Women in Aerospace Canada Lands in the MaritimesSubmitted By Eva Martinez On April 12, Women in Aerospace Canada (WIA-Canada) landed in the Maritimes with an inaugural event at the Shearwater Aviation Museum, a perfect venue. The event featured special guest speaker, LCol (retired) Maryse Carmichael, Canada’s first female Snowbird pilot and first female Snowbird Squadron Commander. Maryse inspired the audience with the story of her personal journey of making her dreams to fly a reality, and the many lessons that her time as a Snowbird taught her, including the importance of mastering skills, professionalism and teamwork. Now working in the private sector, with a full appreciation of the challenges that women in industry continue to face, Maryse stressed how the foundation she received as an air cadet and subsequently as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force continues to support her success today. As Women in Aerospace Canada is new to the Atlantic provinces, the current Vice President, Eva Martinez, delivered an overview of the organization, explaining how WIA-Canada has grown over the years and provided examples of the various types of events and programs organized to highlight the benefits that WIA-Canada brings to the aerospace community. As WIA-Canada gains traction in the Atlantic provinces, events will be organized quarterly. Stay tuned for upcoming event details or contact [email protected] to join the mailing list.

Techsploration Comes to IMPSubmitted By Séverine Guitton After 18 months of planning, schedule coordination and meetings, IMP welcomed six young women in grade nine from Hants North Rural High School to visit our facility for Techsploration’s “Career’s Research Model”. Techsploration introduces young women to careers in science, trades, technical and technology-related occupations to help empower their choices in non-traditional careers. The students arrived with safety boots and glasses on, ready for their day of discovery. The group was taken on a tour where they got a chance to meet Cheryl Meehan, who is featured in a “Women in Action” video on the Techsploration website, followed by an afternoonof learning with Alicia Eisenor (IMP’s Techsploration role model). The students were given a taste of riveting and “we even had a natural in the group” noted Alicia. The students presented Alicia’s job to their school on April 12 and presented in Truro on May 20th as they began showcasing IMP to schools throughout the province.

The Equity Committee would like to thank Management for enabling the event, the Sea King production team and all employees at IMP Aerospace who have helped and contributed to encourage these students to explore a wider range of career options.

eWO takes off Submitted By Séverine Guitton This is it! After months of programming, a year of trials in #8 Building, hours of training and lots of suggestions from production users, the final phase in launching electronic work orders (eWO) is here. The eWO program was launched last February on Sea King 124414. With the induction of CP140116, the program is being put through its final test with a fixed wing aircraft. How are we doing? After a few tweaks in the first few days of launch on the Sea King, we achieved a successful transition to the eWO. The rate of error is less than 2.5% with a 100% audit. This is better than our paper error rate of 3% based on random samples. Way to goSea King Teams!

The next challenge is the CP140 Aurora Combined Program, and the teams are ready with support nearby to help improve, troubleshoot and evolve. “In late May, a Directorate of Technical Airworthiness and Engineering Support (DTAES) audit team carried out an airworthiness surveillance audit of IMP Aerospace’s Aircraft Maintenance Organization (AMO). This audit included a thorough review of the eWO process and implementation. The audit team commented on the number of notable improvements within the AMO with a specific comment that the eWO system is ready for full use at IMP Aerospace. Congratulations to the team on successfully passing this rigorous audit.”

The Cascade Comets were at it again this year supporting the Heart & Stroke Foundation in Abbotsford, BC. This heart-pumping 15 minute ride aboard a bicycle built for 30 is always a fantastic way to unite Cascade peers and supports a great cause. Cascade had 21 participants come out, once again building a memorable and meaningful team building experience. Everyone felt the joy and exhilaration of riding the Big Bike, shaking their maracas as onlookers honked and showed their support. This is Cascade’s 12th year in a row of participation in the Heart &

On April 22nd, Cascade employees raised over $800 for Matthew’s House, a respite care facility located in Abbotsford. The money was raised through a very well supplied Bake Sale and a Starbucks-donated coffee station. Matthew’s House provides respite care for children who live with complex care issues. The facility allows the family a chance to rest and regroup for a short

time in order to continue the on-going care of their children. A special thanks goes out to Alyssa Weilenga who organized this successful event!

