio-fuels for the last 4 years and was the business and commercial working group lead at Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative, and an advisor to Midwest Aviation Sustainable Bio-fuels Initiative. He also serves as President and CEO of the non-profit Fueling California.

David Danielson, PhD

Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy

Dr. David Danielson leads the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) within the U.S. Department of Energy

(DOE), overseeing a broad energy portfolio intended to hasten the transition to a clean energy economy. Previously, he was the first Program Director hired by DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). Before ARPA-E, he was a clean energy venture capitalist at General Catalyst Partners. He was a co-founder of the New England Clean Energy Council. He has authored more than 20 scientific articles in the field of advanced materials. David holds a BS from University of California, Berkeley and a PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Materials Science and Engineering. While at MIT, he was the founder and President of the MIT Energy Club and founding Director of the MIT Energy Conference, and also awarded the Karl Taylor Compton Prize, MIT’s highest student award.

Ingvar Landälv

Senior Project Manager—LTU Biosyngas Program, Luleå University of Technology

Ingvar Landälv holds an MS degree in Physics and Chemistry. He recently joined Luleå University of Technology as Senior

Project Manager in the LTU Biosyngas Program, focusing on continued R&D and commercialization of biomass derived gasification technologies. He is also Vice Chair of the European Biofuels Technology Platform. From 1997-2012, he served as CTO of Chemrec, fully engaged in the development and commercialization of their black liquor gasification technology. Ingvar has more than 35 years experience of process R&D, design, engineering, construction and operation of gasification based process plants based on oil, coal and biomass, and holds a number of patents.

Mitchell E. Loescher, PhD, PE

Director of Technology, KiOR

Dr. Mitch Loescher holds BS degrees in Chemical Engineering and Economics from Caltech, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M. He started in operations with

Exxon Chemical in Baton Rouge, eventually moving into R&D at Baytown. Following Exxon, he joined Catalytic Distillation Technologies as an R&D manager developing petrochemical and clean fuels processes for licensing, including bio-ethanol-based ETBE. After joining ConocoPhillips, he built a conceptual engineering group at their Bartlesville corporate R&D center to provide commercialization and economic support to the researchers. Now at KiOR, Mitch is Director of Technology, responsible for their process design, research programs, design basis, and commercial plant support. He holds 64 U.S. and international patents.
