Making Heroes Nurturing a Growth Mindset
FAILURES
GRIT
Angela Lee Duckworth, Ph.D
“Grit is sticking with your future — day in, day out,
not just for the week, not just for the month, but for
years — and working really hard to make that future
a reality.”
MINDSET
GROWTH vs. FIXED
The view you adopt for
yourself profoundly affects
the way you lead your life.
MINDSET
Powerful Beliefs
One day, you go to a class that is really
important to you and that you like a lot. The
professor returns the midterm papers to the
class. You got a C+. You’re very
disappointed. That evening on your way
back to your home, you find that you’ve
gotten a parking ticket. Being really
frustrated, you call your best friend to share
your experience but are sort of brushed off.
Another Bad Day
Another Bad Day
“ I feel rejected.”
“ I’m a total failure”
“ I’m an idiot!”
“ Life stinks. Nothing good
ever happens to me.”
“I’m the most unlucky
person in the world.”
“I need to try harder and
be more careful”
“ I wonder what’s wrong
with my friend.”
“I still have the rest of the
semester to pull up my
grade”
“ I need to pay for my
parking ticket.”

FIXED MINDSET
Truly believe that:
RISK and EFFORT
are two things
that might reveal
and show that
you were not up
to task
GROWTH MINDSET
If at first you don’t
succeed try, try
again.
Nothing Ventured,
nothing gain
Rome wasn’t built

FIXED MINDSET
Nothing Ventured,
nothing lost
If at first you don’t
succeed , you probably
don’t have the ability.
Rome wasn’t built in
a day, maybe it
wasn’t meant to be.
GROWTH MINDSET
People’s ability to recognize the value of
challenging themselves and the
importance of effort.

Evidence in the Brain Waves
Feedback reflected on their
ability vs. information that
could help them learn
On Effort “Great geniuses” are NOT
suppose to need it.
On Talent Talent can carry them through
You are a finished product
Either you have the ability
or You expend
effort
The Story of Bernard Loiseau
Guide Michelin: Supreme Rating 3 stars
He had lost 2 points in another guide on
another guide (from 19 to 17 stars)
Rumors spread he will lose 1 of the 3 stars
in the new Guide
He killed himself
“ People who believed in fixed traits feel
an urgency to succeed, and when they
do, they may feel more than pride. They
may feel a sense of superiority, since
success means that their fixed traits are
better than other people’s”
If you’re somebody when you’re successful, what are you when you’re
unsuccessful?

“Am I smart or dumb? Am I good-looking or ugly? Am I cool or nerdy?
GROWTH MINDSET
A young graduate student in math at Berkeley rushed in late to his math class and quickly copied the two homework problems from the black board. When he later went to do them, he found them very difficult, and it took him several days of hard work to crack them open to solve them.

Paid close attention to
information that could stretch
their knowledge
On Effort Effort ignites the ability and
turns it into accomplishment
On Talent You are a work in progress
Finding #1:What is Success?
Success is in doing their best, in learning and improving.
Finding #2:What is Failure?
Setbacks are motivating. They’re informative. They’re a wake-up call.
Finding #3:Taking charge of success
Take charge of the process that brings success—and maintain it.
Stretching….
A man was thrown off his horse. His neck was
broken, his spinal cord severed from his brain,
and he was completely paralyzed below the
neck. Medical science said, “So sorry, come to
terms with it.”
He asked: “Why couldn’t he learn to move
again.”
5 years later: He started to move again.
1st: His hands
Then: Legs
Then: Torso
Everyone can change and
grow through application and
experience.
There is a passion for stretching oneself and sticking to it, even when
its not going well.
Growth Mindset + Application
Growth Mindset +
Social Situations friendship
Put people down and uses people for validation. Have problems listening to other people’s successes
and assets.
Everyone has virtue and foibles, and that, really, if you looked only for perfect people, your social circle would
be impoverished.
Growth Mindset +
Social Situations shyness
Shy Growth & Fixed minded people: First 5 Minutes: Very Nervous
Experiment by Jennifer Beer
Continuously Nervous
Worried about making
mistakes
More socially Awkward
Actively welcomed the
chance to meet
someone
Became less shy &
nervous
Growth Mindset +
Social Situations bullies
Judging
Self-Esteem Rush
Some are superior and
some are inferior
Growth Mindset +
Social Situations
victims &
revenge
“I’d think I was nobody and that
nobody likes me”
“They need to get a life– not just feel
good if they make me feel bad.”
***Prolonged bullying can change a person’s mindset and make
them believe they are indeed inferior***

How do we praise our children?
Do we praise their practice,

REASSURANCE
Do we say: “Look, you know how smart you are
and we know how smart you are. You got it
nailed. Now, stop worrying.”
How do we reassure our children?
Do we say: “We aren’t evaluating you. We care
about your learning and we know you’ve
learned stuff. We’re proud you stuck to it and
kept learning.”

failure
The Case of Elizabeth, the gymnast.
a)Tell her you thought she was the best.
b)Tell her she was robbed of a ribbon that
was rightfully hers.
c)Reassure her that gymnastics is not that
important.
d)Tell her she has the ability and will surely
next time.
e)Tell her she didn’t deserve to win.

The Case of Elizabeth, the gymnast.
“I know how you feel. It’s so disappointing to have
your hopes up and to perform your best but not
to win. But you know, you haven’t really earned
it yet. There were many girls there who’ve been
in gymnastics longer than you and who’ve
worked a lot harder than you. If this is something
you really want, then it’s something you’ll really
have to work for.”

CONSTRUCTIVE criticism
“Is there something you didn’t understand in the
assignment? Would you like me to go over it
with you?”
“I feel sad when I see you miss a chance to learn.
Can you think of a way to do this to help you
learn more?”
Billy rushed through his homework and skipped several questions.

What are the opportunities for learning
and growth today?
When, where, and how will I embark
on my plan?
When, where, and how will I act on
my new plan?
Mindset Change is NOT about Picking up a Few Pointers.
It’s about seeing things in a new way.
It is a commitment to growth, and growth takes plenty of
time, effort and mutual support.