Stroke Foundation event. We raised a total of $2,600 this year, bringing the total funds raised over 12 years to almost $40,000. The Cascade Comets finished with a tear jerking testimonial from a young boy’s grandmother who spoke about his miraculous recovery from open heart surgery just last week. The Cascade Comets walked away with tears of gratitude and an affirmed feeling of why we participate in such an amazing charity event. A big thank you to those who participated, donated and supported the Cascade Comets for the Heart & Stroke Foundation!

Girls Fly Too EventSubmitted By Lorna Hart More than 50 enthusiastic Cascade employees volunteered to help host Cascade’s presence in “The Sky’s No Limit - Girls Fly Too” 2016 event. The volunteers hosted attendee-engaging activities at our 20’ x 20’ booth and at our C130K that was on static display. The event is an outreach initiative that aims to address gender and cultural diversity in the aerospace, aviation, marine and defence sectors. Cascade Aerospace was a gold sponsor and was the first aerospace company in Canada to sign up in 2016. “Since less than 3% of the aircraft mechanics in Canada are women, and a similarly low number are aeronautical engineers, we need to attract women to our industry and help our business by taking action to change these numbers”, says Cascade COO, Ben Boehm. Many thanks to our many volunteers. A special thanks to DND’s on-site Technical Authority, Captain Leonie Farrell, who helped look after the Canadian and American aircrews that were with the aircraft on static display.

NSCC Student Project on Hand Tool SearchesSubmitted By Keith Webb & Séverine Guitton IMP’s Continuous Improvement Team participated with the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) and its Industrial Engineering Technologist Project in Industry Course. The idea “to find a better way to locate hand tools” was brought forth to CI by production technicians. CI forwarded this project to the NSCC for students to come onsite once a week through their school year to investigate the issue and propose a recommendation. Two students, Cole Ralston and Keith Webb, completed a five week work placement and spent time investigating and familiarizing themselves with the process of searching or requesting hand tools from the stores. They found that 1/3 of the requested hand tools were unavailable and the stores clerks in the tool cribs had difficulties finding alternates. Through interviews and discussions with stores and production, the students identified tool groupings (fields) that would help standardize the searches. Using unique categories for the tools in a standardized grid, a category can be selected and the search will return all tools in that category (regardless of the spelling). We are currently piloting the project with hopes of implementing mid-summer.

The annual Atlantic Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AME) Association Conference was held in Moncton New Brunswick on April 6th to 8th. Tracey Matheson, Neil Harding, Tatyana Munn and Gary Jensen attended the conference on behalf of IMP Aerospace to interact and promote IMP Aerospace & Defence with other companies and personnel working within the aircraft maintenance industry. The conference also offered technical information sessions. These sessions highlight trends and showcased products and procedures within the aircraft maintenance industry. This year’s sessions included a five minute Promo of the companies attending the conference as well as features on some of the newer products and offerings available. IMP Aerospace & Defence had a display booth which gave the

attending team a chance to answer questions and handout information about the company. Many people within the industry were unaware of the scope of work performed within IMP Aerospace & Defence. The team took great pleasure in providing information, promoting the company and building relationships within our region. The Atlantic AME Association is one of five associations across Canada. These associations represent regional interests and work together with The Canadian Federation of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Associations at the national level. The purpose of the association is to maintain and enhance the standards of professionalism of the aircraft maintenance industry as a whole. The association works with Transport Canada to formulate new rules and regulations, and to promote the viewpoint of the aircraft maintenance industry.

CH124 Sea King Avionics Maintenance Contract – ShearwaterSubmitted By Gaetan Blais On February 11th, the IMP Electronic Systems Shearwater “Detachment” celebrated two recent successes. The first occurred in October 2015 when Electronic Systems was re-awarded the contract to provide 2nd Line Sea King Avionics Maintenance Support on-site within 12 Air Maintenance Squadron (12 AMS). While IMP has been providing its support to 12 AMS for nearly 10 years, this latest contract award also led to the second success through the increase in responsibilities. Through this contract, additional avionic systems

maintenance activities were transferred to IMP, effective February 1st. Until now, IMP had been responsible for approximately half of the avionics support work done at Shearwater by 12 AMS Avionics Support Organization (AvSO). With the recent expansion of IMP’s workload into both the Automatic Stabilization Equipment and Sonar Labs, the majority of the AvSO’s output now falls under IMP’s mandate. This increase clearly demonstrated the relationship of trust established with our Customer, the Department of National Defence.

