Leigh Landy – Composition Class Ionian University – Summer School Electroacoustic Music – Week of 23 June 2008 Theme – ‘Making Connections’ Introduction – ‘Who am I?’ (All participants, including the tutor, introduce themselves by way of their music.) 1) – ‘Music is about relating art to life (or not?)’ (Also music is about questioning things in our lives, including some words on the dramaturgy of electroacoustic music, everyday listening vs. musical listening) 2) – ‘Who is your public? or I am the focus of my work vs. the public is the focus of my work’ (And all possibilities in between. Plus a 2nd theme: how do we get our music to potential listeners?) 3) – ‘Some things to hold on to’ (Should the listener hear the sounds sources in a work, how the work evolves, the structure of the work and the composer’s intention?) 4) – ‘Space is the place’ (Does the performance space matter? Is it a scandal to create a spatialised work and allow it to be heard in stereo in certain situations?) 5) – ‘Sound-based and note-based music’ (What do they have in common? How are they different? Does sound- based music represent a change in how works are classified? How does this influence your writing? Where does your work fit? 6) – ‘Live or [fill in its opposite]?’ (After sixty years of electroacoustic music, performance on a fixed medium remains controversial. How is this music best performed and is real-time still synonymous with limitation when compared to non-real time composition and performance?) & Conclusion (or 7th session with student-generated topics if time permits) – ‘Who am I?’ (Again, all including the tutor, after a week’s intensive course) NB: All students will be asked to make a short work in the form of the ‘challenge of the day’. The challenge will be determined based on how the daily session evolves. Also all students will be asked to make a slightly longer work in the form of the ‘challenge of the week’ which will be assigned at the end of the first session and shared during the concluding session.