Charity of ChoiceSubmitted By Jennie Brewer IMP Aerospace employees have been very generous in supporting numerous charities throughout the years. IMP Aerospace frequently participates in these initiatives to supplement the generosity of our employees to their communities through company focused charitable efforts. In order to help direct IMP Aerospace charitable efforts a survey was sent out to all employees, and the majority of employees who responded chose Feed Nova Scotia, making it the employees charity of choice. This year the 20th Annual IMP Aerospace Golf Tournament, held on July 9th, will be supporting Feed NS, and all participants will be making either a monetary donation to Feed Nova Scotia or donating a non-perishable food item.

If you are interested in making donations outside of the company efforts, Feed NS has options on their website to make one time monetary donations and to set up monthly donations. They also always welcome perishable and non-perishable food donations at their facility in Bedford. Currently they are in need of cereal, pasta, canned vegetables, soups and stews. In an effort to make donating easier for you, Feed NS has drop-off bins for non-perishable items in Sobeys, Superstore and Wal-marts.

For other ways to get involved in your community please visit their website at:http://www.feednovascotia.ca/waystohelp_landing.html

IMP Electronic Systems R&OSubmitted By Rory Filgate IMP Electronic Systems provides wire harness design, manufacturing and avionics repair and overall services for a number of aerospace, naval, land vehicle and space/satellite Industries. As part of these services, Hammonds Plains houses three avionics shops that provide critical services to our customers. They are known as Automatic Stabilization Equipment (ASE), Radar, and Communications (COMMS). They support a wide variety of items which are either repaired or overhauled under the guidance of R&O Supervisor Dave Craft. Mixed in with this work is a very successful manufacturing contract for which our skilled technicians have a 100% on-time delivery rate. The avionics industry is constantly changing, aircraft retire, contracts expire, and equipment is upgraded, making the activity in these shops a constant challenge to evolve and adapt to meet customer needs. The COMM shop is the largest of the three and has the widest variety of work performed. This shop is under the watchful eye of Lead Hand Corey Langille. This is where the manufacture of Recovery Assist, Secure Traverse (RAST) and Bladefold Panel Assemblies is performed for customers such as Sikorsky. Our technicians and cable assemblers manufacture all subassemblies for these units, which consist of circuit cards and wire harnesses. Our team has been doing so well on this contract that we have recently received extra orders, and we have had to double the personnel from three to six. As part of the COMM shop the SONAR program is another success story. Originally thought to be un-repairable, with excellent engineering support our technicians have been able to overhaul these items and keep our customers supplied. The COMM shop is also expanding into valves and indicators for the CP140 program and indicators for

Honeywell, while we continue to support long-time customers like L-3 with UHF and VHF Radios, teletype, and various circuit cards. Located in the ASE Shop, the ASE program is one of our longest running lines of business. The work on the ASE was originally performed at the Halifax airport, and was then moved to the Hammonds Plains ASE shop in 1989. The Lead Hand of the ASE Shop, Mitch Oickle, is one of our most experienced technicians. In this shop our technicians completely overhaul ASE Amplifiers and their subassemblies, returning them to a like new condition. It is truly amazing to see the transformation from start to finish. The ASE shop is also where our technicians perform repairs on Sea King items such as slip rings, brush blocks, armament distribution boxes, and intercom controls. The last shop physically located at Hammonds Plains is the RADAR shop which also falls under Lead Hand, Mitch Oickle. Here our technicians maintain the Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems, Transponder Test Sets, the APN 59E Radar, Height Indicators and the APS 503 Radar. Two Inspectors are responsible for quality in all three shops. We have a number of customers, and some require that the inspectors receive their specialized training. The main reason these shops continue to thrive is the team attitude. Even with three shops at Hammonds Plains, they operate as a single unit, with satisfying the customer as the primary goal. Dave eagerly listens to all techs from the most senior to the newest members of the group, and when a decision is made the entire group supports it. Our job is also made easier by the continued support from Engineering, Stores, Purchasing and the Library, and we thank you all.

Flight Safety AwardsSubmitted By Barry Wadman

Mike Gates receiving his For Pro award from Col. Charpentier and CWO Labrie

Terry White receiving his DFS coin from Col. Charpentier

The RCAF Directorate of Flight Safety (DFS) team visited CH149 Cormorant Main Operating Base (MOB) Gander in April for the annual flight safety brief. During their visit, two IMP employees were presented with flight safety awards. Mike Gates received a For Professionalism (For Pro) award for the discovery of a migrating bearing on the Main Rotor Servos of a CH149 Cormorant aircraft. The For Pro award shows what a good pick up it was by Mike. The discovery of the migrating bearing prevented a potentially catastrophic failure of the servo actuator which could have caused a frozen flight control with potentially catastrophic consequences. His find ultimately led to a fleet wide inspection and prevented a potentially deadly situation occurring. He received the award for his professionalism, knowledge and attention to detail.

Terry White received a DFS Coin for his continued support to the FS Program. His citation read as follows:

“Mr. Terry White has been the IMP Flight Safety rep since 13 February 2012 and has been an important member of the Flight Safety Team at 103 Squadron ever since. Mr. White proactively follows up on all maintenance related Flight Safety incidents by ensuring that Crew Chief Reports are completed timely and thoroughly. His knowledge of the CH149 Cormorant and the maintenance administration associated with it is formidable and is displayed in his contribution to all associated Flight Safety Investigations. Mr. White has become a valuable asset and contributor of the successful Flight Safety program and Flight Safety culture at 103 Squadron, and for that is highly recommended to be recognized for his contributions to the Flight Safety program at 103 Squadron and 9 Wing Gander”.

Congratulations to both Mike and Terry for receiving these prestigious awards.

Remembering Sheri HoolwerfSubmitted By Jennie Brewer

Remembering Yvonne KnockwoodSubmitted By Jennie Brewer

Remembering Diana BennettSubmitted By Jennie Brewer

It is with great sadness that one of our colleagues, Sheri Hoolwerf passed away peacefully on March 20th after a courageous battle with cancer. Sheri began her career with IMP Aerospace as a Personnel Administrator in June 2002, before moving into her role of Benefits Coordinator in May 2009. Sheri took on this role with great enthusiasm and quickly became invested in the well-being of IMP employees, earning respect from both the employees and management teams. Sheri’s joyful and outgoing nature made her a pleasure to work with, and earned her many friends at IMP. Throughout her illness, Sheri continued to maintain a positive outlook and showed incredible strength. Sheri found comfort in staying positive and would often share quotes with her HR Team to encourage positive thoughts. Recently she said, “Every day may not be good, but there’s something good in every day!” Her co-workers will never forget the bravery that Sheri has shown over the past six months or the support she was providing to others in her own time of need. She will be dearly missed by all.

It is with great sadness that Mary Yvonne Knockwood passed away in the early hours of April 4, after a courageous battle with cancer. Employed as a cable assembler for over 32 years, Yvonne was a model employee: hard working, professional, wholehearted, and thoughtful. Friends and co-workers will remember Yvonne for her positive attitude, her love of animals and her ability to always put others first. Yvonne was passionate about raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and would annually participate in the Walk to Cure Diabetes. A positive employee, caring friend and proud mother, she will be greatly missed by all her friends at IMP Aerospace, in particular in Hammonds Plains.

It is with great sadness that one of our colleagues, Diana Bennett passed away peacefully on March 13, after a courageous battle with cancer. Diana began her IMP career in May of 1986, working as a Cable Assembler at our Hammonds Plains location. She then moved to our HIA location as a Labourer/Sweeper and often helped out in the Fabric shop when needed. Diana had a great work ethic and was a true team player. She was a very special person who truly went out of her way to let others know they were important. She was a strong yet compassionate and caring person, always willing to help others and routinely reaching out to others with kind and encouraging words. Diana loved her family very much and enjoyed her grandchildren, whom she often talked about, telling of their adventures together. She was a spiritual person who truly believed in the power of positive thinking and kindness towards others. Diana has been, and will continue to be, greatly missed by all who knew her.

Ora then called Bruce Sutherland to see if he could take a look out his window but his line was busy. She then called Sylvie Doucet, who came out to Reception and watched him while Ora called the Security gate and reported it to them. Rob Malloy, who was coming in the front door, also noticed the stranger and gave Ora the make and license of the individual’s vehicle. Ora then called Bryan Campbell in Security to inform him of what was going on. As she was talking to Bryan, the individual got into his car and left the property. Bryan asked Ora to write the events up in an email that he forwarded to Airport Security. Great job Ora.
